NEXT WEEK: West Seattle gathering for LGBTQ teens

LGBTQ youth 14-18 are invited to the first West Seattle teen meetup organized by the locally founded/based Gender Family Alliance. It’s planned for 7 pm October 9th at a residence in south West Seattle. You can contact the organizer to RSVP and get location information – our calendar listing has that info, as does the event flyer.

Very cool this exists. Times seem so opposite from 25 years ago. I was a terrified closeted youth in high school.

I agree West Seattle Guy! I was just reading yesterday about the recent LGBTQ teen suicide in Coffee County, Tennessee. I am unsure if I am allowed to link to the story, but for those interested, it’s a mere google away. I grew up in a time and place where a family member could have you committed to an asylum for showing same sex love; an institutional commitment that could lead to many types of quack ‘cures’, or electro shock, and I’m guessing, more than a few ultimate ‘cures’ of frontal lobotomy.Never again. For me, the gay rights movement has always been about young men and women never again having to feel the fear, shame, and vulnerability that I felt while merely growing into my sexuality. It leaves a mark, like some psychological scarlet letter, which is the most sinister aspect of this particular variety of barbarism. Groups like this help immeasurably, as does PFLAG. If you are reading this, and are feeling vulnerable, please reach out to one of these organizations, or to someone whom you trust. You are not alone.

I don’t know if it’s okay, but I was hoping to bump this topic just a bit. It’s so vital that young folks know that there are opportunities to socialize in safe, welcoming environments right here in their own neighborhood. Peace & Love to all.

Sorry, comment time is over.
