QUESTIONS FOR YOU: What would you like to see in Seattle Parks’ future?

(Lincoln Park aerial photo from 2012, by Long Bach Nguyen

Seattle Parks is looking to the future and asking you what you think that future should hold. More nature? More amenities? Those and 30+ other questions are in this new survey. If you don’t spend much time in Parks facilities (which also include community centers and pools), they want to ask you about that too. It’s part of this process.

NO SMOKING!!! at Lincoln Park esp on the beach.Stinks!!

I would like to see those so called entitled dog owners follow the law.  Dogs on leach’s,  clean up the poop. When it says no dogs on beach or in the water keep them where they belong.  Better yet no dogs allowed in parks at all.

Bathroom or outhouse (🤢) at Lowman Beach!!  Why isn’t there one?!??!

Thoughtful preservation of wild spaces, passive-use trails, respect for nature.   Natural  places preserve habitat for wildlife, and restore the human body and spirit.

      J. Houston, I am so with you on this.  Took the survey and hope you will too.

If they can plan improvements why are they asking for more park levy funds?

    • KM August 15, 2019 (10:39 am)

Are you thinking of the King County parks levy that just passed? This survey is for Seattle parks, not King County Parks.

      Improvements usually cost something.

Clean bathrooms in all major parks; more bathrooms in some of the smaller parks. More benches. More garbage cans (and empty them regularly). A clear policy (enforced) about camping. Protection of trees.  Bat (the flying kind) boxes. Park “rangers” in the larger parks (especially Discovery & Lincoln) for walking tours and security. An outdoor pool on Capitol Hill!

Because more money from taxpayers is their bottomless piggy bank. It’s so much fun to spend others money!

Good ideas, Mary K.  I agree wholeheartedly!  I hope you will take the survey to have your ideas more likely to reach Seattle Parks Dept.

More comfort stations, focus on adding new ones versus replacing functional old ones.

I’m all for things that benefit all people. Park’s should be one of those things. I have concerns about park’s like gasworks, Jack block, or the new one in Tacoma that are waste sites covered over. It’s all taxpayer  funds. I’m looking for one of those old timer sayings now you can put lipstick on a elephant or a donkey but the groom is not going to mistake them for his bride.

    No camping.

    What J. Houston said.

This was not a reference to women representatives or others running for office. What I wanted to say and I still will not get it correct . I don’t want someone saying hey look at these great park’s I helped make. Look we have taken care of our super fund sites.  When to put in household terms its moving the draino bottle from one cupboard to another out of reach for my children but still there if they decide to dig around. I do not know what should be on this land in the end. I dont know if anyone except the person who made these chemicals is alive and willing to work with them to clean them up a lot of us use them.

    MORE PARKING

Dog park in the northern part of West Seattle.

Maintenance of the sports fields and parks. The grass fields in Seattle are best described as a goat track. Go to one of the suburban cities around us and see how much better their grass sports fields are maintained. I feel like I need to bring my own mower out to the fields so my teams can play soccer on them, Maintenance of the bathrooms would also be a big improvement. They’re not as bad here in West Seattle as they are in other parts of the city, but they’re unusable at times.

Just took the survey.  Thank you for providing link. Was shocked that it included a suggestion for zip lines in our parks. We’ve  already been through that when Seattle Park’s tried to push through a planned zip line in  Lincoln Park, and the WS community rose up en masse to block it. –Successfully, thank goodness. But it took a MASSIVE effort to stop Parks from moving forward. As I remember, the city was just about ready to sign the contract with the zip line company when the plan was leaked to the public.  Very alarming that it’s still on Park’s radar.  We need to preserve and enhance the remaining natural areas for the sake of our own well being and to support what remains of our urban wildlife.  As this area becomes increasingly densely developed, true natural areas will be some of the only remaining places of solace and peace. This place and the natural beauty that still remains here is sacred.

WSSZ,  the zipline suggestion surprised me as well. —Mike

Completely agree with J. Houston and WSSZ.  Areas of natural quiet and beauty are becoming more scarce and more precious.  Areas of relatively undisturbed forest and native growth are essential to preserving habitat for birds and other species as development continues to gobble up land.   There are plenty of opportunities for sports and entertainment; the parks should not be diminished or compromised for those purposes.

Sorry, comment time is over.
