BIZNOTE: Tech entrepreneur’s plan for a South Admiral bar

A nonprofit bar is the plan for Jaimatadi, on the way to 3278-B California SW. We just spoke with Deep Katyal, a tech entrepreneur who’s planning the foray into nightlife. He says that after buying the newly built space he had to figure out what to do with the commercial space. The plan is for a small venue serving beer and wine, with entertainment, and karaoke – in multiple languages. The twist: Proceeds will all go to nonprofits; patrons will have a choice of three charities their tab can go toward. He’s chosen one, CRY, but hasn’t decided on the other two yet – maybe one involving pets, he says, since his wife “loves dogs.” He’s hoping to open within two months, depending on how much longer the liquor license takes.

My unsolicited advice is local art projects. Look at how much awesome Desmond Hansen is doing around here for example.

I think supporting youth in our area through art is a great idea, maybe something like https://urbanartworks.org/ which is who a lot of the murals you see in Seattle are associated with.

As the proud adopted dad of two PAWS pups, I hope Mr. Katyal will consider that wonderful organization. Not only are they finding NW homes for companion animals from other parts of the US, they’re also caring for the Harbor seals abandoned on our shores.

Yes! PAWS would be a great choice. They are doing amazing work right here in west seattle.

CRY seems like a really worthy charity.  Will be happy to drink a beer in support! ;)

Sweet! Between that and Larry’s Tavern, this whole block is going to have all kinds of fun stuff to do. And, not to mention Prost, which is a great place for a beer and pretzel.

    Homeless perhaps?

What an inspiring idea! There is endless need in the world, whatever charities he chooses will certainly be worthy.

Mary’s place. Helps homeless wines. Families. And allows pets with them.

What a wonderful and generous concept. Perhaps rather than 3 fixed selections, three categories (animals, human services, education, for example) allowing funds to benefit more organizations, rather than being “sugar daddy” to a few. I’d certainly frequent such an establishment, as I have supported several WS businesses that have engaged in community service acts. And I’ll put in a plug for supporting art/athletics/music and such extracurricular activities at local schools. good luck!

I can help homeless wines, just send them my way.  All joking aside, what a wonderful concept Mr. Katyal has come up with.

This is a refreshing, wonderful idea.  I wonder if Mr. Katyal would consider rotating charities?  A different set of charities each month or bimonthly?

I hope everyone that supports his charitable ideas, supports his business when it opens, and other Mom and Pop type business in the neighborhood, to keep it up and running.

Why wait for a liquor license when he actually won’t sell alchohol? It’s non-profit and hence he’s not technically selling it. Peoe can donate money for a glass to drink the free alchohol…

How about the West Seattle Food Bank.  It provides basic food for several thousand people and families per year and can use all the help it can get.

Lagunitad Brewery in Ballard has two benefit nights a week, where the revenue from the bar for a couple of hours goes to a local arts group. The one I went to was for Live Music Project” (they have a proper stage.

Sorry, comment time is over.
