DEVELOPMENT: Demolition day for Gatewood commercial buildings

12:12 PM: Just east of Gatewood Elementary, the commercial buildings set for residential replacement at California/Frontenac are being torn down today. The building housing Caffe Ladro is staying, Ladro’s owner has told WSB, but everything north of it, to Frontenac, is planned for replacement with rowhouse units. The businesses that were housed in those buildings started moving out last fall.

3:29 PM: The site is in files as three separate projects totaling, as best we can crunch, 15 units, nine rowhouses and six townhouses.

Any word on the type of housing that will be going in?

Mentioned in the story. Rowhouses. Only thing I’m still trying to figure out because of the way the plans were filed (not all as one development) is, how many units.

(Added 3:27 pm) 15 units including three 2-unit townhouse buildings along the alley.

Somehow I just totally missed that, sorry and thanks!

Site had several proposals over the years. Long pre-WSB, when I was a regular client of a business that has long since moved, there was talk the block might become the WS Trader Joe’s site. Of course, way back in the day, that was the most active rumor for many sites…

    Still sucks.

Will theses units be commercial as well as residential like the ones more towards admiral?

The permits all indicate rowhouse/townhouse, no mention of live-work, which is the classification for what you’re referring to.

I hope they put in live / work units with adequate parking.

    • WSB June 10, 2019 (11:36 pm)

      According to the site plans:
-Townhouses and rowhouses, none ID’d as live-works.
      -No parking.

No parking?  Because no one has cars?

    • WSB June 11, 2019 (10:56 am)

No parking because it’s not required. These will be for-sale units so it’s whatever the market will bear.

Uh, oh. No parking. That will make school event parking even tighter. And no businesses. It would have been cool to have a restaurant or other business there.

So sad that businesses keep getting torn down to create housing. Soon there will be no where to shop local.

Sorry, comment time is over.
