WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Avalon assault

We’ve learned more about a police and fire response that drew some attention along Avalon Way east of 35th early Monday morning. A 23-year-old woman is recovering from injuries and a 42-year-old man is in jail after what’s under investigation as a case of assault. The police-report narrative says multiple 911 callers reported a woman screaming and two other voices. The victim said she was sitting outside her apartment building when she saw the man and his girlfriend, who, she told officers, she often sees, as they live nearby. She asked him to return a lighter she had loaned him a year or so earlier; an argument ensued, and, she said, he punched her in the face five times, knocking her down. The man’s girlfriend tried to stop him, the victim said; finally they went back into their building. The report says police found the suspect’s apartment by following a trail of blood. He claimed what he did was in self-defense, saying he had been hit, but police found no injuries to confirm that. He is in jail, held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

$5,000 bail for an assault on a female seems a bit low…..

You feel that the gender of the alleged victim is relevant to the crime? I guess we are thankful you’re not a judge. Or a lawyer, for that matter.

      assault on a person….

Anybody who assaults a woman should be considered a greater threat to society as a whole.

Being a woman makes it special?    Yeah, that’s a useful stereotype.   Condemn the assault.

Female humans average 37% to 68% the muscle strength of male humans. I don’t apologize if scientific facts don’t align with your preferred gender narrative.

        • objective April 9, 2019 (10:30 pm)

37-57% is absolute nonsense,   Which is it?i know men who are quite frail, and also women who are large and strong. The overall statistic of ‘average’ men vs ‘average’ women is irrelevant ; what matters here are the individuals involved.  And really, who the hell are you to lecture, either about scientific facts or about ‘preferred gender narratives’ ?

Not the place for this conversation. Some one got hurt (a young lady, that’s just a fact). The least you could do is not distract from the true focus of this story.

Exactly right, Yikes.    I’m standing by my ‘condemn the assault’.   No ‘gender narrative’ involved.

Actually, it is important to highlight the facts–a man violently assaulted a woman. Violence against women amd girls around the world is a critical issue and policing a comment because it draws attention to the gendered aspects of a crime is akin to sticking your head in the sand. Educate yourself please. https://interactive.unwomen.org/multimedia/infographic/violenceagainstwomen/en/index.html#sexual

Christina, you’re absolutely right.   I see now that denouncing assault was a mistake.   Just look at the hostile reaction it got me here.Instead, I read that fine article about how violence is commonly accepted worldwide.    I want to stick with established norms, sure!  Everyone’s doing it…..or, you could stop and think before presuming to instruct.

Such an angry response. As you said in previous comments, we should focus on the individuals involved, who in this case are a male aggressor and a female victim, a detail that makes a discussion about gender violence very relevant and very much a denunciation of this and all other types of violence.

I am with you Christina. Except trying to educate someone commenting in anonymity that is clearly looking to shock you with his comments. This is what violence against women is made of.I am a mother and my job is to guide my boys to be respectful of women. I am hoping for a better generation. It can be done.

Yup assaults are bad. Men are usually stronger than women. Men shouldn’t hit women. And I think that if this guy was mad at a man he wouldn’t have assaulted him. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn’t, but he knew he would win this fight against a woman 100%  and that’s why he attacked her.

With age comes wisdom… but not in this case.

  • mary April 9, 2019 (10:18 pm)

Oh dear, that’s awful!    Can he be prosecuted?

    • WSB April 9, 2019 (10:21 pm)

He was arrested and at last check was still in jail. The next question is whether charges will be filed.

  • ScubaFrog April 11, 2019 (7:55 am)

I’m glad he was still in jail per your last check.  I Really hope charges will be pressed, it sounds brutal.  Violent crimes especially should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law imo.  How awful.

Sorry, comment time is over.
