WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Bank robbery in The Junction

3:58 PM: If you’ve noticed the police response in The Junction – they’re investigating what was initially described in radio communication as a robbery or attempted robbery at HomeStreet Bank (4022 SW Alaska; WSB sponsor). They’re looking for a suspect described as having headed north up the alley north of the bank, a white man in his 30s, buzzcut hair, about 6’2″, thin build, gray hooded sweatshirt with green/white lettering or emblem, blue or black bandanna, jeans. A K9 is helping police search.

4:03 PM: Radio communication indicates money was taken, so this was a robbery. First bank robbery/attempted robbery in our area in almost two years, according to our archives.

Is that the same description of the guy car prowling in the same area the other day?

If memory serves, this bank was robbed 3-4 years ago?

It was robbed 3.5 years ago, before that is was the Money Tree and Viking Bank, which were bigger ordeals.

As Viking Bank, it was robbed in 2010 and 2011.

I remember the first major one at Viking, dye pack still has remnants on a parking strip where perps dropped the bag. The second Viking experience…cleaning service tripped the alarm and swat came out. Money Tree was another experience, before Viking.

Bank of America, directly across the street from Home Street Bank, has made drastic changes to their customer service layout.  They are down to 2 tellers – maybe. At times, causing long lines to form and people standing lengthy minutes waiting to be called up to an available window.Gone also is the guard that once stood at the entrance. When you have bank robbers lurking around the area, just waiting for a chance to pounce on a vulnerable scenario such as long lines of unsuspecting customers, tellers too busy to see what’s coming, desk personnel tucked away behind partitions – no one is watching the front door – you have a potentially dangerous situation. It was not two weeks ago, when I finally got called up to a window, I asked the teller to consider the scenario above and please relay my concern to management. Tonight, I read this story about Home Street.

Certainly you should voice your concerns to your bank. But, we don’t have “bank robbers lurking around the area” – we aren’t even averaging one bank robbery a year the past few years. While still not frequent, robberies are more common when people are simply walking down the street. – TR

Most robberies aren’t the type you see in movies (ie takeover robberies). The majority are just a guy quietly passing a note to the teller.  And these bank robbers aren’t too keen on standing around waiting in line for their turn to pass the note, anyway. They want to get in and out and quickly and inconspicuously as possible.

Sorry, comment time is over.
