FOLLOWUP: Open house set before Avalon/35th repaving/rechannelization begins

This hasn’t been circulated widely by SDOT yet, but a postcard has landed in some mailboxes with the date for the promised open house before work starts on the next big road project in West Seattle — repaving and rechannelization of SW Avalon Way, plus repaving of three blocks of 35th SW and one block of SW Alaska. The postcard reiterates what SDOT announced a little over a month ago, that construction might start as soon as April. The open house is scheduled for 5:30-7 pm Thursday, March 14th, at American Legion Post 160 in The Triangle (3618 SW Alaska). If you’ve missed previous updates, these maps show exactly how the project will change channelization and parking; these maps show what kind of repaving will be done and where; project toplines were also featured in our January 30th update.

Ugh. I didn’t realize this project was going to last at least a year with construction until 2020.

    Gonna be a hot mess.

How long after project finishes before builders punch a hole in the brand new street and put a crappy patch over it?I guess less than two weeks.

Given there are still somewhat-major projects in the pipeline for Avalon, that’s an interesting question I’ll add to the list.

Aren’t contractors legally required to put the street back  the way it was?? They never do-city seems blind(or bought off!)

Is there any plan in the near future to fix 35th between Alaska and Hudson… which feels like a war zone with potholes, bumps, and pieces of asphalt that routinely break loose in large pieces in front of the north-bound 21 bus stop? They frequently make temporary fixes, but they last a month or 2 and then fall apartl

Somewhat related but have there been any updates on when they will complete the work on the Avalon/Harbor/Spokane street pedestrian/bicycle crossing?Been almost a year, its still incomplete and still putting non-car traffic at risk. Does not inspire confidence in SDOT’s timelines for the Avalon rechannelization.

One month ago they said the “no right turn on red” illuminated sign was delayed- up to another 2 months (from that point) – and that’s why they couldn’t activate the bicycle signal. Since it’s been a month, I’m checking in again.

Wouldn’t this area be partially impacted with the future, undetermined light rail? Why not wait until that route is selected before making these changes?

Because THAT would make too much sense.

This very point is how I know with certainty that no one working at SDOT read feedback from surveys – and I have no doubt that ST doesn’t either. The WSB internet trolls can disagree all you like. But I have made this point repeatedly and it has never been considered and certainly not acknowledged.

Sorry, comment time is over.
