WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Sunday pm updates, plus Monday changes/closures

(MONDAY SCHOOL CHANGES: Update – see separate story)

(Added: 4:40 pm in Morgan Junction, photo from Tamsen Spengler)

FIRST REPORT, 3:10 PM: Thanks for all the reports! We’ve seen some of the first light snow ourselves, traveling on Roxbury after leaving a meeting. We’ve also seen evidence that SDOT has been out treating the roads. More coverage to come!

3:28 PM: We’re in The Junction and it’s a steady snow shower. Not yet sticking.

3:44 PM: In south Morgan Junction, it’s sticking on cars and planting strips/yards. Getting similar reports in comments and via Twitter from other areas.

4:32 PM: Continuing to snow lightly. The updated forecast projects about an inch tonight, maybe another inch tomorrow morning. We’ll be watching weather and traffic (roads are bare and wet now – see cameras here) throughout the night and into the morning – if you see something we should know about, our 24/7 hotline (text or voice) is 206-293-6302.

6:05 PM: While the roads were bare and wet just over an hour ago, when we took the picture above this line, that’s changed – at least on side streets:

7:31 PM: Driving home from a Super Bowl party? Be careful. Snow has stopped for now, and no major road problems are reported, but temps are close to freezing and we might see ice as they drop further. No official total yet but Kristina, near West Seattle Nursery, sends this measurement:

7:55 PM: Update from here in Upper Fauntleroy:

8:08 PM: New weather alert – Winter Weather Advisory saying at least another inch of snow is likely.

8:43 PM: Regarding buses – “Metro currently plans to pre-chain most of the bus fleet as a precaution prior to the AM commute. (But) We don’t yet know whether buses will shift to snow routes.”

9:16 PM: From the West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor):

WEST SEATTLE AND FAUNTLEROY DELAYED OPENING ON MONDAY: Due to the overnight weather advisory predicting 1-3” of snow, both our West Seattle and Fauntleroy locations will open at 9am on Monday. There will be no AM Kids Corner at Fauntleroy YMCA. All school based programs will follow the SPS weather schedule (no decision has been made by SPS yet).

9:23 PM: Now the school announcements are rolling in. We will start a separate story for these soon but first we’ll add them here:
Hope Lutheran School, closed, no preschool/extended care
Seattle Lutheran High School, 10:30 am start
Highline Public Schools, 2 hours late, morning/afternoon classes canceled for preschool and ECEAP.
Vashon Island School District, 2 1/2 hours late.
(NOTE: PLEASE SEE THIS NEW MONDAY MORNING LIST FOR SCHOOL INFO)

ADDED 10:06 PM: Seattle Public Schools, 2 hours late, buses on snow routes, other details here, including:

o door-to-door service. No preschool or Head Start. No out of district service. No taxi cab, therapy, partial day or shuttle transportation. No before school activities. Check with your school regarding athletic events. Check with your childcare provider about child care.

ADDED 10:21 PM: South Seattle College starts at 10 am. Classes scheduled to start earlier are canceled.

12:42 AM: No additions to the list yet.

5:04 AM: Changes are coming in, including SPS now CLOSED for today. We’re starting a list here. Call or text us at 206-293-6302 with school (and other) info.

i was up on whidbey this am and by noon it was snowing in full force and sticking in clinton near the ferry dock. as i drove south and home to ws, the falling snow became rain and then dry pavement.  it’s now clearly snowing but not yet sticking on pigeon point.

Really coming down in the junction- Hudson and 42nd

  • AMD February 3, 2019 (4:00 pm)

It seems like it’s getting lighter already (at least in WC).  A section of walkway where snow was firmly sticking 20 minutes ago is now starting to melt and less snow is falling.  It feels like a race against sunset, but this might not be so bad after all.

Getting nice coverage on my balcony at 35th and Morgan. Tried to let one of my cats go out on it, but got a big NOPE..lol

  • Kristina February 3, 2019 (4:06 pm)

    Sticking near WS Nursery!

  • West Seattle Hipster February 3, 2019 (4:08 pm)

Hopefully SDOT is on the ball and has the de-icing trucks out tonight.

  • anonyme February 3, 2019 (4:40 pm)

Hooray!!  Love this.  Thought we weren’t to be blessed with snow this winter, but here it is.  This former Michigander couldn’t be happier.

    • AHLIFER69 February 3, 2019 (11:28 pm)

Thank you..  I agree whole heartedly. Snow for a day or 2.

  • just wondering February 3, 2019 (4:40 pm)

What a way for the new tunnel to be inaugurated!

  • Trickycoolj February 3, 2019 (5:01 pm)

Now that I’m home from attempting to ski on blue ice at Snoqualmie I can positively say there is more fresh snow in my front yard in High Point than at the Summit at Snoqualmie.

  • AlkiBrian February 3, 2019 (5:09 pm)

Thinning out down here behind Cactus.  My reports from Admiral/California area?   I’m not a fan of snow, so as soon as it goes is fine with me.

    • WSB February 3, 2019 (5:26 pm)

      Admiral/California has a traffic cam:

Seattle is beautiful in the snow!! It happens maybe once a year for a couple days. True Seattleites enjoy this special occasion. Get over it !! We’re not in a polar vortex!!

      • AlkiBrian February 3, 2019 (6:04 pm)

Just expressing an opinion.  No need to jump all over me about it. I’ve been a resident for 29 years so consider myself to be a Seattleite.  I grew up in Salt Lake City and had my share of it for 25 years.  Left there for a reason and have never been back. Try though they might, Seattle doesn’t handle snow well, nor does the topography here.  That is just a fact of nature.

        • Stephen M February 3, 2019 (6:47 pm)

Right with you, AlkiBrian. I’m a NY native, spent 2 years in Buffalo. Seattle’s been my home since 1980.keep the snow in the mountains and in less hilly cities that are more prepared to handle it. It’s pretty tonight but it’s gonna get ugly come Connie time tomorrow morning. Everybody have fun. Enjoy and stay safe.

        • just wondering February 3, 2019 (6:51 pm)

I am a native so agree snow is not something Seattle does well.  In fairness though we are a city of hills, and our snow does not come down soft like powder but icy.

        • AHLIFER69 February 3, 2019 (7:41 pm)

SLC avg snowfall.. 62 inches, NYC avg snowfall 2-3 ft.. Buffalo 94 inches… Seattle 6.8 inches. Again, avg event is once year n lasts for a day or 2. I’m sure U’ll b fine. Enjoy it while we get it.

  • parent February 3, 2019 (5:16 pm)

Has public or private schools announce closures for tomorrow?

    • WSB February 3, 2019 (5:21 pm)

Nope. So far this doesn’t seem like closure-level snowfall… but of course for SPS, for example, it depends on how things are going in the rest of the city too.

  • Ruckus February 3, 2019 (5:38 pm)

Seems like conditions for the morning commute Monday are perfect for black ice, especially with onite temps in the low 20s.

  • parent February 3, 2019 (5:38 pm)

How much does it need to snow for us to get a day off of school?

    • HappyOnAlki February 3, 2019 (5:53 pm)

“Us”? Are you sure you’re the parent?

      • Kristina February 3, 2019 (6:19 pm)

I looove snow days, always have. They are magical! My teen and I both love them.

    • MercyMoi February 3, 2019 (6:19 pm)

If your student is in SPS, you’ll get a robocall, an email, and a text from the school district in the morning telling you one of four things.1 – Schools are running on regular schedule with buses running on snow routes2 – Schools are running a 2-hr delayed start with buses running on regular routes3- Schools are running a 2-hr delayed start with buses running on snow routes4 – Schools are closedNo news means regular schedule, regular routes. In my experience, SPS tends to make conservative calls, not much snow can still make for a delayed start or snow day. Consider how large the district is and the different levels of snow and ice impact on different school neighborhoods. If one neighborhood requires a shut down or delay, the whole district is shut down or delayed. WSB will post updates as SPS sends them out but you can check the SPS website as well.More on snow and winter conditions here: https://seattleschools.org/district/calendars/news/what_s_new/snow_and_winter_weather

      • WSB February 3, 2019 (6:24 pm)

We also generally hear from private schools and are keeping a proactive eye on schools’ online channels too. Definitely parents are supposed to be contacted directly but we are a failsafe/backup/etc. (and that also informs people who are interested but not parents or staff or otherwise directly connected to schools) … TR

        • HappyOnAlki February 3, 2019 (6:34 pm)

Thank you again for always being there for us, WSB — all of us!

        • Vashon Commuter February 3, 2019 (6:39 pm)

Vashon Schools are 2 ½ hours late arrival tomorrow, we were informed this morning. They will let us know by 6:00 am tomorrow if that changes.

          • WSB February 3, 2019 (6:46 pm)

Thank you. That alert is accessible via their homepage – either it opens a pop-up or you can click the red circle at lower right:

    • WS Dad February 3, 2019 (10:13 pm)

Just got the same text update.

      • WSB February 3, 2019 (10:31 pm)

SPS has made their decision (announced it on the superintendent’s Twitter feed 20 minutes before the main one but oh well, it’s out there now), and we’ve added above, along with everything else that is continuing to come in … TR

  • Kristina February 3, 2019 (9:01 pm)

Just received notice that Bellevue School District (where I work) is on a two hour delay (will cancel if weather demands and announce by 7am). Still haven’t heard from Seattle, but with below freezing temps, snow on the ground, and more snow to follow, how could they not???

  • Caitlin February 3, 2019 (10:25 pm)

South Seattle College — classes before 10AM cancelled.

    • WSB February 3, 2019 (10:30 pm)

      just added! thank you!

  • Yma February 3, 2019 (11:21 pm)

Hoping we’ll hear something from Westside School

    • WSB February 3, 2019 (11:54 pm)

Haven’t heard from any more of the private/parochial schools since that first rush, and not finding anything on their websites either. Maybe they’re waiting for early-early morning to make the call. We’ll be back on watch mega-early for updates.

  • BC February 4, 2019 (5:26 am)
