WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Sunday pm updates

FIRST REPORT, 3:23 PM: As predicted, the next wave of snow has begun:

(Lincoln Park photo by Kersti Muul)

Coverage resumes with our latest list of infolinks, including pages we’re continuing to update as info comes in:

NEWEST FORECAST/ALERTS: National Weather Service‘s Seattle site
SCHOOL CLOSURES: Monday announcements here
SDOT WINTER-RESPONSE MAP: See where SDOT has treated/plowed
TRAFFIC CAMS PAGE: Our compilation of local cameras
METRO ‘EMERGENCY SNOW NETWORK’: Here’s the bus plan for today and Monday
WEST SEATTLE WATER TAXI: Here’s the NEW plan for Monday
SOUND TRANSIT ALERTS: See left side of this page
SDOT CITYWIDE CAMS ETC. PAGE: Year-round “travelers” map with cams/more.
SEATTLE PARKS & RECREATION: Sunday updates here
SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARIES: See the updates atop this page.
SOLID WASTE COLLECTION: Updated – no Monday pickups
WS BUSINESS NOTES: Open, closed, changed – adding as received
WS CANCELLATIONS/POSTPONEMENTS/NON-BIZ CLOSURES: Includes Sun. and beyond, as received
EARLIER COVERAGE: Sat. #2 here, Sat. #1 here, Fri. #3 here; Fri. #2 here; bonus photos/video here

3:34 PM: Don’t everybody rush out. But Jason Grotelueschen sends the pic with a note that Junction True Value got a shipment of snow shovels and they’re going fast.

4:05 PM: As the snow continues falling fairly fast, almost every local school/district has already announced closures for tomorrow – we’re continuing to update our school-closures page (also linked above). … SPU has NOT yet called off trash/recycling/etc. pickups for tomorrow but says Monday customers (who were missed last week) will be prioritized whenever they do resume pickup.

(“Live” image from SDOT cam currently pointed east at high and low bridges)
4:31 PM: From the city’s latest mega-update:

Currently there are 34 snow vehicles out roving Seattle’s major arterials with plows, salt spreaders, and de-icer trucks servicing snow and ice routes. Fourteen hand crews are out responding to sidewalk issues in Downtown and Center City areas. The most high priority arterials are in fair to good condition with mostly slushy pavement conditions. Our goal is prevent ice buildup, with an ultimate goal of achieving “bare and wet” pavement conditions.

4:53 PM: Just added to our business-closures/changes page, Junction QFC is closing at 7 pm. The weather isn’t expected to get any better aside from what the NWS says will be a “brief break” very early Monday, so if you have to shop, sooner better than later.

6:21 PM: Important change for Water Taxi riders – since the announcement sent early this afternoon, they have CHANGED the plan and now WILL have 773/775 shuttle service, plus Pier 2 parking and that shuttle, on Monday. We have changed the link in the list above … For North Delridge, take note that our newest addition to the biz-info list is The Skylark (3803 Delridge Way SW), whose proprietor Matt reports they’re “open and will continue to be!” … And one more big addition to the school list: South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) just announced it’s closed Monday too.

7:18 PM: That C Line bus got stuck on the low bridge a short time ago (and is still blocking the westbound side); thanks to @D4RKARROW for tweeting the photo. We are at the point – as you can see on the cameras – that even the main routes are getting snowed over faster than the city can keep them cleared.

8 PM: Just in via text and tweet: More reports of roads to avoid, including Sylvan Way, and SW Oregon. Here’s why the roads have gotten so ugly – several inches of snow, as shown in this photo from Eddie V:

The NWS says snow should start to taper off shortly – at least, until tomorrow.

8:33 PM: Word of another stuck bus – this one’s on 35th SW south of Alaska:

Lots of reports of road trouble on the scanner.

8:45 PM: Thanks to MercyMoi for catching SPU’s recent update (at the same link in our list above) – NO Monday pickup; they’re hoping to catch up with Monday customers (who you’ll recall were skipped last week after the first snow) on Tuesday.

9:06 PM: Thanks to the texter who sent that photo of SDOT plowing Admiral tonight. Since by all accounts the heaviest snow has passed for now, they should be able to catch up – the map shows they have also hit 35th, Delridge, the bridge, and more this past hour.

10:13 PM: The bridge looks a lot better than it did a couple hours ago. Meantime, further proof the sky has at least partly cleared – we can see the moon through the trees to the west. And thanks for the fun pics too – we have added (and are still adding) today’s photos atop the gallery here.

11:15 PM: The NWS’s late-night “forecast discussion” (a deeper analysis they usually publish four times daily) says the air may be warming more than expected and that might mean more rain ahead than snow. MIGHT.

11:36 PM: The West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) plan for Monday, just announced: “Our West Seattle and Fauntleroy locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.” More specifics here.

Just a caution to folks walking on Alaska Street by Jefferson Square and Bank of America:  These two blocks are extremely icy. My daughter slipped and fell right by the bus stop. She’ll be okay—probably just a bruised tailbone—but thinking about the high volume of pedestrians who travel this way, and especially about folks with mobility issues. Seems Jefferson Square and BofA management need to get a crew out there to shovel and salt the sidewalks.

    • Sue H February 10, 2019 (6:38 pm)

Thanks, Katy. I have to walk the Jefferson Square block to get to my bus from 41st, and that is very typical of that area. It’s why I didn’t go to work last Monday and Tuesday because I knew it wouldn’t be clear.

    • Pdxmark February 10, 2019 (8:24 pm)

They should of been out there putting ice melt down on the sidewalks.  That is just too dangerous and outs them at a libaliity if someone falls.Sounds like the property management just doesn’t care about safety

      • Katy Felix February 11, 2019 (10:08 am)

People who have lived in weather before know that using your head is the best way to avoid injury on snow and ice. They, whoever they are,  can’t do that for you.  Stay off the ice and snow or wear good boots.    Seattle is not equipped to make every surface safe for you.

  • InTheHeights February 10, 2019 (5:04 pm)

Would love to remind everyone that if they do have to drive somewhere during the next few days, the snow on the roof of your car should always be cleared off in addition to your windows and mirrors. We just made a quick milk run to QFC before the current round of snow. On our short drive home down 35th to Arbor Heights, the vehicle in front of us came to a sudden stop in the middle of the road and got out of his vehicle. Snow from his roof had slid down and obstructed his windshield while he was driving and he had to clear it off so he could see. He did not turn on his hazards, but thankfully we were going slow enough that we were able to stop and wait for him to continue driving without incident.Leaving snow or ice on the roof of your vehicle is illegal in several states and can be very dangerous (even fatal) for the drivers behind you when it blows off and also for yourself and your passengers when it slides forward to cover your windshield. If you have snow/ice on your car roof (or in the bed of your truck), please take the time to clear it off before driving! It will make the roads safer for all of us.

Does anybody know if the Garbage Man is picking up Monday?

SPU has an update (reflected now in the WSB story above): maybe.  “We’re assessing pickup for Monday customersSPU and our contractors are closely watching the forecast and assessing pickup for our Monday customers—our customers who were first impacted last week, when pickup was cancelled on Monday, Feb. 4.If we can not pick up Monday customers’ garbage, recycling and yard waste tomorrow, Feb. 11, we will attempt to operate on a one-day delay and pick up on Tuesday. Customers can set out additional bags at no additional charge. If snowy, icy conditions prevent crews from being able to safely pickup Monday customers on Tuesday, we will prioritize Monday customers and get to them just as soon as the weather cooperates.

  • Miles February 10, 2019 (5:17 pm)

    I do not like this.
    Not one bit.
    This weather, I tell ‘ya,
    has got to quit.
    From the grocery store lines,
    to the empty shelves,
    to the slippery pavement,
    where I thrice fell.
    From the traffic,
    the cold feet,
    to the shoveling chores,
    Go away snow.
    Go away, for evermore.
Now, I’m an adult, I’m not having a fit,
But I do not like this.
    Not one bit.

  • mnw February 10, 2019 (5:35 pm)

The amount of sidewalks left un-shoveled by home and business owners really upsets me. They are hard, packed, slippery ice now. The city doesn’t want us on driving on the roads but the sidewalks make it almost more treacherous! Come on, everyone needs to do their part.

    • dnj February 10, 2019 (6:20 pm)

I get it, but not everyone has access to useable shovels! I am on 35th and try to keep my sidewalk clear, always, but my snow shovel broke before I was able to clear this snow. I hope people have a little patience and understanding. Most of us are making a good faith effort, even if not succeeding.

      • heartless February 10, 2019 (6:41 pm)

I agree with MNW, but with particular emphasis on businesses.  Walking down to the Farmers Market today there were some businesses who had cleared the sidewalks–and it was lovely–and others who hadn’t at all, and it was packed and icy and downright dangerous.  Specifically the west side of California north of the market– Pagliaccis and John Scott and the Fish Company had all cleared the walkway–Ma’ono hadn’t, at least as of 11am, nor had the consignment story a bit south.  end of rant/rave.  stay safe out there.

      • KM February 10, 2019 (8:55 pm)

Ours must have one on a walkabout, so I used a garden shovel and what a literal pain (in the back). My work from yesterday is all covered now anyhow!

    • Plf February 10, 2019 (6:34 pm)

Not everyone is physically able or have someone available to shovel our home sidewalk, getting tired of folks critizing those who don’t live up to their expectations.  If you would like to be a good neighbor I’ll give you my address and help, if not stop being judge mental and cross the street

      • CAM February 10, 2019 (6:51 pm)

There’s certain responsibilities you take on as a homeowner. While there are circumstances like dnj describes where you make efforts but can’t accomplish it, it’s entirely another thing to say you aren’t going to do it. If you aren’t able to shovel for some reason there are organizations and businesses out there that can help, as well as family, friends, and neighbors. I regularly drove to my grandparents house to shovel their sidewalks and stairs as a teenager. Sometimes when I got there their neighbors had already taken care of it for them. Telling people to cross the street to avoid unshoveled sidewalk is a bit much. Those streets are slick and the snow and slush is packed down even worse around the crosswalks from cars driving over it. Let’s instead urge each other to help out those we know can’t shovel their own walks.

        • Plf February 10, 2019 (7:02 pm)

So Cam can I expect to see you tomorrow? I will provide you with a cup of hot coffee, if I could I would, walk in my shoes before you even begin to judge and yes if the sidewalk across the street looks safer to you feel free to use

          • West Seattle Hipster February 10, 2019 (7:10 pm)

YES!  Thank you, I am tired of the judging and shaming that happens on this website by a few folks.

          • Canton February 10, 2019 (8:57 pm)

For sure, it’s getting a bit redundant. @ CAM, what if these are the sidewalks, of the vital people that show up for work, at some of the services WSH, mentions below. The people that show up, to get you fed. The people that show up, to transport you. All my neighbors, have been helping each other in whatever capacity. Just chill, it’s cold out there.

          • Eileen February 10, 2019 (7:47 pm)

I think CAM acknowledged their reminder didn’t apply to everyone – why be defensive? This is a community website and they were sharing a concern/observation and responded acknowledging your statements. How is that is judging and shaming?

          • Jon Wright February 10, 2019 (8:06 pm)

SMC 15.48.010 – Snow and ice removal. It is the responsibility of the owner or occupant of private property to remove snow and ice on the sidewalks abutting his or her property in a timely manner and, if practical, prevent its becoming or remaining in an icy, ridged, uneven or humped condition or in a condition which is potentially hazardous to users of the public sidewalks.

      • Yma February 10, 2019 (10:09 pm)

Hi @Plf if you can give me your cross streets, I can try & see if I can get there. (Would have to walk)  I urge you to reach out to your neighbors.

    • KM February 10, 2019 (8:45 pm)

SDOT blows my mind on this. They don’t want people to drive, yet do next to nothing to clear bus stops or bike lanes and put sidewalk clearance on homeowners, though it is technically not the property of the homeowners. SDOT needs to rethink their messaging or maintenance, or both.I hope everyone can be patient with each other during this weather, that’s the only way any of us will enjoy it—and I’m loving it.

      • Yma February 10, 2019 (9:51 pm)

SDOT  is doing a great job clearing the major & arterial streets. Home owners, renters are responsible for clearing the sidewalks in front of the property. That has nothing to do with SDOT.yes, please ask you neighbors for help.

        • heartless February 10, 2019 (10:26 pm)

YMA, minor point: it’s the responsibility of the property owners/landlords, NOT the tenants.  But yes, get out there and help people not slip/get wet feet.

    • Bradley February 10, 2019 (10:42 pm)

I actually find bare concrete with an invisible micro-layer of ice to be far more dangerous than walking on hard-packed snow. I avoid walking on shoveled sidewalks if the air temp is below 32 degrees.

    • WS living February 10, 2019 (10:51 pm)

I understand the frustration however even with sidewalks shoveled it doesn’t help, I slipped and fell on a shoveled sidewalk. also you can’t demand someone to go out and shovel their sidewalks just bc you say so. What about the elderly, disabled, parents whom are single with newborns? You expect them to “to do their part”?

  • Deftones February 10, 2019 (5:36 pm)

I want to thank the good people of cupcake royale being open so I can charge my phone. It’s also a good viewing point of California avenue cause I gotta wait for that c line shuttle that takes forever and beats waiting out in the cold.

  • EH February 10, 2019 (5:53 pm)

We’ve watched 4 cars slide down our street in the last 30 minutes. It’s not even a steep street, but the wheels lock up halfway down and you slide into the intersection! Please stay off the side roads if you can! No need to put yourself or your neighbors in jeopardy!

  • Gina February 10, 2019 (6:01 pm)

Met Market had sign up that they were closing at 8.

    • WSB February 10, 2019 (6:14 pm)

      Thank you!

  • Onion February 10, 2019 (6:03 pm)

Thank you, Miles. I’m enjoying the fellowship of walkers out braving the ice and cold, and the kids seeking sled thrills, but the novelty is wearing off ….. rapidly.

  • West Seattle Hipster February 10, 2019 (6:05 pm)

Not enough THANK YOU’S can be communicated the plow drivers, the bus drivers, the restaurant workers, grocery store workers, mail delivery drivers, etc. who continued to due their jobs in this snowstorm.  You people truly do rock, THANK YOU!

    • Kim February 10, 2019 (6:17 pm)

Yes, yes, yes!and to the WSB—thank you for being there and so informative for all of us.

    • Paula February 10, 2019 (7:08 pm)

Yes! And health care workers. I have a medically sensitive child and knowing that Children’s et al are still running (along with ambulances, fire trucks) if we have a problem is very reassuring.

  • quinkygirl February 10, 2019 (6:48 pm)

509 from Burien was great. Cloverdale/Roxbury/Delridge/35th are quite dicey in spots. Very grateful to have made it down Morgan. And if anyone has a better commute suggestion for tomorrow early AM back to Burien, please feel free to share!

  • Dawson February 10, 2019 (6:54 pm)

Can anyone tell me if I will get better at Fortnite during this snow event?

  • Kate February 10, 2019 (7:19 pm)

Vehicles backed up heading westbound on the bridge.

    • Kate February 10, 2019 (7:33 pm)

Vehicles are now turning around westbound on the bridge and driving the opposite direction.

  • Rutger February 10, 2019 (7:27 pm)

As a restoration carpenter and lifelong builder/contractor/tradesman I would like to point out that regional record snow accumulation also means maxing out construction minimum requirements for snow loads on roofs. Especially if you have flat roofs, sweep the snow off while you can (I just did). That winter mix that may occur can get absorbed into the fluffy stuff and gain weight rapidly, collapsing roofs… Also you could end up with ice or slush dams where molten snow water backs up, and gets under shingles leading to leaks and interior damage…

    • pbm February 10, 2019 (7:53 pm)

What is the minimum snow load for most roofs? How do you suggest clearing as much as is easily doable? Thanks!

      • Jethro Marx February 10, 2019 (8:37 pm)

Something like 80 to 120 pounds per square foot, which is enough for many feet of snow. So, unless you’re quite spry and have cat-like reflexes, don’t climb on your roof, especially when it’s icy; if you do, expect to fall off, at least once. If you climb ladders professionally, nothing is more frightening than watching an amateur climb a ladder, much less get on a roof to shovel snow. YOUR ROOF IS NOT GOING TO COLLAPSE. And get over the sidewalk shoveling thing too; it’s not that important and those who make it out to be are looking for something to get officious about. I hope they’ve never gone 32 in a 30 mph zone. The horror!

      • WS Structural Engineer February 10, 2019 (9:40 pm)

For buildings within King County the typical/minimum design snow load for roofs is 25 pounds per square foot (psf). I know this minimum has been in place since at least 2001. The design standard used to calculate snow load assumes a snow density of 16.6 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) which is slightly larger than the typical density of wet snow, therefore dividing the roof design load (25psf) by the density of the snow (16.6pcf) would result in roughly 1′-6″ of snow. Ice build-up or firmly compacted snow  (similar to you compacting the snow with your hands to make a hard snowball) can greatly increase the density of the snow. Assuming a home was properly engineered (the designers used the proper factors of safety and material properties/strengths when sizing members) and the roof has redundancy (roof trusses/beams spaced evenly) a failure would occur around +/-65psf.  Overall there are a lot of factors and variables that go into calculating snow load and the strength of the structural members supporting a roof so this is just a simple summary. Hope this helps!

    • Jes February 10, 2019 (8:09 pm)

Do you have any tips on how to remove the snow from the roof safely? I was thinking about the load issue but thought it would be a bad idea to climb on my snowy roof.

      • JC February 10, 2019 (8:41 pm)

Ditto!  I think it would be super dangerous to climb my 2nd story snowy roof but now i’m concerned!

        • trickycoolj February 10, 2019 (8:55 pm)

I think it’s really only a big deal for flat roofs and things like carports that don’t have very much structure to them.  Lots of carport/boat marina roof collapses in 1996 when the ice rain came in.  That said, if you have one of those flat roof Tetris-block townhomes you might want to shovel off your roof deck/patio so that your drain doesn’t get overwhelmed and flood down your walls.

    • Pdxmark February 10, 2019 (8:27 pm)

I was thinking about that earlier if that will be an issue with roofs.  The snow we have is quite heavy!

  • ArborHeightsFamily February 10, 2019 (7:36 pm)

Anyone have a suggestion on commuting from Arbor Heights down to SODO right by Costco tomorrow AM? Hubby usually goes down Roxbury and Olson place.

    • Forgotmyname February 10, 2019 (8:05 pm)

4th to 128th to 509N. 4th ave is pretty gentle  116th and 106/7/8th would be the best streets east to 4th

  • Kate February 10, 2019 (7:39 pm)

Watched a couple cars go the wrong way back down the bridge, now someone walking it.

    • T February 10, 2019 (8:23 pm)

Is the westbound bridge being plowed, salted, sanded (whatever SDOT has done in the recent past) in the photo above? I am surprised it got as bad as it looks.

  • Chauncey February 10, 2019 (7:42 pm)

Any idea what is going on at the admiral exit from the bridge? We are in a taxi and it is blocked / stopped at the bottom of the hill

  • Watching February 10, 2019 (7:45 pm)

Watching sdot cammeras. Person abandoned car and starting walking West bound on the bridge. Right before pullout.

  • cjboffoli February 10, 2019 (7:48 pm)

I know that all of this snow has been causing people a lot of inconvenience, but I have to say that all of the quiet has been wonderful. I live close to a busy arterial and the lack of trucks, buses, loud mufflers, motorcycles, boom box cars, leaf blowers, barking dogs, etc. has been heavenly.

    • WS lady February 10, 2019 (7:57 pm)

Quiet should  be a priority.  I agree.

    • Brenda February 10, 2019 (7:57 pm)

      That’s awesome!!

    • WSMom February 10, 2019 (8:17 pm)

You must not have kids. Anything but quiet in my house. 😭😭😆😆

      • HS February 10, 2019 (8:25 pm)

    • T February 11, 2019 (12:26 am)

I agree. Silence is golden. Really enjoying it. Also love how the snow acts as a sound insulator. There’s also a cool brightness at night.

  • Mn February 10, 2019 (7:52 pm)

Looked like there were 4 cars that slid into each other on the offramp and the westbound bridge has a atalled car. Looks like the traffic is moving again on the bridge but admiral way is at a standstill. We’re watching it from our living room! Stay safe!

  • Mn February 10, 2019 (7:53 pm)

I would avoid the bridge going to Fauntleroy. I’m watching cars slide backwards on the incline.

  • HelperMonkey February 10, 2019 (7:59 pm)

Just came up 35th past Roxbury. It’s covered and people were stuck. Be safe out there, everyone!

  • Amy February 10, 2019 (8:07 pm)

This is a general question: how many people are actually planning on going into their dental appointments tomorrow? Granted you have one scheduled. Just curious lol. :)

    • Trickycoolj February 10, 2019 (8:23 pm)

My dentist in Greenlake already posted to their FB page that they would be closed and calling to reschedule. Their team lives outside the city.

    • McFindlay February 10, 2019 (9:11 pm)

I do have a dentist appointment tomorrow and I’m certainly not going! Sadly this was rescheduled from last week due to the snow too…I feel bad for small business owners. All of this snow must be taking a toll, as much as I love it!

  • EJ February 10, 2019 (8:21 pm)

Thiststle is an ice rink now. A few people have made it up after turning left off of California but I’ve seen two slide back down after they got to about 42nd….

  • MercyMoi February 10, 2019 (8:36 pm)

SPU just updated their website – NO pick up tomorrow (Monday). They will attempt to pick up Monday’s trash/recycling/yard waste on Tuesday.See link in WSB’s list, above.

    • WSB February 10, 2019 (8:44 pm)

      Thanks for catching that first.

  • aa February 10, 2019 (8:49 pm)

Best advice for how to get around tomorrow morning?  Don’t!    And please don’t let the lack of snowfall in the morning fool you, by the time you are ready to come home its going to be a mess! Komo weather report describes Monday afternoon as “extremely dangerous driving conditions”.

Please all, be kind to each other. Or, quietly and grumpily report everyone to SDCI. You can report us too; we have a sidewalk totally blocked under a fallen hedge section we can’t do anything about until this is all over, at which point I’d bet it’ll take us weeks to get an appointment with a tree service. Meantime, someone just tweeted this video of what might be the youngest snow-shoveler in West Seattle:

Does anyone know how Highland Park Way hill is looking. Will need to attempt that or another route to Georgetown in the morning.

It got over 34 degrees on our backyard weather station thermometer here in Arbor Heights and snow was melting off of the leaves and roof. It’s down to 32 again now but I’m wondering if the incoming precipitation tomorrow is going to be slush or just rain?

    • WSB February 10, 2019 (11:14 pm)

The NWS says it’s almost impossible to tell. The writer of the late-night “forecast discussion” says, “Monday afternoon forecast probably the toughest forecast in the 32 plus years I have been here.”

I spent the better part of daylight hours this weekend walking in West Seattle with my 11 year old daughter.  I also shoveled my driveway and took the car out one time.  People complaining about sidewalks not being shoveled—I’m sorry but that is ridiculous.  Shoveling snow is not easy and walking on the snow and ice isn’t that challenging.  Take a walking stick, mop handle, hiking poles or whatever.  They help a lot in case you do slip; you can catch yourself before you slip too far.   Main roads are fine to drive on.  But if you are trying to drive on side streets or get off of side streets and don’t have four wheel drive or substantial experience driving in the snow, please don’t try.  It’s not easy or safe.  And not worth the effort.  Walk if you can or bus.  If you have food and shelter and don’t absolutely have to be at work, you don’t need to go out.  If you want to get out for fun, walk.  This isn’t that hard or complicated.  If there is a hill and it is not a major road, it will be ice if it is 32 degrees or less.

We were walking back from our 2 mile trek to thriftway from Brandon/30th area when this latest round of snow hit. It’s a giant slippery mess out there for sure.  maybe only 25% of the sidewalks we encountered in our route thru high point and down to Morgan junction were shoveled. And the most slippery were even those sidewalks right on the block behind thriftway. Be careful everyone. We got one of the last boxes of unbroken eggs and the bread aisle pretty cleared out minus some gluten free type buns and stuff. Many cars sliding backwards sideways down hills as well. Be safe everyone!!

Aha that’s funny, same before the last snow, only gluten free bread loaves left – and some plunker was dissing Seattle recently during the snow, some nonsense about “gluten free breadlines”…

FYI, as of 330am 35th is a sheet of ice from Hudson southbound.  WS bridge is also very icy.

Seems like there a lot of issues on the roads and west seattle bridge last night. How do they look this morning? Any better?
