8:19 PM: We’re starting to get some Sunday info. We’re continuing to update our local lists, linked above, but will also note major announcements like this – Shalimar Gonzales, executive director of the West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor), says, “Our WS location will be open 10 am-3 pm on Sunday. Our pool will close at 2:30. Fauntleroy will remain closed.” … Grocery report: Phoebe e-mailed to say West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is well-stocked now … In earlier coverage, we reported on a truck getting stuck on the SW Edmunds hill in The Junction. Jake reports it’s bad tonight too and wanted to warn you: “Edmunds east of 42nd is an ice sheet. Two collisions … cars going downhill and locking up, unable to stop.”

(WSDOT cam framegrab, 1st Ave. S. Bridge NB side stuck)

9:27 PM: Trouble with the 1st Avenue South Bridge – the State Patrol says NB 509 will be “closed for a couple hours” as a result.

10:39 PM: And it was fixed in less than an hour. So let’s look at a couple pretty photos that came in tonight – from Micah Summers, the Seattle Chinese Garden on Puget Ridge:

And this High Point scene is from Breton:

And just in – though the Farmers’ Market is still on so far as we know, the city’s scheduled WSFM booth to take opinions about the future 48th/Charlestown park has been POSTPONED to a future date. (You can still take the online survey linked in our recent story.)

I just crossed it WB, totally clear, but I drove the speed limit just in case.Unless there’s precipitation overnight you should be good in the morning.

West Seattle Bridge (and all main roads and arterials) are fine. No ice or slick, as safe looking and feeling as a rainy day. The city appears to be doing a good job on the main parts. I just got back from SODO area and WSeaBridge, Airport Way, Spokane St. 4th. So, etc are practically dry. But I also saw constant plows go up and back(with their plows up, not in use) so they ARE out there! WSBridge should be fine for you. (1st. So. Bridge span in the n/b direction seems stuck open, I came across s/b fine.)

In case it helps someone, I just did Ambaum from downtown Burien up to 107th and it was okay. Compact snow with some pavement and very light traffic. Was worried about the twisty bit between 116th and 120th but it was fine.

Yes, ditto mistyavalon! WSB has been my go-to since I discovered it in 2006 during that big snowstorm! Thank you for all you do and I hope you’re getting some rest during all of this! :-)

FYI the West Seattle YMCA is also open as a warming center today for any member of the public who can show a gov’t issued ID. Same hours, 10 am – 3 pm. They’re offering a warm place to hang out, warm drinks, and a hot shower if you want it.

For others:  it looks like SPU waste pickup changes get announced at 6-7AM   https://twitter.com/SeattleSPUSigned – a Monday customer with an extra week of stuff expecting more snow this evening.

    • carole February 10, 2019 (12:25 pm)

They should give us Monday folks a break. Rotate who gets a week delay.  Monday got the last one. Next time Tuesday, if there’s a third, Wednesday, etc.  I think Friday got missed as well, because their Saturday delay was cancelled. With this weekend’s storm coming in, and another on the horizon next weekend, we Mondays could be looking at a month’s worth of trash if they repeat the old pattern.

Anyone know if junction pizza deliveries are available? Pagliacci Or Zeeks? Or open for take out?

I have to say it, Metro needs a better snow plan. I just met two people waiting for a bus on Alki.  Their transit app said a bus was coming, but there have been no buses or shuttles down here for 2 days. I had to inform them that there are only 49 routes operating in the city and they had to walk up to California to try to catch the 128 .  Metro  needs to be more flexible to provide service to more parts of the city, even if it is infrequent during snow events. For example, they cancelled the Ride2 service. But if they had kept it going but advertised it will only serve the main (cleared) arterials, people could at least walk to those arterials to have access to transportation to connect to the few routes actually running. At the very least Metro should have better communications with the transit apps so that people don’t expect a bus when one is never coming. If public transportation going to be so  undependable, we will have a hard time convincing people not to just stick to using their cars if they have them. And it is totally unfair to people who are dependent on public transportation. I understand Metro’s mission is very difficult, but I believe Metro has a lot to answer for about this drastic reduction in service.

    • BrianK February 10, 2019 (11:39 am)

Metro is on what’s called an Emegency Snow Network (ESN) which is greatly reduced to serving key core routes.  The 50 and Alki are not considered key routes. Apps are third party (not KC Metro) developed and are not updated for ESN events. I have empathy, because I live around the corner from Alki Starbucks. Unless either the water taxi is working and I can drive down and park/walk I am stuck down here and can’t get to work downtown.  I have snowphobia as far as driving is concerned so I’m hoping my employer will let me telecommute.  Folks need to sign up on KC Metros website for alerts and notifications.  They are doing the best they can to keep the public and their employees moving and safe.  Sometimes that takes making hard decisions.

    • Katie February 10, 2019 (11:50 am)

I usually take the 50  and have been making due this week for work and errands with the C line, 21, and 120 in various combinations. I don’t really think this is metros fault, all of the trips I have taken (9 or so busses in the past few days) have included more walking than I’m used to but the busses have been running as the emergency plan intends. Vver more than 10 minutes delayed for my trips so far. Frustrating to have third party apps not mention cancelled routes, but on metros end specifically? I think they’re doing great getting people close(ish) to where they need to go safely during these conditions.

Another beautiful photo, thank you Dave! (From Chris and Laura in San Fran)

  • LyndaB February 10, 2019 (12:02 pm)

Home Depot report: No deicer, sand or snow shovels.  Other shovels available.  :) Delridge looks good from Home Depot northward.  Alki Beach to Admiral good to go.  Sunfish, Top Pot, and Cactus were businesses I noticed that were open.

According to U Dub climatologist Cliff Mass Seattle is guaranteed more snow Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Only uncertainty is the amount of snow coming in Monday:https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2019/02/a-modest-snow-event-later-today.html

Sorry, comment time is over.
