WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Saturday morning/afternoon updates

(Texted photo, cross-country skiing south of Alki Point)

8:09 AM: Good morning! If you went to bed last night thinking the forecast had fizzled short of big snow – as we chronicled into the early-early-morning hours, it resumed in a major way. We’re starting our morning updates now – any info to share, 206-293-6302, text or voice. Stay home and stay safe.

LATEST FORECAST/ALERTS: National Weather Service‘s Seattle site
METRO ‘EMERGENCY SNOW NETWORK’: Service reduced to these routes
SOUND TRANSIT ALERTS: See left side of this page
SDOT WINTER-RESPONSE MAP: Here’s where SDOT has treated/plowed.
TRAFFIC CAMS PAGE: Our compilation of local cameras.
SDOT CITYWIDE CAMS ETC. PAGE: Year-round “travelers” map with cams/more.
SEATTLE PARKS & RECREATION: Saturday updates here
SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARIES: Closed today.
SOLID WASTE COLLECTION: Canceled today, per SPU
BUSINESS NOTES: Open, closed, changed – adding as received
CANCELLATIONS/POSTPONEMENTS/NON-BIZ CLOSURES: Continuing to update this list
EARLIER COVERAGE: Friday night/very early Saturday here; Friday afternoon/evening here

8:29 AM: Even if you think you can try the roads, please don’t. Problems from scanner and hotline in just the past few minutes include a stuck truck at 40th/Edmunds (photo added below after tow arrived), and wires down at 28th/Kenyon and 46th and Stevens. …

No city cameras on Delridge Way so thanks to Sage K for this photo from near Boren STEM K-8:

9:18 AM: Another addition to the link/shortcut info list above – solid-waste collection, which was already on a one-day delay, is CANCELED today. … If you can get there safely, some restaurants and other businesses ARE open, and we’re continuing to update our list. At both ends of the peninsula, two WSB sponsors – Endolyne Joe’s (Fauntleroy) and Mission Cantina (Admiral) – ARE open right now, for breakfast/brunch respectively. Meantime, we just measured our snow. 7″ in Upper Fauntleroy. … Multiple WSB’ers remind us, take care of the birds! (updated) Lise emails:

Remind people to bring their hummingbird feeders indoors overnight so they can thaw and put out a bowl of water for when they rest. Which could also be brought indoors overnight to thaw.

10:03 AM: This Alki photo tweeted by @AggieDave also carries a reminder:

While the snow is currently at flurry level – and “tapering off” per the NWS – wind is expected to increase and that means blowing snow as well as trouble for snow-laden, weakened tree branches. … Another road report: US Postal Service truck reportedly in trouble at 35th/Southern in Gatewood. (added) Speaking of forecasts, Babs just mentioned in a comment that weather analyst Cliff Mass has just published an update. Still looking like more big snow next week!

11:05 AM: Still snowing. From @LO on Twitter: “Home Depot is out of ice melter but True Value has quite a good stock (5 pallets) as of 10:50 am!” … Best sledding is at parks. More on that in a moment – posting a found dog – if you’re new to WSB, note that we have kept the only all-WS lost/found pets page for more than a decade now; find it here. (added) Back to sledding – @GDH415 tweeted this video of sledding at Westcrest Park in Highland Park:

The updated Seattle Parks roundup for today (also linked in our list above) says parks are open but beware of tree branches. Also, while West Seattle Golf Course is closed for golf, it’s open for sledding/snow play. … @roncreel tweeted this pic of a neighborhood where, as Ron put it, “sharing is caring”:

11:36 AM: Road update from the city – “SDOT has 34 snow and ice vehicles treating major streets and thoroughfares throughout the city. Morning and afternoon crews will focus on maintaining bare and wet pavement conditions on major arterials.” That goes with this texted photo from the west end of SW Roxbury:

And a new pic of Delridge, this one from Joy, looking north from the Youngstown pedestrian overpass:

11:55 AM: Side streets, however, are generally trouble. But check out this rescue on 55th SW (texted photo):

12:40 PM: Continuing to update both the business-info page (some businesses are making decisions now about closing early) and the cancellations/postponements page (some churches have canceled Sunday services, for example) – both are linked above. Earlier we mentioned the city’s update on SDOT snow/ice crews – here’s the link to today’s full roundup with status of city services. … Another road-condition-where-there’s-no-cameras photo, SW Thistle toward its highest point:

Thanks again for all the great photos – we’re building a separate gallery to link before we launch afternoon coverage in the next few hours.

12:58 PM: Scanner – Fairmount & Hanford, tree down across Fairmount, brought wires down too. SCL advice: “We’ve received many reports of downed power lines. If you see a downed line, keep a safe distance (at least 20 feet) and report it to (206) 684-3000. If it appears to be sparking or smoking, call 911. Crews will respond to each report.”

1:21 PM: 39th/Hanford, split utility pole, also per scanner. (added) Eric sends this photo – tree down as part of it too:

Thanks also to Frank for calling with word of this (and sending the second photo) … BUS INFO: We also have an update from Metro – the Emergency Snow Network will continue TFN:

Service on Metro’s Emergency Snow Network (ESN) began 4 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, and will continue until further notice. Freezing temperatures are expected to persist and Metro has chained up its bus fleet to operate on these core routes, which primarily serve key arterials and transit centers in many parts of King County. Dozens of buses became stuck overnight due to roadway conditions, signaling ongoing challenges with roadway conditions. The forecast calls for difficult weather conditions in the days ahead.

The ESN service prioritizes service on high-ridership routes and avoids areas with steep hills. The routes were developed in coordination and collaboration with jurisdictions and take advantage of designated snow plow plans, including the City of Seattle.

Routes served

Routes operating as part of the ESN will serve core centers around King County, via routes 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 21, 24, 24 shuttle, 31, 32, 36, 40, 41, 44, 45, 48, 62, 62 shuttle, 65, 70, 75, 90 shuttle, 101, 102 shuttle, 106, 106 shuttle, 120, 124, 128, 150, 166, 168, 169, 180, 181, 235, 245, 248, 252/255 shuttle, 255, 255 shuttle, 271, 331, 345, 348, 348 shuttle, 372 Woodinville and 372 Lake City, ST 522, ST 545, ST 550, ST 554, ST 554 shuttle, RapidRide A, B, C, D, E and F lines.

The full announcement is now online here – including a caveat for riders – the ESN is NOT reflected in apps and the Puget Sound Trip Planner.

1:57 PM: Police are responding to word of a tree down at 34th/Admiral, southbound lanes. (added) Nika sent a photo:

2:21 PM: Sun’s out. And sledding continues in many places:

Thanks to Aidan Grambihler for that photo.

3:55 PM: Back after a break. As noted in comments, a NEW weather alert – Winter Storm Watch for Sunday afternoon through Tuesday night. … Several local churches have canceled Sunday services, and we’re adding to the Cancellations/Postponements (etc.) list. … ArtsWest, meantime, says its Saturday and Sunday shows are ON … Latest updates to our Businesses Open/Closed/Etc. list include the Admiral Theater now OPEN, as of mid-afternoon. … As a reminder that we’ve had a few hours of sunshine now, this photo from David Hutchinson at Constellation Park:

5:13 PM: Evening coverage launching soon. Meantime, we also now have a gallery up with some of the many photos we’ve received but hadn’t already published – see it here – and don’t miss the comment thread below, where many cool images have been posted too. Be safe tonight – the temp could drop into the teens!

P.S. Evening updates are here.

It’s still coming down strong at our house and we’ve got at least 8 inches. We just put the hummer feeder back out and it’s covered with snow already. Poor birds they’re flying around looking for cover and food…hope our neighbor is keeping their “fend” for itself kitty in the house!!!

    • Julia February 9, 2019 (9:08 am)

Not sure if it would help with snow cover, but I wrapped our hummingbird feeder in non-LED Christmas lights and kept it from freezing. It’s under a roof so doesn’t get much snow on it.

    Love this picture.

  • C-hawks February 9, 2019 (9:01 am)

Looking east and west on theWSB pedestrian overpass at 8:50am. Most people are driving nice and slow, others need to slowdown. Sure is beautiful and quiet out!

  • barbara s spector February 9, 2019 (9:14 am)

I put an umbrella over the feeder, they like it!  Wish I had a heat lamp for them.

  • GWS February 9, 2019 (9:20 am)

SDOT in it’s infinite wisdom ran a plow up and down Charlestown this morning and salted.  Not the best sledding conditions :-(

    • Sledder February 9, 2019 (10:02 am)

Kids are sledding at Madison Middle School. Some kids are heading over to Hamilton Viewpoint Park to sled.

      • Patrick Mazzuca February 9, 2019 (10:28 am)

Hamilton Park looks fantastic for sledding.

    • whatup February 9, 2019 (10:41 am)

Living near the Charlestown hill I’m glad it’s been salted.  It is too steep for children, usually it’s only inebriated adults that use it.  Use the hill one block north, it’s safer.

    • GHO February 9, 2019 (10:52 am)

I don’t know why it has to be said every year, but it apparently does. Down the middle of an “open” street is not a safe place to sled. Drivers are slipping down, or using speed to get up, and then they are trying to avoid moving hazards. And then there’s the cross-traffic below. Do you know where your kids are?

      • WSB February 9, 2019 (10:55 am)

I am just adding a note about sledding to the narrative above. Parks are open and West Seattle has some with great slopes if you can get there – Westcrest, Myrtle, Hamilton for starters.

  • Jack February 9, 2019 (9:23 am)

  • JCK February 9, 2019 (9:32 am)

Does anyone know if Bartell’s pharmacy (at Jefferson Square) is planning to be open today? They are not answering their phone.

    • T February 9, 2019 (9:52 am)

Bartell’s sent out an email yesterday saying all of their pharmacy’s would be open all weekend. Now it probably depends on how many people could make it in to work.

    • tripo February 9, 2019 (11:09 am)

Can confirm, as of 10 minutes ago, the Jefferson Bartells is closed.

  • Mj February 9, 2019 (9:32 am)

Please clear your sidewalks of snow, it’s required by Seattle Municipal Code and is a safety issue for pedestrians.  Also clear your access to your mail box for the postal carrier and other delivery people.

    • Tsurly February 9, 2019 (10:06 am)

Or leave it for those of us Xcountry skiing. I’ve been putting perfect tracks down since 0530. lots of people out enjoying it.

      • J February 9, 2019 (10:18 am)

Thank you! Looks like perfect conditions!

      • Loretta February 9, 2019 (12:11 pm)

hey TSurly – what are the roads like to bike to downtown?! Please post on Monday!!

        • Tsurly February 9, 2019 (1:26 pm)

You know I will report. I also cleared my sidewalk and those of two houses on each side of me. Some good melt going on. Hopefully the cold tonight can dry them out before the next round.

    • Jamie February 9, 2019 (11:37 am)

Yeah we’ve been skiing too! The alleys are especially good for it.

  • KM February 9, 2019 (9:35 am)

I couldnt get the link to work in to forums, how can we help the birds?

    • WSB February 9, 2019 (9:40 am)

Sorry, didn’t realize it was just an attempt to post a photo. Fixing with this info from Lise, who emailed us:
“If possible remind people to bring their hummingbird feeders indoors overnight so they can thaw and put out a bowl of water for they rest. Which could also be brought indoors overnight to thaw. “

      • KM February 9, 2019 (9:52 am)

Thanks! We’ll be shoveling and putting out a bowl or two shortly.

    • Kate February 9, 2019 (9:54 am)

What kind of birds do you have in your yard specifically? Biggest concern are the Hummies, making sure they have access to fresh sugar water (boil 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, cool to room temp, fill feeder OR use the Kaytee ElectroNectar–clear, not red dyed); feeders must be PLASTIC ONES not fancy ones with metal parts!! They will freeze, Hummies will get stuck (tongues and/or feet). Bring feeders in at night, place back out right before Dawn. my hummingbird was ready to eat right at 7 this morning; when I replaced the feeders, within a few minutes she flew over to feed and was cautious about landing on the feeder possibly because of snow/ice, so she hovered and ate, but then she came back and sat for quite a while filling up!!! it’s very windy down here on Alki and even though it’s not snowing anymore I moved one of the feeders under her eucalyptus tree so it would remain relatively snow free the other one is a bit slushy but it’s where she likes to eat so I put it there and will monitor it through the day to make sure it doesn’t iced over. I do not have warming lights, but I read that if you find a hummingbird who is on the ground or who seems to still be asleep in the morning after sunrise, to put it in a cardboard box with holes and a lid, bring it in and allow it to warm up for a while; make sure it’s in a secure safe, place and then once it has come out of torpor, make sure it has access to fresh sugar water and bring it back outside to release. My other birds including song sparrows, house sparrows, spotted towhee, juncos, starlings, chickadees– all seem to be doing okay with the suet and seed I put down and making sure to put seed down on areas that are not covered in snow, so under bushes or trees that are not heavily snow-covered. I stocked up on suet —peanut-based suet (nice and fatty and good protein) and lots of bird seed as well as peanuts for the crows to help them through the winter storm! Birds are tough– dare I say more so then the majority of humans! But I suppose that’s true of most species who have to live with in nature!!! You are welcome to contact me with further questions. Or repost my suggestions in the forum area. It might be a repeat of other people’s information, but I’m an avid birder and Crow researcher, so have some knowledge to share, and enjoy talking about our feathered Friends!

      • Kathleen Whitson February 9, 2019 (10:35 am)

Great info. Thanks! A master birder friend of mine has suggested a stronger hummingbird sugar solution for freezing weather: 3 parts water to 1 part sugar. It resists freezing longer and the little guys get more bang for the buck when they need it most.

      • just wondering February 9, 2019 (10:59 am)

Thanks for your info.  My hummingbird feeder (plastic) is under the eave off my back deck so the sugar water did not freeze.  The hummingbirds are very busy, even hovering while I refilled it!  I also put a swipe of peanut butter out then put bird seed on it.  It disappears quickly.

      • KM February 9, 2019 (11:18 am)

This is great information. We don’t have any feeders on our property, but we’ll do what we can with basic plastic dishes and your solution in a covered and accessible area. We have an Anna’s Hummingbird (?) who loves our camilla tree, which is not providing much of anything right now, though I did clear it of heavy snow as it had a lot of weight on it.

      • Julia February 9, 2019 (11:19 am)

I have wrapped the feeder in non-LED Christmas lights to keep it from freezing. It’s on my covered deck.

        • Julia February 9, 2019 (11:55 am)

One is wrapped, the other not. The birds are smart enough to prefer the warmer food even if both are unfrozen.

          • k February 9, 2019 (1:06 pm)

I rigged my feeder with this 50watt infared bulb (reptile heater) .

          • Lynn February 9, 2019 (4:39 pm)

I have bird seed but no feeder. MET market, Bartells do not sell them and West Seattle Nursery is too far to walk to. I made a diy feeder with a plastic bottle and a spoon for the birds to perch and feed but no customers so far.

  • Kristen February 9, 2019 (9:58 am)

    Snowy Delridge.

  • babs February 9, 2019 (10:01 am)

For those who follow Cliff Mass’s blog, he just posted an update.  More storms coming, egads.

  • Kersti February 9, 2019 (10:02 am)

Also do not use raw sugar in Hummer feeders. Only white. They cannot process the iron

    • Kate February 9, 2019 (10:22 am)

Yes, yes!! Thank you for adding that, so important!! Here’s my little one just now!! I’ll be checking on the nectar throughout the day

    • KM February 9, 2019 (11:13 am)

Oh that’s good to know thank you! I just verified our sugar from PCC doesn’t have any iron in it.

  • ElizaC February 9, 2019 (10:06 am)

Does anyone know how Admiral is heading towards the West Seattle bridge?

  • waikikigirl February 9, 2019 (10:18 am)

@Kate, I don’t know you but adore you and your luv of birds! Neighbors think I’m nuts because I help the crows in all seasons…who cares and this morning the hubby said one of our hummers was looking in our bedroom window seeming to say “hey mister when you putting the feeders back out”?  LOL!    Thank you for all your information.

    • Kate February 9, 2019 (10:33 am)

@waikikigirl Aww, thank you!!! All animals we cohabitate with deserve our attention! They bring so much to our lives. Birding is an act of attending to and being present in the world. You are not crazy!! People have a very skewed idea about crows and there is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about these birds. I may have learned more about humans in my research, I think, than I have about these birds (which is a lot)!! I am a writer and educator and working on 2 children’s books about crows, particularly my special needs crow, Hook and her family (you can learn about her on my Instagram if at all interested @pinnednpenned!). Looking forward to attending the Olympic Peninsula Bird Fest in April, learning from the presenters there, sharing my experiences,  and hopefully meeting John Marzloff, the UW wildlife biologist and Crow researcher! Hope you are enjoying the snow and a little reprieve from the hustle and bustle!! Warmly, Kate

      • Lynn February 9, 2019 (4:41 pm)

Kate,Do you know where i can buy bird feeder in Admiral? I’ve called Met Market and Bartells, both dont have them. Sad.

        • Kate February 9, 2019 (7:22 pm)

@lynn Hi Lynn! Sorry I’m seeing this a little bit later than when you posted. Honestly most of the birds, other than hummingbirds, will enjoy eating on the ground—particularly particularly the song sparrows and towhees particularly the song sparrows and towhees and juncos I never see them out of feeder only my white capped sparrows and my house sparrows come to the main feeder.  If you can find a spot to scatter seed, (if you have a yard) in an area that’s not covered by snow or you could always put it out on a little plate on the ground –most of our songbirds really do enjoy pecking around on the ground, even in snow. The hummingbirds are the main concern due to cold and very specific feeding needs, but the only place you can probably get hummingbird feeder and food is up at the True value in the Alaska Junction. As for seed at your place I would just put it on a plate on the ground and they’ll come! if they’re not used to your yard then it can be tricky. I had really bad wind down here because I live on the beach , and it was hard for the crows to get their food today.  I had to find a variety of places where they felt comfortable enough and actually could land without being torn from the ground —the winds are only going to get worse and they can be pretty picky about where they like to eat –the smaller songbirds not so much! Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me in a direct message! My website is roots2learning.com and use contact me

          • Lynn February 9, 2019 (10:29 pm)

Great tips! Ok, I’ll scatter tomorrow!  We don’t have a yard only a patio of a 4 storey apartment building but they won’t come either because they dont see it or they spot my nosey 16 y.o. cat in the window. But i can pour some in the ground. Thanks for the advice!

  • lunaballz February 9, 2019 (10:22 am)

Has anyone tried any busses today? I need to take the 120 into downtown for work, but I’m not confident the bus’ll show on time after the snow earlier this week

    • Pdxmark February 9, 2019 (10:34 am)

I saw a few 120’s traveling in both directions on North Delridge this morning.  The 120 should be fine, traffic is light as most people are staying home.

    • AMD February 9, 2019 (10:47 am)

I haven’t tried yet today, but based on past experience I would give yourself at least 30-60 minutes extra, both for the unpredictable arrival time and because the buses will be traveling SLOWLY.  In this kind of weather, they don’t really stick to the set schedule, they just get there when they can.  The 120 has always been reliable for me in snow, though.  I’m lucky to live on that route.

  • Kim February 9, 2019 (10:27 am)

Alki to California on Admiral is slushy but driveable with AWD. The side streets are filled with sleds and skis—and people are crossing wherever—but going slowly up and down was fine. Just slow and cautious.

  • Antoinette February 9, 2019 (10:30 am)

WS bridge was clear just 20 mins ago.  It gets worse as you head towards Bellevue/Issaquah.  Seattle has some good salted roads.  Out here, not so much

  • Linda February 9, 2019 (11:10 am)

@Kate:  thank you for the tip about metal hummingbird feeders.  I just bought an extra feeder and it’s all metal.  Guess I’ll be saving that for better weather.  I have two feeders, one for the front yard hummingbird and one for the backyard hummingbird (positioned so neither bird can perch with a visual on both so neither of them can claim both feeders as  theirs).  I had one spare feeder and was using that to switch out frozen feeders for a thawed on but Monday’s cold snap defeated that as both feeders were freezing about the same time (has never happened before).   I had bought an extra on Wednesday in preparation for this weather, it’s the all metal one.  Guess I’ll just have to hope the front yard feeder which is more sheltered doesn’t freeze as fast as it was on Monday.  I also bought a heat lamp at Home Depot on Thursday, we’ll be rigging this outside today to provide a warming station for the hummingbirds. I had my hummingbird feeders out shortly before 7:00 a.m. this morning and could already hear both birds chirping near where the feeders are located.  About two hours ago I cleared the snow off the bird bath and put out fresh water, birds were drinking as soon as I cleared out of the area.  I also stocked up on suet and bird seed, suet feeder is full and bird seed feeder is filled.   I also have a clean bamboo skewer which works great for clearing the snow out of the feeding holes in the hummingbird feeders when they fill up with snow. My backyard has two northern flickers, white striped sparrows, golden crowned sparrow, song sparrows, house sparrows, juncos, towhees, gold finches, house finches, chestnut backed chickadees, black capped chickadees, bewick’s wrens, crows and even a robin this morning.  I’m always amazed at the variety of bird’s at the feeder here in the Morgan junction area!

    • Katanderina February 9, 2019 (1:40 pm)

I just wrapped my humming bird feeder in non-led christmas lights. Its keeping the nectar liquid and giving off a tiny bit of “warmth” from the lights. It is definitely being happily used!

    • Kate February 9, 2019 (7:29 pm)

@linda Hi Linda!! That sounds awesome! I think I’m going to rig a light tomorrow, getting one from True value that’s typically used outdoors in chicken coops. It’s just gotten so windy down here on Alki –the wind chill is dropping precipitously and I’m super worried about overnight and the decreasing temperature’s tomorrow. Today was fairly mild most of our snow in Sunny areas melted and it was really awesome that the sun came out but I think tomorrow is going to be a different story!!  I never have any finches anymore –I used to have two couples but that was years ago. I have one spotted towhee who comes around and one Song Sparrow. and yesterday spotted a bewick’s wren for the first time!! Did you participate in the Audubon bird count this Christmas?

  • Tf February 9, 2019 (11:12 am)

We’re out of town but flying back tomorrow night. Any updates on restocking of deicer  and shovels for us to pick up on Monday would be greatly appreciated!

  • wsgolfer February 9, 2019 (11:22 am)

Anyone know if the nursery is open? There’s a class scheduled for this afternoon that we’re signed up for. Thanks!

  • JayDee February 9, 2019 (11:23 am)

@ Linda: My hummingbird feeders were on the same side of off the house and I noted that the beautiful but mean hummers were fighting for them. So I moved one to the front porch and hopefully some will find it. Thanks.

    • Linda February 9, 2019 (12:47 pm)

They are so territorial and will claim any feeder within their monitoring area.  Reminds me of Yertle the Turtle, “I am the king of all I see”.

The one challenge leaving bird seed and suiet if you have remenents fall on the ground it attracts rats and with all the development in west Seattle there is a significant increase in their population

  • ACG February 9, 2019 (12:17 pm)

Hi neighbors!!  Stay out of the trails on Fauntleroy Park. We are hearing branches snapping and falling off trees. Don’t want another tragedy like a few years ago.

  • Photon February 9, 2019 (12:18 pm)

Anyone know if the Westwood Village QFC and/or Target are open?

    • ACG February 9, 2019 (1:16 pm)

I’d call and see if anyone answers.

      • mqvn February 9, 2019 (1:22 pm)

Walked there this morning with the kids.  Both are open.

    • waikikigirl February 9, 2019 (1:43 pm)

They are open, we were just there they have signs up stating they’ll close at 11pm though and so is Pet Pro, but only until 5pm.

      • BlairJ February 9, 2019 (4:33 pm)

I was at WWV QFC at 2PM today and they had just changed the signs to say closing at 7 PM.

    • Photon February 9, 2019 (2:14 pm)

      Thank you!

Not sure why the picture didn’t post initially or why it’s sideways…

      • WSB February 9, 2019 (12:55 pm)

If you shot it vertically that might turn it sideways when uploading – always hold the phone horizontally for photos. Anyway, I can and will fix it … TR

  • Buttercup February 9, 2019 (12:48 pm)

I love this!! Don’t love that one of my trees on my boulevard snapped and fell on my car. The tree next to it was 3 splits in High branches and landed on neighbors car. No damage to vehicles poor trees though. Anyone know someone who can cut and haul in a few days.? Still love the snow though😍

  • Quora February 9, 2019 (12:51 pm)

Cliff Mass now saying models show a big whopper storm on Monday-Tuesday; potentially another foot of snow.

  • Pat February 9, 2019 (12:55 pm)

I have an all-glass Couronne-brand hummingbird feeder (glass base and lid), NO plastic, which rests in a substantial iron hanger with a perching ring (yes, metal ring, but powder-coated with red paint).  The hummingbirds love this simple feeder and no issues with their feet getting “stuck.”  Not a style typically seen in a lot of stores (the WS Nursery did carry them Christmas before last), but available online, e.g. Amazon.   I am trying to move away from plastic to glass, but do still have an old plastic one I use, too.  (I have four hummingbird feeders outside at present; 3 are all glass except for metal hanger/hooks.)

  • Mike February 9, 2019 (1:01 pm)

I really want the people with ATV’s to stop tearing down our alley way.  There are kids and people walking dogs down our alley, it’s not the ATV park and I have to pay to fix the damage.

    • Lynn February 9, 2019 (4:45 pm)

Agree. They were also tearing around Admiral at 1.a.m. last night, setting off car alarms. Nuisance. And inconsiderate.

  • Hmm February 9, 2019 (1:03 pm)

I just landed at Seatac and need to make it home to 49th Ave SW & Juneau (down the Erskeine  Hill from Uptown Espresso on CA Ave). I have my car (not AWD) at airport. Any suggestions on the safest way to get home and if I should take alternate transportation? Thanks!

    • aa February 9, 2019 (1:28 pm)

Hopefully you’ve received helpful suggestions by now.  It looks like the highways are clear.   There are probably some WS street/intersection camera shots here on the blog that give a better picture of the local streets.  Would you be able to drive to California and walk the rest of the way?  At least that way your car will be in WS.

    • J February 9, 2019 (2:15 pm)

      Erskine and 49th are plowed.

    The fallen branch on Hanford.

  • Trickycoolj February 9, 2019 (1:45 pm)

Props to Engine 37! They’ve been responding to a bunch of calls in High Point which already has tricky tight streets but added snow and sunken tree branches and they’re still weaving that Engine through as nimble as ever!

  • D Del Rio February 9, 2019 (1:51 pm)

I am on the shuttle bus that is replacing the C line south of the Junction. Main arterials are smooth sailing! Shuttle will drop you off on the Junction to connect to the C Line! Outside of the city limits, a lot of roads are not cleared and sanded.

  • AMD February 9, 2019 (2:03 pm)

We still have power, but the snow-laden tree across the street is terrifying.  It’s not usually on the power lines.

  • Jonathan February 9, 2019 (2:29 pm)

  • Michael Waldo February 9, 2019 (2:33 pm)

Please try to remember some folks are elderly, disabled, homebound, in hospice and so on. They might not be able to clear their sidewalks.

    • Anne February 9, 2019 (4:05 pm)

As a 70 year old I sometimes find it much easier to walk in snow than on an ice slick left after shoveling.

      • whatup February 9, 2019 (4:51 pm)

After having 1 hip replaced I prefer to walk in the snow also.

        • AMD February 9, 2019 (8:01 pm)

If you shovel later morning or mid-day when the sun is out and follow your shoveling with a sprinkle of salt or de-icer (as the city recommends), any residual snow from shoveling melts off pretty quickly and the sidewalks are clear, not icy.  I know Seattleites are newbies to clearing sidewalks, but there is an actual right way to do it, and when you do it the right way, it’s way better than making people walk through the snow.

      • aa February 9, 2019 (6:31 pm)

I am not 70 and I also prefer walking on snow rather than the icy remains of shoveling.  In my opinion, if you want to do something nice for a neighbor, friend or relative who lives by themselves, how about giving them a call?  Ask them if they need help with anything.  Or if they are close by see if they want company, or invite them over for coffee/to share a meal?

    • KM February 9, 2019 (4:13 pm)

You bet—also might not have the right gear or tools to be out there, or had to work, or aren’t home.

      • uncle loco February 9, 2019 (4:56 pm)

MJ must be a snow shovel salesperson.

  • Mj February 9, 2019 (2:56 pm)

Michael sure but I do not think that applies to the vast majority of sidewalks not cleared.

Does it appear that the grocery stores QFC in the junction and safeway are restocked

    • Pigeon Point February 9, 2019 (6:21 pm)

Safeway in the junction was restocked for the most part. Trader Joe’s is also restocked!

  • Lynn February 9, 2019 (4:43 pm)

Sledding and snowboarding at Hamilton Park around 1 pm today. So fun!

  • valvashon February 9, 2019 (4:46 pm)

Why isn’t my sidewalk completely cleared?  Because I discovered this morning that somebody else has my snow shovel.  Who, I don’t know and I don’t think they are bringing it back anytime soon.  As far as I can tell it disappeared over the summer sometime.  So you’re welcome.

  • Pdxmark77 February 9, 2019 (4:47 pm)

Just got an email that the QFC near the junction will be closing at 7 tonight and reopening tomorrow at 8am

    • WSB February 9, 2019 (5:07 pm)

Thanks! Someone sent a photo of sign on the QFC door so I’m adding to the businesses list. Sunday info welcome too, also for canceled church services etc. (separate list) …

      • Mark Tiedemann February 9, 2019 (5:15 pm)

It’s all the QFC’s that are closing early tonight

  • Miss Jan February 9, 2019 (4:53 pm)

Even though I now live in another state (poor decision) I love visiting the West Seattle Blog and reading up on my old neighborhoods. Grew up on 47th & Alaska just down from the WS Junction, went to Genesee Hill Elementary which I guess is no longer in existence. Lincoln Park every single saturday rain or shine! I remember big snowfalls in the 1950’s when I lived there – seemed like we had more frequent then and with more snow too – long, long icicles hanging from the roofline. Recall some of the WS car dealerships using “search lights” even when snow was falling , quite a light show reflecting off clouds and snow, which to a kid seemed magical. First cross country skier that I ever saw was on Alki Beach, my dad said it was very unusual for there to be snow on the sand due to the salt but there it was.  I sure hope someday to move back to Seattle area in general and WS in particular but Seattle is so expensive it might not be anytime soon. The best days are SNOW days!

  • Kathy February 9, 2019 (5:00 pm)

Not naming any names, but I know someone who has his suet feeder wired so that if a flock of starlings arrives, he can use his cell phone to send a shock to the perch. It was so cold and snowy today he relented and let the starlings be.I’m a little concerned about our pair of backyard chickens with the temps predicted in the low teens tonight. They normally sleep on top of the coop and refuse to go inside it, but the last two days they have made friends with each other and are snuggling together inside. In the morning and just before bedtime I have been giving them warm cooked oatmeal with sour cream and cranberries for extra energy.

    • HJH February 9, 2019 (6:14 pm)

Chickens are extremely cold-weather resistant. Heat is much more dangerous for them. Check out Fresh Eggs Daily, a blog by a woman who keeps chickens in Maine. Here is an entry that explains the dangers of heating your coop: https://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2012/01/to-heat-or-not-to-heat.html.    Warm oatmeal is great for them! I bet they love it. Make sure also to give them extra protein in the winter.

    • Karen February 9, 2019 (7:55 pm)

I’ve filled a couple of water bottles with warm water for a little heat in the coop.  Plus a couple of handwarners in socks.  I also have ducks that don’t perch.  I don’t want their feet to get frost bite!  My husband points out that they have down coats and I might be a bit over the top.  I point out that he can zip his lip!

  • Michael Waldo February 9, 2019 (5:21 pm)

For the chickens; heating pad? Even a light bulb, if you have an old school one would give some heat.

  • Mj February 9, 2019 (5:48 pm)

Any word on mail delivery?  The slogan I remember is that the mail delivery happens regardless of weather conditions.

    • WSB February 9, 2019 (5:55 pm)

Yes, the USPS was out. See the photo above as just one example.

  • anonyme February 9, 2019 (6:34 pm)

I saw a mail truck try (and fail) to get up 102nd before 7 am.  Speaking of 102nd, PLEASE do not try to drive west on 102nd beyond 35th.  The grade there is much steeper than most people realize and has now turned to sheer ice.  Earlier today, vehicles were being abandoned at the intersection, unable to make the grade.  Others are spinning, driving on the sidewalk, and using trees as bumper cars.  Damaging property and/or potentially killing someone is not macho; it’s STUPIDO.  Stay home.

  • patt February 9, 2019 (6:41 pm)

I remember a few snowy times in Seattle, but when my mom said the snowdrift were up to the eaves in 1950 she wasn’t kidding

Some shots from Alki and Schmitz Park tonight…

    • Mike February 10, 2019 (6:04 am)

Great photos.  People, please be aware that branches are falling and Schmitz Park is full of big trees that can and are dropping big limbs.  It’s pretty in the park, but be aware some of these branches that are falling are pretty big and can crush you like a grape.

  • jenjm82 February 9, 2019 (6:51 pm)

For anyone wondering, Morgan thriftway has plenty of food, even if it is terribly overpriced.

  • Keri February 9, 2019 (6:54 pm)

For as much as Seattle-ites are terrified of the snow- Long grocery store lines, empty shelves, mass evacuation from work and school at first snowfall… they sure know how to embrace and celebrate it – kids sledding down steep streets, cross country skiers on the beach, snowmen at every house, business and street corner and…  sometimes I think there are more people out on the street on a day like today than in the middle of summer. Seattle’s best comes out in a day like today.

  • Deb February 9, 2019 (7:55 pm)

I agree Keri – I too saw lots of neighbors out today both on the street and in the alley. Roving sidewalk shovelers too!And then the SUN came out! Bonus!
