5:55 PM: Westside School will start at (corrected) 10:15 am Tuesday.

6:03 AM: Not related to the weather but many are asking, so – the TV helicopters over White Center are there because King County Sheriff’s Office deputies are trying to talk a domestic-violence suspect out of the Subway shop near 16th SW and SW 104th – we have updates on White Center Now.

6:46 PM: Here’s the West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) current plan for Tuesday, from executive director Shalimar Gonzales:

Due to the freezing temperatures and driving conditions, we will delay our opening to 10am on Tuesday, February 5th at both West Seattle and Fauntleroy location. Below are some additional updates that may impact people’s visit to the Y:

All morning swim lessons are cancelled
Group Exercise classes will start at 11 am
WS Kids Corner will operate with limited staffing, Fauntleroy Kids Corner will be closed

7:29 PM: Be careful outside tonight, whether walking, driving, riding – multiple reports of VERY icy streets and walkways. … Also just hearing scanner traffic about police blocking all lanes at Delridge and Spokane, though we didn’t hear why.

Comcast is out in Admiral and Alki. Their outage map indicates that between 500 and 1000 customers are affected. The listed time for service to be restored is 6 pm. Cheers.

How’s Admiral Way from California Ave down to 63rd?  Icy or dry?

    • Patsy February 4, 2019 (4:54 pm)

      It’s relatively dry. No problems.

    • Bill February 4, 2019 (5:00 pm)

      Clear and dry just now.

  • Julie February 4, 2019 (3:48 pm)

There is a tree that came down two hours ago at SW Orchard and Dumar Way SW. Took out power lines near my house and no sign of Seattle City Light. It is too cold to be without power all night…

  • MJ February 4, 2019 (4:02 pm)

It feels cold, wow I could not even imagine the real cold people endured in the Midwest recently!

  • Petert February 4, 2019 (4:19 pm)

Is trash collection cancelled for today or just postponed to later in the week ? Thanks !

    • WSB February 4, 2019 (4:33 pm)

Postponed a day. SPU’s update, which I’ll link again in this story, says the rest of the week will slide a day for everybody.

  • anonymous February 4, 2019 (4:26 pm)

will private schools like hope lutheran/seattle lutheran be delayed/ cancelled?

    • WSB February 4, 2019 (4:32 pm)

The SPS announcement is the only one we’ve received so far. Anything else that we get, we’ll add here, plus on the school-info page we launched this morning.

  • hbb February 4, 2019 (4:39 pm)

The conditions for the Water Taxi appear to have actually improved quite a bit from this morning, I am sort of surprised they are suspending service.

    • Hbb February 4, 2019 (6:17 pm)

Ugh. No 37 bus today, so with no Water Taxi, there’s not a viable transit option for me.

  • NH February 4, 2019 (4:45 pm)

    4:54 56, 5:31 56, 4:15 57, 4:22 55 cancelled so far tonight.

  • HRS Parent February 4, 2019 (4:46 pm)

Holy Rosary is now a 2 hr late start tomorrow. Just got the text/email from the school.

  • Jessica February 4, 2019 (4:56 pm)

Highline just came through with the two hour delay for Tuesday!

  • newnative February 4, 2019 (5:02 pm)

I work in Lower Queen Anne and have received a slew of text alerts that the 55, 56 and 57s aren’t running. I hope they will when I want to get home in about an hour.

  • West Seattle Hipster February 4, 2019 (5:05 pm)

I can’t believe that some people continue to drive at or above the speed limit on icy roads.  I was driving up I-5 around 3pm and I could not believe how fast some of the AWM’s were driving.  Slow down……..

    • Jim February 4, 2019 (10:36 pm)

Umm, that sounds like me. My usual 65-70 was a good clip for the drive home today at 2:00 pm (northbound on I-5 from Kent to the WS bridge). All’s well, don’t worry.

  • Sam-c February 4, 2019 (5:28 pm)

Any idea on the reason for the helicopter above white center?

  • Trickycoolj February 4, 2019 (5:29 pm)

Any info on Impact Property Services garbage/recycle schedule this week? (High Point is not part of Seattle Public Utilities for waste/recycle)

  • Taxi rider February 4, 2019 (5:33 pm)

I was on the 9:25 water taxi sailing this morning. It was a bouncy sailing. Amazing job by the crew.

  • Jamie February 4, 2019 (5:35 pm)

Be safe out there everyone. Please stay off roads unless it’s an ER. There are multiple abandoned cars mid hill sideways in road on 30th near Findlay that couldn’t make it up that hill. I saw multiple cars trying to head down that hill towards Brandon instead, unsuccessfully. Snow closure signs are on this hill for a reason (and 29th adjacent is always even worse, don’t try it).  Stay safe!!!

    • daniel.rosalesg@gmail.com February 4, 2019 (6:30 pm)

I did not see any Closing signs … it is very bad … don’t attempt to go down hill here . I was one of the drivers to leave my car between Brandon and Findlay. I hope Sdot treats this street soon or before the morning commute otherwise car can keep sliding

      • Trickycoolj February 4, 2019 (7:18 pm)

That’s not an arterial or noted on any snow routes/treatment maps.  Sylvan way was well treated morning an evening commute.

      • Jamie February 4, 2019 (8:07 pm)

I have lived right in this area last 6 years, this hill has always had snow closure signs out (in fact one was up at bottom of hill last night when we returned from airport very late), has never been treated, routinely has multiple car crashes from abandoned cars on hill then other cars sliding into them down the hill, and into people’s property, even with tow trucks getting stuck. It’s a very bad scene, we are home bound/Carless here for foreseeable future.

    • SJ February 4, 2019 (8:57 pm)

I was just coming on here to warn everyone  NOT to use 30th between Brandon and Juneau. It is pure ice. We live at the steepest point of the hill and lost our mailbox to someone trying to take the hill. It will NOTbe better in the morning and there is no road closed sign up.

  • psps February 4, 2019 (5:46 pm)

It seems Seattle is back to the “no salt on the roads” rule.

    • WSB February 4, 2019 (5:49 pm)

No, the roads WERE treated – arterials, anyway; side streets are not. A salt, magnesium chloride, according to one exchange I saw.

One example of many I encountered today: Oregon has had no such treatment between California and Fauntleroy.

  • Georgia February 4, 2019 (6:51 pm)

Is there any chance that school would be closed for tuesday?

    • WSB February 4, 2019 (7:08 pm)

Could be, which is why we are framing all this as tentative. Last night there were a few schools/districts that announced delayed start, then changed to full closure. We’re not expecting more snow by morning BUT the cold temps and icy roads are certainly a hazard. Generally, the districts evaluate conditions early in the morning to make a final decision – TR

  • Lynn February 4, 2019 (7:08 pm)

Has anyone been down 49th Ave Sw between Admiral Way and Spokane? Have the snow plows been that way at all?

  • Brian Lee February 4, 2019 (7:20 pm)

Be very careful of Othello between California and Fauntleroy. It is a sheet of ice. I could not stop nor turn and nearly hit a pole. Don’t they usually close that when it snows?

    • WSB February 4, 2019 (7:27 pm)

Someone just texted to say the same thing about Myrtle west of 35th.

  • Mj February 4, 2019 (7:34 pm)

Homeowners and business owners need to get their act together and clear their sidewalks as required by SMC.

  • Brian Lee February 4, 2019 (7:39 pm)

Othello between California and Fauntleroy is a sheet of ice. It should be closed. I couldn’t stop nor turn.

  • WSobserver February 4, 2019 (7:44 pm)

Looking outside from the warm comforts of home, I can see an icy glaze on all the snow that’s left on the sidewalks and pavement.Beware, it may look like white snow but it’s ice now. Extremely decieving and slippery.

  • WSeattle February 4, 2019 (9:33 pm)

Off the peninsula, but Bishop Blanchet and O’Dea have cancelled classes for tomorrow due to unsafe road conditions.

    • Tony February 4, 2019 (10:07 pm)

      Hamlin Robinson School as well…..

  • Q February 4, 2019 (9:52 pm)

Tried getting on a C bus to get from Alaska Junction to Fauntleroy Ferry this evening, but when the C arrived at the Junction, the driver said the bus was going out of service. I decided to walk, but as I walked I saw a bus marked “West Seattle Junction to Fauntleroy Ferry shuttle.” Does anybody know where I can find out about the schedule and pickup locations for this for tomorrow? I looked on the Seattle Metro page (including the alerts page) and couldn’t find anything.

  • Caitlin February 4, 2019 (9:52 pm)

South Seattle College — classes prior to 11AM cancelled.

  • Hate the Snow February 4, 2019 (10:37 pm)

Does anyone know if route 131 is going down Highland Park or if it’s on snow route through Olson Place?

  • K February 5, 2019 (4:28 am)

SPS is now closed for Tuesday.

Sorry, comment time is over.
