TRANSIT/TRAFFIC/WEATHER/MORE: Tuesday AM info

(TUESDAY SCHOOL INFO: Closures/changes are ALL LISTED HERE)

5:31 AM: Good morning. 18 degrees! Again today, schools are changing their mind and closing rather than delaying – that info is all here.

West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCAopening at 10 am
Little Gym of West Seattle – closed
West Seattle Tool Library – closed

6:15 AM: No new weather advisories for that next POSSIBLE snow blast, but the Weather Service says its timing is more like Friday/Saturday. Meanwhile, this morning remains icy, very cold, and Metro overall warns “All routes are experiencing significant delays this morning.” Side streets are downright crunchy, per what we’ve heard so far. If you have to head out, please take everything slowly and cautiously.

7:36 AM: As the cameras show, traffic is very light. No incidents; we continue monitoring in a variety of ways. Much discussion about side streets – city policy has long been to treat/plow arterials, and this brochure shows which streets are priorities.

11:13 AM: We are headed off-peninsula for the first time in a few days and so far, it’s smooth going – California and Fauntleroy to the bridge, and then the bridge, ice and snow free. Shoulders and side streets, of course, a different story.

Icy on the side streets but WS bridge and main streets are good, considering.  people driving way to fast, so be careful.  Notice stop signs don’t mean much.  commute time just a few minutes longer.be safe out there

    • Sam-c February 5, 2019 (7:29 am)

Yeah, i don’t understand the deal with people ignoring stop signs, either. Seems like a recipe for a collision.

    • Sam-c February 5, 2019 (7:33 am)

I can understand not wanting to stop if you are headed uphill on an icy street, but i saw someone blow through a stop sign at a flat, not very icy intersection.

  • Lisa February 5, 2019 (6:33 am)

Does anyone know how the sidewalks are downtown? Thanks!

    • Megan February 5, 2019 (6:55 am)

Sidewalks in SLU are pretty clear, I couldn’t see any others as we were going down 3rd, because the windows were too foggy.

    • R February 5, 2019 (6:56 am)

Yesterday they were pretty much melted clean.

    • JCW February 5, 2019 (6:59 am)

I’m on 3rd and they’re looking good. Dry and cleaned off, with a few patches that look like were missed by business owners.

    • Paul February 5, 2019 (7:03 am)

Sidewalks in Pioneer Square are pretty good this morning

  • Paul February 5, 2019 (6:34 am)

If you are heading south, Ambaum is pretty icy this morning.

    • WSB February 5, 2019 (6:48 am)

Thanks for that – someone has actually asked us that in a social-media DM and the best I could do at the time was point her to the southernmost King County camera (16th/116th).

  • Teresa February 5, 2019 (6:50 am)

Does anyone know if the C line or 21 from Barton and 35th is running?

    • East Coast Cynic February 5, 2019 (8:53 am)

Rapid Ride and the 21’s are running, not on time, but running.   Waited about 50 minutes to get a 21X at 35th and Holly after a 21 local that arrived at about 7:35am was too full to pick anybody up.

    • Hadlie February 5, 2019 (9:40 am)

Yes C- line running as a shuttle (green bus) w chains from Westwood village up to Alaska junction. Then transfer to regular C which ran this morning on the low bridge. Hope they do better this afternoon. 3 empty C lines sitting at junction. Jammed 50 waiting cold people finally into one. Operators didn’t appear to know what was going on. Ran up 4th rather than usual busway (which yesterday hadn’t been plowed and may be the reason they weren’t using today)

  • Beth February 5, 2019 (7:09 am)

I got on a 57 at 7:01 that headed north on California from the junction and turned right (east) on admiral to pick up riders at the stops between California and the bridge.  Another rider said this route isn’t serving the stops west of California.

    • newnative February 5, 2019 (7:34 am)

That’s frustrating to hear because i got a Metro alert stating those buses wouldn’t run. I took an alternate that is longer.

    • Laura February 5, 2019 (7:59 am)

Nope, the snow route for the 57 goes north on California. Which is kind of ridiculous as a snow route for people who live blocks and blocks away from California. I normally catch it at 55th and Genessee and am very, VERY grateful I can work from home rather than trying to get up to California.

      • Lynn February 5, 2019 (8:17 am)

Agree. Its too bad the 57 snow route won’t go along 49th. Its already going down Admiral Way.

  • West Seattle Hipster February 5, 2019 (7:11 am)

This can’t be emphasized enough:Please Slow Down

  • Taz February 5, 2019 (7:16 am)

Any idea how Columbia Way headed towards Rainier is?

  • Sara February 5, 2019 (7:20 am)

Does anyone know if the water taxi shuttle busses are running this morning?

  • newnative February 5, 2019 (7:23 am)

Caught the 55 out of Admiral District as all of my 56/57 were cancelled. Very grateful.

    • NH February 5, 2019 (9:45 am)

A 56 was there around 7:10 or so, I was happily surprised and grateful!

      • newnative February 5, 2019 (11:51 am)

that’s crazy, yesterday we stood out there waiting for buses that never came. Today they tell us they weren’t coming but they did come by. Oh well, I still made it in on the “scenic route”.

  • Trickycoolj February 5, 2019 (7:27 am)

Please remove the snow and ice from the top of your cars! https://twitter.com/wsdot_sw/status/1092791523706433537?s=21

  • Jane February 5, 2019 (7:29 am)

Anyone know how Highland Park Way hill is?

  • RandomGeek February 5, 2019 (7:35 am)

Did the West Seattle to Redmond drive this morning at 6:15a. Roads are still spotty, in particular the 405-520 exchange. And once you get off the freeways any form of side street (even around the Microsoft campus) is going to be touch and go. I’d absolutely suggest working from home if you can (I wish I had done that instead of driving in).

  • notmyfault_Im_local February 5, 2019 (7:44 am)

Sounds like Admiral to the tunnel to SLU should be a-ok for a bad-Seattle-driver (i.e. me)?

  • ElnoraH February 5, 2019 (7:45 am)

125 bus route to downtown, operating on snow route, came on time on 16th in Highland Park, and was a quick trip to downtown at 6:35 AM, since the snow route has no stops on Delridge until it reaches the usual stops closer to the bridge.  Traffic downtown was also light. Streets and sidewalks downtown, including hills, looked quite clear, and salted.   Does anyone know what the best street is to get from 16th Ave SW over to 35th Ave SW this evening? I have an appointment that I need to drive to, and usually would drive on Trenton or Thistle, but those hills are quite large and not sure if those streets are clear or icy.  Maybe Henderson instead, or Roxbury even?

  • JG February 5, 2019 (7:58 am)

That’s interesting about garbage service not happening today. There was a garbage truck heading down my street this morning. 28th & Dakota St SW

    • LyndaB February 5, 2019 (10:49 am)

I received an Alert Seattle text informing utilities customers to place their waste out a day after their normal pickup day.

      • WSB February 5, 2019 (10:51 am)

We included the SPU info link above a few hours before their phone call. Monday customers are sliding to next week. Everybody else – as of now, anyway – slides a day.

        • trickycoolj February 5, 2019 (12:58 pm)

Still don’t understand if Impact Property Services is doing recycling today at High Point.  Can’t get a hold of anyone.  Put the bin out anyway, if it sits for the next 3 weeks so be it.

          • WSB February 5, 2019 (1:22 pm)

Sorry, I don’t have any info on that. There was a tweet about Recology but nothing I’ve seen about other providers.

  • Julia February 5, 2019 (8:05 am)

If you search “Seattle storm response map” you can see which roads have been sanded and how recently.

    • WSB February 5, 2019 (8:19 am)

You don’t have to search for it. It’s linked in our story above and was yesterday too.

      • Julia February 5, 2019 (10:21 am)

Sorry, saw that too late. Of course, you’re on top of everything!

  • herongrrrl February 5, 2019 (8:11 am)

Any word on the how the Water Taxi Shuttles are doing?

  • Mnw February 5, 2019 (8:30 am)

Sidewalks around c line bus stop in Morgan Junction are covered in packed snow which is now a sheet of ice. I actually think it would have been safer for me to drive downtown! The sidewalks near Zeeks also had a ton of ice. As a homeowner I made sure to clear my sidewalk for others, you would think businesses and king county metro would do the same!

    • Railroaded February 5, 2019 (9:03 am)

KC Metro has one heckuva lot of bus stops….

    • T February 5, 2019 (2:34 pm)

MNW – I agree. No excuses. Business and home owners should also clean up trash and degraded vegetation on planting strips and curbs/storm drains. All of that seems to be too much for people on California Ave. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

  • Paige February 5, 2019 (8:35 am)

Water taxi and 775 shuttle on time. Seacrest de-iced. Easy breezy.

  • Seattlelite February 5, 2019 (8:48 am)

How are the conditions on Marine View Drive and Fauntleroy way heading south? Particularly the hill past Endolyne Joe’s towards Arroyo Heights is it icy?

    • sam-c February 5, 2019 (9:29 am)

The SDOT response map shows that has been treated in the last 12 hours, only south to 100th though.  Haven’t driven it to see for myself.

  • Amanda February 5, 2019 (9:11 am)

FYI the c line headed to downtown is picking up along Avalon and Fauntleroy only ( avoiding the 35th hill). We were picked up next to shell on Fauntleroy side and next stop was along Avalon in front of old kfc. They made the normal Yancy & Avalon stop but it was packed by then

  • Franci February 5, 2019 (9:54 am)

I’m quite surprised at the number of people who are willing to tailgate in this weather.  I drive an all-wheel drive vehicle, I know that this means NOTHING on ice.  When I’m driving down California Ave and know I’ll be turning onto a side street or parking lot entrance, I must assume that it will be icy and slick and so yes I am driving slower than you might like in these conditions.  Back off and give your fellow driver some room to negotiate these slick streets.

  • Beth J February 5, 2019 (10:17 am)

Anyone know how the roads are on 35th, Thistle and Gatewood South California Hill?

    • WSB February 5, 2019 (10:46 am)

We’re on that hill and it was fine yesterday – designated city treatment route. We’re about to head out so I’ll have an update above shortly!

  • MJ February 5, 2019 (11:19 am)

What is a person supposed to do when SPU fails to pick up?  All my bins are full!  Food yard waste what can be used for extra items without leaving your residense or paying for anything?  I live on a level street next to an arterial and feel SPU has no excuse not to pick up.  And recycling waiting two weeks is not acceptable.

    • Railroaded February 5, 2019 (12:17 pm)

I always called SPU when they failed to pick up. It was picked up the next day.

    • Julia February 5, 2019 (12:34 pm)

Drivers have to be able to get to the trucks, to begin with. And the trucks have to get up into West Seattle and back down.

    • rpo February 5, 2019 (1:34 pm)

As has been reported on here extensively, they did not pick up yesterday or today if your normal pick up day is Monday. SPU will be picking for Monday customers next Monday including recycling.

  • Luis February 5, 2019 (1:05 pm)

Is Admiral Way clear all the way up and down to Alki?

    • rpo February 5, 2019 (1:35 pm)

      Yes.

  • Gene February 5, 2019 (1:10 pm)

What Julia said- Our garbage & recycle is piling up too-but  I’m for cutting SPU, newspaper delivery, heck even USPS some slack. Think about the drivers that may have to navigate slick side streets to get to the arterial. It’s barely been 24 hours since the snow stopped falling & icing over. Just don’t get the lack of patience & understanding in this unusual ( for Seattle) circumstance.I can see just down the block from me that Morgan St is pretty clear & dry- but our car is parked in the alley behind our house- which is totally iced up- very little sun hits it -has steep exits on both ends-freedom so close but so far away-It will be tomorrow before we get out.

  • Deb February 5, 2019 (4:38 pm)

At 9:50am, in Morgan Junction, the next bus sign for the  Rapid Ride C line went from 2 minutes to 26 minutes. Then it stayed at 26 minutes while other bus arrivals counted down. One Bus Away had the same grim news.   Then we see four empty Rapid Ride buses heading south on California bound for Westwood.  Eventually, a #22 shows up and takes all the  frozen C line passengers to the Alaska Junction. so we can wait with other frozen people.. There are rumors of a C line snow route but no one knew where that route is. Rumors of empty C buses sitting on a Junction side street. To add insult to injury, we see 4 more empty Rapid Ride buses head south, but nothing was heading downtown. Then a 50 arrives. Cold pedestrians pack on  and head off the peninsula. The adventure continued on the busway  as West Seattleites run for trains that don’t wait, (the nerve!!) and snow ball fights break out accross the train track.  It’s a first trip on the light rail for many folks, and we never figured out that payment thing. Arrived downtown at 11:00. The End

  • Mj February 5, 2019 (4:57 pm)

How fortunate the region was with good weather during the SR 99 closure!

  • onion February 5, 2019 (5:52 pm)

Regarding garbage pickup. I’m betting that people who were scheduled for a Monday recycling pickup will be punted from the Monday Feb. 10 schedule and told to hold onto their recycling until the 17th.  Not so easy to do at this time of year when we have minimal yard/compost and regular waste, but always seem to top out our recycling dumpster every two weeks.

  • Mj February 5, 2019 (6:56 pm)

Onion I hope you are wrong regarding recycling, just walking the neighborhood today many bins are out with extra card board boxes on the side.  Rain and card board is not good.  It is the SPU that is responsible for this.  They chose not to pick up today even though most streets in WS were easily drivable.  They could simply have picked everything up Wednesday with all pick ups 2 days late.  What if more snow hits the region later this week?

Sorry, comment time is over.
