You have made so many children happy with this news. It’s as if all the Who’s in Whoville sang in unison.

The flip side of the fun now is that these days will have to be made up, and probably in June when families already have summer plans. That means savvy parents will call in and say their kids are “sick” ending their kids’ school year on or around the time it was scheduled to end.  Teachers and other school staff will be left going for however many days we end up having to make up.  So yes, the kids may de delighted today with another day of freedom but nothing is truly free as parents needing childcare understand or teachers desperately awaiting the last school day’s bell know.

Teacher here, (not feeling scroogelike at all)… Yes, there may be some inconveniences; but also, Woo Hoo! Unexpected, simple joy! :-)

Out of the mouths of the affluent – summer plans already scheduled. Ending their kid’s school year early. Must be tough. SNOW DAY!

  • Gene February 5, 2019 (6:56 am)

Oh for Pete’s sake-Scrooge – glass half  empty much?

  • Stuart February 5, 2019 (6:57 am)

Teacher here- many schools build in extra snow days into the year- long school calendar – so we make these two days up in March and May. ( if there had been no snow –these days would be converted into long weekends !) No need to extend the school year into June until we get to a third snow day closure.

    • Teacher too February 5, 2019 (7:18 am)

Hey Stuart,Seattle’s only built in snow day was last week’s day between semesters. Everyone had the day off. If we had a snow day before then, we would have used that day as a make up day. Anyehoo, we will be making these days up at the end of the year. We were supposed to get out of school Thursday and now our last day will be Monday. That’s going to be fun! There are zero make up days left.

If they’re closed, of course. No one has contacted us, yesterday or today, and I checked their website yesterday but found no status info.

Seattle U refusing to buckle, 10:00 start today.

  • L February 5, 2019 (8:11 am)

Roads look totally fine to me, this is quite ridiculous that Seattle can’t deal with normal winter weather…

    • Play it safe February 5, 2019 (8:33 am)

Backroads are probably not plowed and are icy. Sidewalks are not shoveled and are icy. The last thing we want is a kid walking to school to get hit by a car or have a bad fall. I’d rather play it safe.

    • WyoGal February 5, 2019 (9:17 am)

L – First time this happened after moving here several years ago. I too thought “What is wrong with these people?” I hopped in my car and took off. A few blocks later I knew: hills, hills, and no snow tires.

    • Gene February 5, 2019 (9:42 am)

Maybe the roads are totally fine where you are- but not in my neighborhood- as Play it Safe noted- many side streets & sidewalks are still sheets of ice- dangerous for walking, driving by car or bus. Most don’t live on an arterial & a LOT of us live on hills that don’t get sanded. FYI-I don’t consider snow combined with below freezing temps “ normal winter weather” for Seattle.

    • Sukie February 5, 2019 (9:45 am)

L, perhaps this article from Cliff Mass will give you perspective: https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2019/02/post-snowstorm-ice-winter-scourge-of.html?m=1

  • Mmarie February 5, 2019 (8:58 am)

Anyone know if West Seattle y is open? I called but can’t get a human…

    • WSB February 5, 2019 (10:48 am)

We published that in our main story. They were scheduled to open at 10 am.

  • Living Man February 5, 2019 (9:24 am)

We have just received an alert from the CDC stating that there has been a case of the Negative Nancy syndrome going around. If you have not been vaccinated now would be a great time to do so. And for those of whom are easily distracted or experiencing a case of the icky life sucks symptoms please be considerate when sharing your thoughts. As we all know just how contagious negativity can be.YOLO
