FIRST REPORT, 6:38 PM SATURDAY: Just over at Sammamish High School – a slowdown offense did not serve the West Seattle High School boys well in their district-semifinal match against Ingraham, which took the victory, 57-46. The WSHS boys play again here at 11:45 am (correction) Monday, vs. either O’Dea or Rainier Beach. More later.

ADDED EARLY SUNDAY: A frenetic, strange start for this game, before it moved to a pace so slow that the halftime score was only 18-17 (West Seattle with that one-point edge).

West Seattle’s Abdullahi Mohamed hung off the rim in a failed dunk bid, and that led to a technical foul. Ingraham failed to convert its two shots. Then one of its players tried something similar; no T that time. All this before the start of scoring – West Seattle’s Roman Barnet with a three-pointer.

#22 Nuh’Kosi Roberson had an underhand assist on that and shortly afterward added a bucket to extend the WSHS lead to 5-0, with another before mid-quarter. Ingraham’s shooting was fairly chilly and they had only 6 points by the end of the 1st quarter.

West Seattle opened an eight-point lead at the start of the second quarter, but the momentum then started to shift, especially with a couple of threes by Ingraham. At midquarter the Rams were only two back, and WSHS head coach Keffrey Fazio called time.

After that, Ingraham moved ahead on yet anther three, 15-14. Two foul shots and a basket put WSHS on top by the half.

Starting the second half, neither team managed to pull away. But by the second half of the third quarter, the Rams got the upper hand, and built a nine-point advantage going into the final quarter. The slow pass-around offense that WSHS continued to deploy didn’t allow for quickly making up ground, and that was compounded by Ingraham switching to a traditional time-killing style of play. The Wildcats got as close as four points back but couldn’t get any closer, and Ingraham was even up by 11 before arriving at the 9-point victory margin.

With O’Dea losing the other semifinal, they’ll face WSHS at midday Monday for third place.

LEADING SCORERS: For WSHS, Barnet had 16, Mohamed 15, Roberson 14.
