UPDATE: Driver jailed after crash in Fauntleroy

10:29 PM: This damaged car was the last one left at the scene of a crash tonight outside the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse by the time we were able to get there. Our first tipster reported by text:

Hit and run outside of Fauntleroy Hall. Two cars pushed up on curb. Suspect fled with car. Didn’t get far. Ditched it in the Y parking lot and fled on foot. Called the cops.

Another tipster via Twitter reported seeing an arrest in progress when he went by. When we got there, in addition to the car, we found one officer who told us he was on scene awaiting the last tow truck, but he was able to confirm that three vehicles were involved and that one person had been arrested. No SFD callout logged, so apparently no injuries of note.

2:28 AM FRIDAY: Cross-referencing jail and Municipal Court records, we’ve discovered that the driver who was arrested is a 28-year-old woman booked into King County Jail, under investigation for DUI, driving without an ignition interlock, and driving with a suspended license. Records show a prior DUI, from 2014, also in West Seattle.

My understanding is that you won’t get the breathalyzer interlock till your third DUI… But maybe it’s a case to case thing.

That’s not true. Not at all. I’ve met three time offenders and at that point they’re on work release. Spending evenings in a County lockup for several months. Alcohol is addictive. Tough love, abstinence, works sometimes. Not apologizing for this behavior though. With hundreds of thousands of driver’s & the access, it’s a statistical certainty Glad no 3rd party was hurt this time.

I saw this happening from the C Line around 7:40 and came back to meet the person who was calling it in. The Prius had been smashed into two other parked vehicles in front of it.The driver was wandering around alternating between trying to get someone to pick her up or flag anyone down, so we kept talking to her and distracting her from getting back into her car until SPD arrived. Thanks to all my fellow neighbors for helping find the owners of the parked cars and SPD for a quick response!

If she was at a business or someone else’s home they’re liable for letting her drive away drunk. Hopefully the impacted car owners will pursue this and sue.

There is no information about the circumstances of what preceded the driver allegedly being intoxicated behind the wheel, and not likely to be. Given the usual lack of information, I’m surprised enough that the incident number cross-referenced to another online record, enabling me to find out this much.

The driver has a previous DUI, driving without a court ordered ignition lock and a suspended license. Yes, I’m sure this is someone else’s fault besides the driver.

That’s awesome, JCW. Thank you for adding that bit. It’s always great to hear about neighbors pulling together to help one another.

That corner is dangerous. My car was parked right there and was hit and run a few months ago. I’ve got other accident anecdotes about that corner too. It’s a curvy downhill from Barton to the Schoolhouse/Y and impaired/unskilled folks speed too much downhill. SPD could do a radar emphasis patrol on that downhill (maybe even catch a few speeding C lines :) )  if they were interested.

We saw this very drunk woman (stumbling, slurring) outside the Y a little before 8pm stopping cars in the street and asking people for rides to the junction. Didn’t see the smashed cars though. We circled back around to see if she needed help and saw a couple people already talking to her. Crazy!

I grew up on 40th sw and sw Barton where there is a little jog out right at  40th and cars used to drive straight into the telephone all the time. And that’s a few blocks before the actual curve.

As a recipient of a DUI, I don’t understand how someone can reoffend now that Lyft & Uber make drunk driving a conscious choice.  Bad move…

Sorry, comment time is over.
