West Seattle shores: 2018 ‘king tides’ on the way

(January 2013 “king tide” effects at Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza)

Shore-watchers will note the highest daytime high tides of the year start in just a few days: Monday morning at 7:39 am, 12.4 feet; same thing Tuesday at 8:32 am, as the “king tide” time of year begins. Christmas and the day after will bring 13-foot high tides, and the highest tide of winter is due on January 23-24, 13.1 feet. These tides are not usually a problem unless accompanied by seriously stormy weather; Monday looks to be rainy and breezy, but not predicted to hit alert levels, so far.

King tides aren’t an issue unless there is moderate/strong offshore flow (NNW wind) and this usually occurs at least 3-4 times a year from late autumn to mid winter.

Have you seen rats playing by the Alki bathhouse lawn? They come out actually play making a little sound when they play. I was hoping the tide is really high and wipe them out. The tail is long and I don’t like em!..!

In just a few years (well, decades) it will be just like the picture at regular high-tide. Those houses at the end of the beach there will be really cheap then!

Thank you for the photo! Nothing calamitous but if it had been stormy … We’ll keep watch for next month’s 13-foot high tides!

The rat population has really grown in the planting beds. I reported it to parks and rev you should too!

Sorry, comment time is over.
