About the sea-lion carcass afloat off Alki today

The photo is from Deidre, one of a half-dozen people who messaged us about the sea-lion carcass floating off Alki today. We checked with Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network, which confirms this is the most recent of the 13 dead sea lions noted here on Thursday: “Seal Sitters responded yesterday when it rested against the Water Taxi dock. We secured overnight for a visual exam that revealed a suspected gunshot wound. Carcass was too decomposed for necropsy, so we documented with photos and allowed it to drift free.” The most-recent SS update includes numbers for reporting sightings, dead or alive, as well as for contacting investigators with any information on the sea-lion shootings.

FOLLOWUP: Opening day for Lika Love Boutique in The Junction

Fast “facelift,” as Lika Love Boutique proprietor Malika Siddiq described it, for her new flagship store in the West Seattle Junction. It’s opening day, until 8 tonight, at 4547 California SW. This was the longtime home of Terjung’s Studio of Gifts; we learned on their final day in business October 29th that Lika Love was taking over the space. (And keeping the candy counter, though the stock has just started arriving.) The apparel and accessories, however, are here in full force!

Lika Love, which started as a fashion truck, also has shops in Morgan Junction and Queen Anne. P.S. Besides “doorbuster” specials for Black Friday, Lika Love is offering a gift to the first 10 people shopping tomorrow on Small Biz Saturday, and then a “flash sale” for Cyber Monday.

CONTINUING SATURDAY: Duwamish Longhouse’s Native NW Holiday Gift Fair

If you can’t get to the Duwamish Longhouse by 5 today, don’t worry, this is only the first of three days for the season’s first of two Native Northwest Holiday Gift Fairs. Native art is just part of what you’ll see:

That’s from Vashon-based Raven’s Nest. Other participants are selling creations including shoes, drums, jewelry, soaps, purses, cards, and inspirational engravings:

Those are by Kristy Lane Haskey. The fair continues until 5 pm tonight, 10 am-5 pm Saturday and Sunday (then again December 14-15-16) at 4705 W. Marginal Way SW.

SIDE NOTE: Though it’s not part of the fair, you might also notice this over the door between the Longhouse’s exhibit space and event space:

“Real Rent” is a new way to support/compensate the Duwamish Tribe, as explained here.

2:23 PM: Despite intermittent showers, it was a festive morning downtown during the 2018 Macy’s Holiday Parade. We recorded the West Seattle High School Marching Band playing “Let It Snow” as they passed our favorite viewing spot (4th/University, where the parade travels west for a block before heading north). Longer clip (also featuring the Salty’s [WSB sponsor] Nutcrackers, which preceded them) a bit later. (The Chief Sealth International High School Marching Band was in the lineup too but wasn’t able to participate after all.) The hour-long parade, with more than 50 entries, is an annual day-after-Thanksgiving tradition.

ADDED 8:32 PM: Here’s our extended video, starting with the Salty’s Nutcrackers and continuing with the WSHS band:

A few photos too:

This parade is mostly VIP-free, but Police Chief Carmen Best was an exception:

That’s Assistant Chief Adrian Z. Diaz to the chief’s right. The SPD contingent also included (not shown as we didn’t spot him until he was leaving camera range) Southwest Precinct operations commander Lt. Steve Strand.

West Seattle Scout Grace Gunlogson off on journey for Gold Award project

A West Seattle Girl Scout is headed on a big journey today. Grace Gunlogson‘s story, and the photos, are shared by her Troop 40766 leader, Sheryl Guyon:

Grace is a life-long Girl Scout. As a senior at West Seattle High, she wanted to undertake a big project that would have a lasting impact. Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is a big job that requires detailed planning and the determination to manage a big project.

The Friday after Thanksgiving, Grace will leave for Nepal to deliver lap-tops to remote schools in the Everest region. It’s a big undertaking, and not for the faint-of-heart. Grace will travel with her father, Mark Gunlogson, of Mountain Madness fame. Grace’s team includes accomplished hikers from Microsoft, who have generously donated laptops and technology as part of their Global Citizenship initiative.

This will be Grace’s second trek in the Himalayas. On her earlier trip, she saw firsthand the lack of resources in these remote villages. The Sherpas that serve Everest live in villages that are far removed from the cities. The laptops will go to the schools that serve Sherpa families, providing access to education and resources. An additional goal of Grace’s project is cultural preservation. Many children of the Sherpa’s leave their home villages for lack of opportunity. Access to technology will allow locals to create opportunities in their traditional villages.

We’re proud of Grace and her initiative to have a lasting impact halfway across the globe.

UPDATE: Water break in Westwood

11:03 PM: Hard to see on a rainy night, but that puddling on SW Trenton just west of 34th SW isn’t just from the rain. Water is bubbling up from the street because of a break. Thanks to the area residents who tipped us about this; one neighbor said a crew was out flagging gas lines in advance of the repair crew. They were gone before we got there; another neighbor said Seattle Public Utilities told them that work won’t start until morning.

1:10 PM: Work did start this morning and is continuing:

No word hoe much longer. SPU says 20 homes are affected.

West Seattle holidays: Reasons to keep it local as shopping season begins

(WSB photo: In a window at Northwest Art and Frame)

As we’re reminded by the “Charlie Brown Christmas” scene from which that quote was taken, a little love can work magic. Your local independent small businesses can really use your love this holiday season, and many are offering reasons for you to stay right here on the peninsula starting with Black Friday tomorrow, continuing with Small Business Saturday the next day, and on through the season (we’re including “shopping spotlights” in our Holiday Guide as always). You can start Friday as early as 7 am – when Easy Street Records opens for Record Store Day Black Friday, and then at 10 am Lika Love‘s new Junction flagship store (4547 California SW) opens – proprietor Malika Siddiq says, “We are offering door busters, $28, $38 and $48 items!!” Down the street at Thunder Road Guitars (4736 California SW; WSB sponsor), they’re celebrating their 7th anniversary with a Friday and Saturday sale – proprietor Frank Gross says they’re offering “15% off most guitars, amplifiers, and all pedals in stock.” Thunder Road, Easy Street, and Sub Pop Records even teamed up for a promotional video that tells a timeless tale of shopping small and dreaming big:

Tomorrow, we’ll take a closer look at what’s up for Small Biz Saturday – you can get a long list of Junction previews by going here. Doing something special and haven’t e-mailed us yet? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thanks!

The report and photos are from West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) co-proprietor Tim McConnell, as WSR’s annual Thanksgiving Day Gobble Gobble Group Run and food drive started the holiday along Alki Beach:

Thanks to all who came out to support us and the West Seattle Food Bank!

We had a great turnout for our 8th annual Thanksgiving group run.

Perfect running/ walking weather, lots of smiling faces, a few furry friends, and the West Seattle Road Runners youth cross country/track team, who also helped us load up all the canned food donations brought by the participants.

West Seattle Runner’s other holiday-season events include co-presenting Track Friday tomorrow morning (details are in our preview) and the Christmas Light Run on December 16th (here’s our calendar listing); you’ll find both in our West Seattle Holiday Guide too. WSR is an independent local retailer – 2743 California SW – one of the great places where you can shop local this season, not just Black Friday or Small Biz Saturday, but every day!

West Seattle Thanksgiving: 20 years of free community dinners at The Hall at Fauntleroy

They put the “giving” in Thanksgiving! For the 20th year, David Meckstroth and Meg and David Haggerty of Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering (aka DSquared) have just hosted a free community Thanksgiving dinner in West Seattle, at The Hall at Fauntleroy.

Every year their staff and volunteers serve hundreds of people a full traditional holiday meal including roast turkey. They provide everything except desserts, which are provided by community donors:

Donated warm clothing is available too, for anybody in need of it. But many go simply to celebrate community.

P.S. If you missed it and aren’t already cooking dinner, our West Seattle Holiday Guide has info on where you can go (including the West Seattle Eagles, whose own annual free community dinner is scheduled to continue until 5 pm).

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Car windows smashed in multiple West Seattle neighborhoods; police investigating as ‘a priority’

2:23 PM: We concluded this West Seattle Crime Watch report last night with a brief mention of multiple car break-ins near California/Genesee. Comments and tips so far today indicate that was not the only area hit.

That’s a photo texted from North Delridge, near 26th/Genesee/Nevada, where Jen reports “seven cars in a row got windows smashed at 4:30 am.” Police report #2018-437071. Nothing taken from her nor from two other neighbors that she knows of. Not far away, Mark tweeted this photo while police were on scene at 26th/Yancy:

Meantime, back near The Junction:

That’s one of the cars we saw still parked, with broken windows, in the California/42nd/Genesee area. Police had already been to that area, as evidenced by the card left in the car. We later got a text from someone “hit on 39th and Genesee,” sometime after they arrived home around 10:30 pm; police told them several others nearby were hit. Two other reports from comments following last night’s report: Josue reports five cars broken into at Alaska House (42nd/Alaska), and K reports three car break-ins near 34th/Webster. Wherever you are, if it happened to you, please file a police report even if nothing was taken – you can even do that online.

ADDED 8:55 PM: Southwest Precinct operations commander Lt. Steve Strand sent us this update:

We are actively investigating a number of car break-ins near the Alaska Junction, North Delridge, and others. We identified two possible suspects pending further investigation. We also recovered a stolen vehicle with possible evidence from other vehicles. This is a priority for the Seattle Police Department and The Southwest Precinct is allocating resources to address these crimes. Any tips can be sent directly to me at steven.strand@seattle.gov.

FOLLOWUP: 13 sea-lion deaths now blamed on ‘acute trauma … from human interaction’

One week after two California sea lions were necropsied at Don Armeni Boat Ramp, and one day after another was buried on the shore near Seacrest, we have an update: 13 sea-lion deaths in the region – not just West Seattle – blamed on “acute trauma … from human interaction.” That’s from an update on the Seal Sitters Marine Stranding Network website, which says state and federal authorities continue to investigate. Read the update in its entirety by going here.

READER REPORT: Dog attacked

11:16 AM: From Jennie, who says this happened near 48th/Walker (map) and hopes someone can help:

I’m writing to you ask for help as our 11-year-old basset hound was viciously attacked by another dog when we were out walking this morning. This was completely unprovoked so I put this out as a warning to the neighborhood as well.

It was a black with white pit bull mix of medium size being walked by a white woman in her 20s wearing glasses. She was walking it in the other side of the street and it got loose from its choker chain from her and came running across the street and immediately went for our dog’s neck and bit and wouldn’t let go. After wrestling with it and pulling its tail and prying its mouth open, our dog was very lucky and got away. He is in surgery now.

We do not have this woman’s name, but she said she was walking it for someone else. As it was an emergency situation and my husband ran home to get our car, we did not get her details. She asked if she could help, but I didn’t want her coming back near my dog with her dog so i told her to leave. I had both my hands pressing on my dog’s wound so there wasn’t much I could do anyway.

(We hope) that someone might call us to help connect us with the dog’s owner.

My name is Jennie – 206.949.2374. We are lucky it missed the jugular, but our dog is in surgery right now so we are still concerned. Who knows if this dog has attacked before or might again.

Please do NOT attempt to post IDs or guesses in comments – please contact Jennie *directly*. Thank you.

2:44 PM: Update from Jennie – not long after we published her report, she got a call that enabled them to find the dog/owner. Meanwhile, her dog is home from the hospital and recovering.

West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen red CR-V; car break-ins

Two West Seattle Crime Watch reader reports tonight:

STOLEN CR-V: Kirsten reports her car “was parked on 45th Ave between Charlestown and Spokane yesterday evening, and gone today! It is a red 2001 Honda CR-V, plates 774-XOW. The passenger side mirror is damaged and there is a big dent in the back bumper. It’s well loved.

Here’s a photo of a similar car. Call 911 if you see it.

CAR BREAK-INS: Not a lot of info on this so far, but a texter says multiple cars were broken into near California/Genesee tonight. Police were called.

‘Affirmed’: HALA Mandatory Housing Affordability upzoning can move forward, says city Hearing Examiner

6:44 PM: One year after a coalition of neighborhood groups, including five from West Seattle, challenged the Final Environmental Impact Statement for HALA Mandatory Housing Affordability upzoning, city Hearing Examiner Ryan Vancil issued his ruling late today.

Short version: He says the city’s FEIS stands, with the exception of one section.

That’s Vancil’s decision, toward the end of the 38-page ruling:

The neighborhood groups had argued that the EIS was inadequate in a variety of ways, including contentions that it was “one size fits all” rather than addressing unique potential impacts on neighborhoods. They argued their case in hearings over a two-plus-month period this summer; documents and audio recordings are all linked on this page of the Hearing Examiner’s website.

HALA MHA would implement upzoning in urban villages, as well as on commercial/multifamily property throughout the city, in exchange for developer/builders either including a certain percentage of “affordable” units, or paying the city a fee to finance construction of such units elsewhere. The plan now needs City Council approval; the council has had months of hearings (including this one in June in West Seattle) but its vote has been awaiting the appeal decision. (You can use this interactive map to see how any specific property would or wouldn’t be affected.”

So what happens now?

The Hearing Examiner’s decision is the final word from the city but not necessarily the final say in the matter – the appellants could choose to pursue a court case. We’re awaiting their reaction to the ruling.

On the city’s side, Mayor Jenny Durkan has issued a statement calling the ruling “a step forward for more affordable housing in Seattle.”

We’ll be updating this story as the evening goes on.

7:26 PM: First appellant reaction is from the Junction Neighborhood Organization, which filed its own appeal as well as being a member of the citywide coalition:

“On behalf of our neighbors and friends along the West Seattle peninsula, we are deeply disappointed with this ruling,” said Carl Guess, a member of the Junction Neighborhood Organization’s land-use committee. “It’s a big setback for neighborhood-level planning, and represents a new low in the relationship between the City and its urban villages.”

Indeed, hearing examiner Ryan Vancil chided the City for its lack of neighborhood-level analysis even as he largely affirmed its final environmental impact statement.

“[T]he choice not to tell a more detailed story of the City’s neighborhoods contributed to why the City faced a very protracted appeal and hearing process from representatives in many of its neighborhoods,” he wrote.

JuNO made those details the centerpiece of its appeal, pointing to what it called deficiencies in everything from traffic-flow analysis to conflicts between the HALA/MHA legislation and the neighborhood plan of the West Seattle Junction Urban Village.

Guess said those deficiencies remain, despite today’s ruling.

“When we wake up Monday morning, the City will continue to tell us that it takes only eight and a half minutes to cross the West Seattle Bridge during peak traffic flows, which is absurd. It will tell us there is enough infrastructure to support development, when we showed that 90% Seattle’s sewer lines are at or above capacity. It will tell us there are no conflicts with our neighborhood plan when we cited those conflicts specifically and repeatedly.”

Guess said JuNO will study the examiner’s ruling more deeply, then meet with its neighborhood to talk through possible next steps.

“Our neighborhood has been incredibly supportive throughout this process and we can’t thank them enough,” he said.

As for next steps beyond that meeting, one possibility for JuNO is to lobby the City Council in the ritual horse trading expected to take place as the HALA/MHA legislation moves toward approval. Another is to join a nascent effort to create an organization representing neighborhood groups within City Council District 1, now represented by Lisa Herbold.

“The City has destroyed a lot of goodwill in this process, and voters have very long memories,” said Guess.

ADDED 11:25 PM: We also asked Deb Barker, president of the Morgan Community Association – which joined the SCALE appeal as well as filing its own – for comment. Her reply:

MoCA is proud to have joined with the communities of SCALE. We took a stand against the city that acted without properly taking into account the voice of its residents and the impacts of its plan. SCALE made a tremendous effort to identify MHA FEIS deficiencies, and we are saddened how easily that effort was dismissed. MoCA is committed to ensuring that affordable housing remains in our community. To that end, MoCA will be evaluating options to achieve that goal as well as those of SCALE.

The MoCA and JuNO appeal documents were part of this 2017 WSB report.

West Seattle restaurants: Gyro Heroes sets opening date

If you’re tired of turkey by Saturday, you’ll have a new West Seattle restaurant option: That will be opening day for Gyro Heroes in the former Baskin-Robbins at 4111 SW Admiral Way. We first reported back in April that this eatery was on the way. At the time, they hoped to be open in mid-summer, but invariably, remodeling and permitting take longer, and we finally heard from proprietor Tareq that they are ready to open Saturday (November 24th). He was there a bit earlier this afternoon as they finished up work, so we stopped in for a quick peek. He says Gyro Heroes will be open 10 am-9 pm, seven days a week. No website yet; we’re awaiting a copy of the menu and will add it when we get it.

Seen off West Seattle: A finned friend

Thanks to James Moore for sending the photo, taken around 11 this morning. He reports: “It’s not an orca – but I think it’s a harbor porpoise. It was traveling south just off the Arroyos all by itself and as you can see quite close to shore (they’re usually quite far out and in a group).”

About the helicopter: No, it’s not breaking news

In case you wondered (we’ve already received a few questions) – that helicopter is just a TV chopper checking on pre-Thanksgiving Fauntleroy ferry-terminal traffic. (One-hour wait right now, says WSF.) No breaking news.

In case you wondered about the fire callout at Navos (2600 SW Holden) around quarter to 7 this morning – most of the units dispatched were quickly canceled so we didn’t go, but we did subsequently follow up with SFD, whose spokesperson Hilton Almond tells us: “This was a small fire in a bathroom. One person was transported by AMR due to smoke inhalation. The fire is under investigation.”
