TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Friday watch; weekend closures

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

6:59 AM: Good morning! So far, no incidents reported in/from West Seattle.

SCHOOL’S OUT: No classes today for Seattle Public Schools and others that follow its schedule. Highline Public Schools (just south of the city) too.

HIGHWAY 99 CLOSURE & I-5 LANE CLOSURES: Tonight through early Monday. southbound 99 is scheduled to be closed between the West Seattle Bridge and Battery Street Tunnel, and that link has details of NB I-5 lane closures too. (Also note that 99 is scheduled for closure *both* ways next weekend.)

I am a passenger in a car. Just saw 5 vehicles cut across the double white lines including a semi. I’m convinced part of the reason the I5 north onramp backs up so bad is because of the domino effect of people stopping to let in illegal merges. Frustrating to watch it go on day and night year after year. I have been in contact with SPD for years from Segeants up to Assistant Chiefs about this area. I guess my take away is to be thankful for people who follow the law.

At 9:00 am the bridge eastbound was dead until we got to the 4th ave area.

Those people who cut in are either not familiar with where they need to be, or are “cheaters.” They are everywhere. Seattle traffic is horrible enough to begin with, but add aging infrastructure and poor and confusing traffic design to it and you’ve got a mess. Oh, and also add the merging traffic from the Port of Seattle at the entrance to I-5 into one lane with Eastbound traffic from the increasingly growing West Seattle population. I dread driving.

My commute is only 4 to 5 miles and I am a blue collar worker si may not work for you or some but I have been riding my bicycle to and from work and so far it has been great experience.

Agreed about that merge point from the port on the east bound bridge just before the bus lane ends. At that area you have buses flying, semis and other cars coming up the ramp (with no visual for the bus) at a high rate of speed, and people trying to merge right to get off at 1st and 4th Aves. There is going to be a terrible accident there eventually that is likely to involve a lot of people. As an occasional driver and frequent bus rider I’d greatly appreciate if they’d just close that ramp down.

Sorry, comment time is over.
