SPORTS: Chief Sealth IHS hosts Kennedy Catholic HS in football-season opener

9:50 PM: Final score minutes ago at Southwest Athletic Complex – 72-20, Kennedy Catholic High School over Chief Sealth International High School in the football season’s opener.

ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: For the Seahawks, #8, senior Dontae McMillan, was the brightest spot of the game:

He scored all three of Sealth’s touchdowns. For the Lancers, 10 of their 11 touchdowns were on passes by #7, sophomore Sam Huard. The Seattle Times reports that tied the state record. 9 were in the first half.

The second half was delayed by what in effect was an extended halftime, starting when a Kennedy player went down with seconds left in the first half. The stadium remained in a concerned hush while the player was tended to by not only team staff but also Seattle Fire Engine 37 medics but eventually was able to get back up and walk off the field.

The Seahawks had the early lead after scoring the game’s first TD and point-after kick, until the Lancers’ second TD and two-point conversion midway through the first quarter. Halftime score was 59-13.

Next week, Chief Sealth – led again this year by head coach Ted Rodriguezplays on Saturday night (September 8th) at SWAC, vs. Black Hills (from Tumwater).

Roll Kennedy roll! Love to see the alma mater taking names! Lots of West Seattle kids in school there

  • WS mom August 31, 2018 (11:33 pm)

Tough one Sealth!  Good luck next time!  Kennedy did great but keep in mind that recruitment can buy talent. And great talent they recruited! $$

Please let us know what you are talking about.

How is an accusation like this allowed?

      • feigned ignorance September 1, 2018 (10:02 am)

T: Catholic high schools have various advantages when it comes to high school football.  They can recruit from further afield (since they don’t adhere to district boundaries), and they tend to have more money for both scholarships and training facilities.  Those are facts, and probably what WS Mom was referencing.

      • Rocky Raccoon September 1, 2018 (10:20 am)

T, it’s that pesky free speech thing.

  • J September 1, 2018 (12:03 am)

Great sportsmanship by Kennedy coaching staff ….. up by 50 and still kicking onside kicks.  Wow.

    • T September 1, 2018 (2:26 am)

      Sow were grapes? Wow

    • West Seattle Hipster September 1, 2018 (10:50 am)

Up 50 and kicking onside kicks????Completely classless coaching staff at Kennedy, I will now root against them in every game.Total lack of sportsmanship.

      • WS Football Mom September 2, 2018 (6:17 am)

So then you will root against all the teams that beat their opponents by the same margins or more, because there were quite a few! Check the scores. I’m sure there will be even more since we are only in week one. You may not agree with the coaches decisions but why begrudge the team, the players? You have no idea the work some of the kids put in to get where they are or the sacrifices we as parents make to help them get there. Sure some have the money but the majority do not. Kennedy has been on the other end as well, two years ago we lost our first playoff game 51-6…didn’t cry and whine about it. It’s a good lesson, it shows you where you are and where you want to be. They have to decide to put in the work.

    • feigned ignorance September 1, 2018 (8:20 pm)

Eh, it’s football.  I don’t begrudge them for practicing onside kicks.  You think the opposing team wants the winning team to back down?  Honestly that’d be more insulting than them piling on the points and practicing onside kicks.  Not a fan of lopsided competition, but once it starts there’s not really a better alternative than both sides playing as well as they can.

  • SD September 1, 2018 (7:47 am)

J- I agree and T this not sour grapes.   I am just a community member who was watching a game with no kids at either of  the schools and friends on both sides of this game.  Why the onside kicks multiple times when Kennedy was ahead by 20, 30 and 50 points?

    • Question Authority September 1, 2018 (8:37 am)

Because you play to win not to show mercy.

      • HS sports fan September 1, 2018 (11:04 am)

Kennedy Catholic was padding their QB’s stats.  Sam Huard threw 10 touchdown passes.

  • Nurse Alison September 1, 2018 (9:47 am)

On to the next game, Hawks!  You are ana amazing group of very talented players who will shine again next week. GO HAWKS!

  • Admiral Mom September 1, 2018 (5:42 pm)

Onward! With Coach Rodriguez anything is possible

  • TJ September 1, 2018 (7:11 pm)

Kennedy wasn’t running trick plays on the onside kicks. They were lining up in obvious formation to do it, and Sealth knew they were coming. It is widely held that onside kicks are an advantage to the receiving team. Just recover it and you are in great field position, and the kicking team needs to do a few things great to be in position to even recover it. That is not poor sportsmanship. It’s on Sealth. And regarding Kennedy’s supposed advantages…I will guarantee Sealth has a better weight room than Kennedy’s. What they do is require a dedication, summer camps, working out, developing relationships with trainers and skill camps. I do know that Sealth does not do this, or to a limited degree. And it’s not only pricate schools. Bothel, Skyline, and Graham Kapowsin are public schools that I know first hand do the same thing. And regarding recruiting and scholarships; my sons good friend was in the stands last night in the band, lives on the Kent East Hill, and is on financial aid

    • WSB September 1, 2018 (9:57 pm)

According to online calendars, practice for Sealth started a week before practice for Kennedy. Meantime, while your son’s friend might well have been among the sizable Kennedy crowd at SWAC last night, he wasn’t there as a band member – neither band was there, as I mentioned on Twitter during the game. https://twitter.com/westseattleblog/status/1035748972814426112

Kennedy is a larger school (4A) than Sealth (3A). And a datapoint for those who don’t know, Kennedy’s athletic director Sam Reed is a former Sealth AD.

      • WS Football Mom September 2, 2018 (6:20 am)

Shame on you for saying this without even fact checking! Kennedy is a legit 2A school and has been for some time. They are in no way a much larger school!

        • WSB September 2, 2018 (9:51 am)

I said “larger,” not “much larger.” Nonetheless, as pointed out by TJ, that was inaccurate (and I’ve added a strikeout line). I said that based on the fact that they play in 4A, and Sealth in 3A, which is accurate; that classification is primarily based on size, but they chose to level up, which I didn’t know was an option until this discussion. Sealth, in fact, is listed here as an opt-up as well. So both apparently would be in 2A if they hadn’t opted up.

P.S. West Seattle also is listed on that WIAA page as having opted up to 3A. – TR

    • feigned ignorance September 1, 2018 (10:40 pm)

TJ…  You guarantee they have a better weight room eh?  Too bad your word doesn’t seem to amount to anything.  Now like I said, I got no problem with playing your heart out on the field–no problem with piling on the points, but when you call me a liar?  When you say they don’t have an advantage in recruitment or funding?  Then we got a problem.  You doubt the “supposed” advantages of a Catholic high school compared to public schools?  Do your homework, son.  I’m not making this stuff up–they got better facilities, more money, and better recruitment.  That’s a fact.  So sit back down before you get schooled again.

      • Comeback King September 10, 2018 (9:24 am)

Catholic schools do not receive any public funding so all the money they receive is from tuition, donations, and fundraisers. They have to work hard for their money and do not rely on the tax payers. And facilities???? Kennedy just updated the weight room after 25+ years and the new field cannot ever be used for games. So….. I am just confused because you clearly did not do your homework. Sit back down.

  • TJ September 1, 2018 (10:17 pm)

You are correct, Kennedy’s band was not playing last night. Just treveled from Kent to support the team. And regarding enrollment…Sealth has a larger enrollment than Kennedy. As a matter of fact, Kennedy could actually be in 2A. They opt up to play in the NPSL 4A league for competition.

    • WSB September 1, 2018 (10:44 pm)

The WIAA does allow opting up.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Interscholastic_Activities_Association

Sealth is estimated to have about 968 students this year per documents from a board briefing last month. Can’t find Kennedy’s enrollment (aside from various review sites that don’t cite their source) but it appears to be about 100 fewer if those unsourced citations are in the ballpark.

  • TJ September 1, 2018 (11:31 pm)

Well Feigned Ignorance, go check out Kennedy’s weight room. Not much has changed in it down in the basement since I worked out there in the 1980’s. And I don’t think I called you a liar anywhere. Sealth has a field to practice on, Kennedy has a field to practice on (and no stadium to play on campus like Sealth). Yes, Kennedy draws students from all over so that they can actually have a student body to make a school. Do they recruit? Possibly to a degree, but not on par with other local private schools. You want to talk recruiting? Anybody in the know knows that Garfield last year had the worst, most blatant recruiting possibly ever. Worse than Bellevue thru the years. 15 transfers from outlying areas coming in for junior and senior years? So I can tell you son, public schools can do it. They are doing it all over. It takes parents buying in. Funding their kids to attend these skill camps and teams. Kennedy’s quarterback is a sophmore that is already a top level national recruit whose dad played years in the NFL. Money not a problem for them. Was not recruited to Kennedy. Decided late to have him go there. And I will tell you I get zero financial aid for my kid who plays. This is just football. Sealth’s boys basketball team would beat Kennedy’s most years. Baseball a toss up. I mean, if you want to talk about getting schooled, you should probably just take a seat

    • feigned ignorance September 2, 2018 (9:06 am)

Thanks for confirming that when it comes to football Kennedy has more aggressive recruitment and better funding than, say, Sealth.  Since that’s all this conversation was about, you’ve conceded.  As for your distractions–we weren’t talking about basketball or baseball, now were we?  No, we are talking about football, and I have no idea why you keep arguing that Kennedy doesn’t have specific and tangible advantages on that front.  It’s well known that Catholic high schools are juggernauts when it comes to football programs (which is great–I absolutely love HS football at that level), that’s just the way it is.  All you have to do is look at top 25 or top 100 lists each year–Catholic schools are powerhouses. And again, I think it’s kinda cool for the sport to have such elite teams–I’m not complaining but I also don’t have my head in the sand about their various advantages.  That’s all I’m saying and now I’m out.

      • darcy September 3, 2018 (9:26 pm)

Why did either team schedule this game?  dumb and dumber?

Sorry, comment time is over.
