UPDATE: Deadly shooting at High Point bus stop, West Seattle’s fifth 2018 homicide

(First & last photo by WSB’s Patrick Sand)

11:23 PM: Thanks for the tips. There’s a “scenes of violence” response at 35th and Morgan. Some texters report having heard gunfire. More details soon.

11:29 PM: Per scanner, a victim is being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

11:40 PM: Also per scanner, the victim is a 20-year-old with two gunshot wounds. A gun has been found nearby. Our crew has just arrived and we are adding a photo from the west side of the intersection.

(This photo and next by WSB’s Christopher Boffoli)

11:55 PM: No arrest reported so far. Since a bus/bus stop is involved, county officers are there along with SPD. Also, our crew says the intersection of 35th/Morgan is closed off.

1:42 AM: Police at the scene refused to comment and pointed us to media relations, but they aren’t commenting yet. So our crew finally left. Homicide detectives were among the police at the scene, though we’ll note that doesn’t necessarily indicate anything about the victim’s fate – they respond to some non-fatal incidents too.

Meantime, we just heard via the scanner that most of the intersection (except for the scene on the northwest side) is reopening.

8:07 AM UPDATE: Just talked to Det. Mark Jamieson of the SPD media-relations team. The victim, now described as a 37-year-old man, died at the hospital. No arrest yet. He says they believe the victim and the killer got into an argument on a bus, got off at the westbound Morgan stop (shown in our photos), it escalated, and that’s when the killer shot the victim. No description of the killer. They are asking anyone with information to call the tipline at 206-233-5000.

9:09 AM: This is also now on SPD Blotter. Meantime, we need to also note that it’s the fifth West Seattle homicide of the year – all in the past three months – after the deadly shooting of Micaiah Kotthoff in the east Highland Park area in July, the stabbing deaths of Michael Abay in South Delridge in July and Jonathan Pecina near Luna/Anchor Park in June, and the shooting death of Lorenzo Marr in May at West Seattle Stadium. No arrests reported in any of these cases so far.

  • Upper Gatewood resident August 9, 2018 (11:34 pm)

I was working at my computer by an open window and heard the gunfire clearly, 4-5 shots/pops in rapid succession, followed by sirens a few minutes later.  I can hear the various emergency sirens going now on.  Very disturbing and scary.

  • WS dude August 9, 2018 (11:38 pm)

I was sitting outside and heard about 6 shots and a car squealing it’s tires coming from what sounded like 35th and Morgan.

    • Emerald_Patriot August 10, 2018 (12:15 pm)

Yes this is exactly what I heard too. Initially thought it was fireworks like I’ve heard before except for the squealing tires, and the sirens afterwards confirmed my suspicions.

I know police security cameras in public areas are not popular, but I think it could be helpful at this intersection. Primarily to deter crime, and secondarily to help with situations like this when there is little to no information available about the shooter who is still at large and likely to frequent this area, the 5th, FIFTH!, homicide in West Seattle alone this year.

Tentatively, does anybody know what the process would be like to get a security camera installed at this intersection?

Daytime seems safe, but at night I would not recommend walking around the food bank and low income housing area alone, and to drive instead. At least none of the homicides so far have involved breaking and entering etc so the violence seems to be limited to bad places at bad times. Just unfortunate one such bad place is so close to home…

      • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (12:56 pm)

I agree and maybe if we go to the crime prevention meetings or focus groups that might be a place to start? I’m for it-as a community we gotta do something it’s increasing …enough is enough

  • Terri August 9, 2018 (11:41 pm)

I heard what sounded like 6 distinct shots, then car tires squealing. Thought it came from west of us (37th SW). Then sirens. Scary.

    • ~hockeywitch~ August 9, 2018 (11:58 pm)

I heard the tires screeching after the shots too… craziness…

  • ~hockeywitch~ August 9, 2018 (11:41 pm)

I live next to Pizza hut.. about 5 shots fired, then swarmed by police and sheriff departments. Bus is roped off…

    • WSB August 9, 2018 (11:47 pm)

We have added a pic. The bus and/or bus stop was involved somehow and as a result KCSO is investigating too.

  • ~hockeywitch~ August 9, 2018 (11:44 pm)

I live right next door to Pizza Hut. I heard the gunshots, was probably about 5 of them and then I heard screeching tires. then Sirens just came swarming the police and sheriffs and everybody. the bus and the streets roped-off the officers are walking around. in the bus

  • Wsprayers August 9, 2018 (11:44 pm)

My 16 yr old wanted to get some Cheetos at 11pm I went with him -we were in Walgreens when the shots were fired we stayed in the store u til emergency vehicles showed up then went to get the bus back home -scene seemed to be around the 128 westbound bus stop-

  • Misti August 9, 2018 (11:47 pm)

Do you know if they caught the shooter? There are police and sheriff vehicles all around the high point neighborhood. One sitting outside my window, not moving.

    • WSB August 9, 2018 (11:52 pm)

      No arrest so far.

      • Elaine August 10, 2018 (12:59 am)

If the shooter hasn’t been caught yet, maybe the police should try looking in some of those dark empty building frame’s that are being built.  Also do you have any description of the person or the vehicle that was involved.  I hope that some K9’s are put out to search.

    • Misty Jones August 10, 2018 (1:43 am)

      not yet

  • Wsprayers August 9, 2018 (11:48 pm)

My 16 yr old wanted Cheetos at 11 I had a feeling I needed to go with him-we were in walgreens when shots were fired we stayed inside until emergence vehicles came it seemed to be around the 128 bus stop all passengers were off the bus the bus was stopped and responders were treating the victum

    • Elaine August 10, 2018 (1:06 am)

Was the victim a passenger on the metro bus or a person at the bus stop?

      • Wsprayers August 10, 2018 (2:13 am)

        I’m not sure-interested to find out myself-so scary….

  • RabidNemo August 10, 2018 (12:04 am)

What is happening to West Seattle :(

  • Sd August 10, 2018 (12:06 am)

I was leaving work across the street, and seen the bus pull up heard about 5 shots, and as soon as I looked again seen a car speeding away. I ran over and tried to help him . Praying he will be okay, so scary that it happened right in front of me as I was leaving work .

    • Elaine August 10, 2018 (1:09 am)

What kind of car?, and color please???

    • Ao August 10, 2018 (1:29 pm)

You’re a good person. Om glad to hear that someone tried to help

      • Sd August 11, 2018 (8:05 pm)

There was lots of people trying to help this young man. So damn that he had to lose his life over something stupid. There is flowers next to the bus stop for him today, praying his family get closure and the man who did this to him is caught .

    • Dom August 12, 2018 (11:55 pm)

I knew him. Taylor fehlan was his name. He didn’t deserve to die. I want to see justice.

    • Emerald_Patriot August 10, 2018 (12:17 pm)

Good idea! When, where, and how for those of us who do not know?

      • T August 10, 2018 (3:00 pm)

Scroll down on the main page. WSB posted times, dates, locations a day or 2 ago coincidentally. I am going to mine.

  • Justin August 10, 2018 (12:15 am)

I pulled up to 35th and Morgan intersection as the shooting was unraveling. Just before the Enterprise car rental place and slowing to the yellow light, I heard 6-8 shots in rapid succession. I quickly pulled into the Uhaul lot and “hid”. Waited about a min, heard people shouting. Pulled out to 35th and saw a large group of people hanging behind corner store. In the short time I witnessed, no one in the area seemed  “phased” by the incident. Came home a bit shaken. Thanks WS blog 👌

    • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (1:15 am)

I saw the group too-before and after we went into Walgreens they were talking about it -heard the shots and “what’s going on in our hood” mentioned this is the 3rd shooting in a month-people are phased…it did seem surreal tho with so many people out and about never would guess another shooting was gonna happend-then again my mother instincts said go to the store with my teen….

  • Denise August 10, 2018 (12:17 am)

20 years I have lived with this crack corner. When is somthing going to be done.?? All hours of the day people just hanging out. Why? scary folks uneasy going to Walgreens. WHAT CAN BE DONE?!

    • Mari August 10, 2018 (1:03 am)

This is so true! Just moved to Edmonds and it’s so drastically different from that terrible corner. When I was there, walking to Walgreens was so scary I’d be clinging to my tazer for dear life and I’d never dream of going out at night! Now we leave all our windows and back doors wide open without worry.

      • newnative August 10, 2018 (3:43 pm)

That’s hilarious. Meanwhile, my coworkers that live in Edmonds have walked in on an assault on a woman in broad daylight on the beach. Crime is everywhere.

    • Alki resident August 14, 2018 (5:40 pm)

20 years? I just had my 30th high school reunion. It’s been going on for way longer than that.

  • April August 10, 2018 (1:04 am)

I am so glad I bought a house in Edmonds.
I’m tired of the violence and the sketchy characters lerking around. You’re right? What is going to be done about it?… Probably more of the same, which is nothing.I’m done with city living all together. I never thought I’d hear myself say that.
Can you believe it, though? My 15 year old daughter and I were dropping off our keys at the rental we just moved out of, while THIS was happening a block away. Jesus!
We saw all the emergency responders when we drove through that intersection minutes later. And news cameras, police and all that were already there.
We pulled over to let the ambulance with the victim in it pass by us. And I said to my daughter, “There must have been a shooting, Sweetheart. And that ambulance probably has a man in it who has bullet holes in him.”
    She concurred.
    So sad.

    • J August 10, 2018 (8:38 am)

That is ironic that you just dropped your keys.  Enjoy Edmonds.  It’s beautiful out there.

  • Chris McCorkle August 10, 2018 (1:44 am)

I was on the bus right after this coming back from my rehearsal space and right across the street from where a local and regular white Center West Seattle favorite friend of too many was killed. its getting crazy out. look out for each other

  • Jacob August 10, 2018 (1:56 am)

I live on the corner and the police lights woke me up – walked out and the officer was annoyed – “So I guess people are attracted to the flashing lights, huh?” She said there were fatalities. and it would “be on the news.”

    • WSB August 10, 2018 (2:22 am)

One person was taken to the hospital. Whether he survived, we don’t know. The only official SPD statement as of this hour remains this tweet with info we had already reported (1 victim, taken to HMC). As for “the news,” we were the only news organization there for most of the two hours until we left – TV stopped by but then took off for a more serious-sounding shooting somewhere else, reportedly in Marysville.

  • Dy August 10, 2018 (1:57 am)

Super sad for these young people today.I been in the area for 32 years and that Conner has not changed.sad for the metro bus driver too as I was a driver for 16 yrs.we see a lot.sad for all.praying for the young man tonight.

  • SSS August 10, 2018 (4:59 am)

There’s a group that hangs out at in the back corner of the parking lot on the side of the mini mart. The other day they had about 25 empty alcohol bottles sitting on the curb. i’ve seen them loitering, playing cards and smoking out in there cars.  It’s sad to say I’m not surprised. We called the police a few years ago and said they can’t do much about it. Lately more people having been just hanging out at the bus stops on that corner. I never feel safe going into that Walgreens. I wish both businesses wouldn’t put up with it and do something about it.

    • Steven August 10, 2018 (8:44 am)

I don’t see what this group has to do with the shooting. Did you talk to this group before calling the police on them? Perhaps you should reflect on why a group of people who aren’t harming anyone makes you feel unsafe.

      • Misti August 10, 2018 (9:11 am)

Thank you for bringing this voice to the discussion. I walk to that Walgreen’s frequently, even at night, and have never felt unsafe.

      • WS neighbor August 10, 2018 (11:13 am)

I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes there’s an assumption made about a group of people based on deeply ingrained stereotypes about youth, color, being poor, etc. I mean, Edmonds is lovely but a lot less diverse than our High Point neighborhood… does this make it *seem* safer? And if this group hangs out on this corner frequently, it’s most likely they had nothing to do with this murder.

        • Jennifer Hall August 10, 2018 (11:19 pm)

Right on, West Seattle  neighbor!  Thank you for being a voice of reason.

          • wsres August 11, 2018 (8:44 am)

If you are a woman and you walk by a big group of males in an alley that are drinking, then you will not feel safe. There is no way in hell I’d ask a group of guys drinking why they are hanging out there. Seriously? Drinking out in public is illegal. I have seen drug deals happen in that area. You’re dumb if you walk up to ask a group of guys drinking in an alley near that intersection something.

  • Sean August 10, 2018 (7:14 am)

This is so sad…I lived in West Seattle 10 years and recently left due to the constant threat of drug addicts and gangsters…west Settle is such a good place with great people other than that…  BUT I had to leave…I cannot raise children in such an environment and am in a far better place now…Regarding 35th and Morgan…that’s is a drug dealer corner… I have driven by there thousands of times and many many times a have I seen gangsters hanging out in the the bus stops…Dear SPD this intersection should be watched, logged and these weasels should be driven out so the innocent people in the area can relax a little…

    • sam-c August 10, 2018 (8:46 am)

At that corner, there’s often been suspicious activity, here and there, for as long as I can remember.    At least since I moved to WS in 2005.

    • LK August 10, 2018 (9:44 am)

I guess it’s all relative to your perspective.  Having moved here from Oakland, the hot spots that scare most people around here seem like Beverly Hills to me.  Glad to be here.  It feels really safe with a stronger sense of community (thank you WSB)  and way less gang mayhem than what I’d been accustomed to.   Keep in mind, the majority of these kind of shootings are targeted, and while it’s entirely possible to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, it’s likely not you these criminals are looking for.

      • SafeinWS August 10, 2018 (1:42 pm)

Completely agree with you LK.  Anyone who uses the term “gangsters” has never lived anywhere truly dangerous.

    • One August 10, 2018 (11:08 am)

Have been living in West Seattle for 6 years, a great place to live and raise children.

  • D August 10, 2018 (8:00 am)

I hope the victim is ok. I hope this also brings light to this area of our neighborhood; it needs either video cameras to document illegal activity or the Walgreens and gas station should hire private security.  I stopped going to this Walgreens because of the loitering individuals always hanging out behind the building and in the parking lot.

    • WSB August 10, 2018 (8:06 am)

Am on the phone with SPD now. Victim died. Updating the story shortly.

      • We Prayers August 10, 2018 (8:22 am)

Awe man! Was up half the night praying the guy would be ok…do u know if he was a passenger on the bus? Or was he getting on the bus? There didn’t seem to be any activity at the bus stop before me and my kid went into the store-and the group that was hanging out in parking lot had nothing to do with it they seemed to be minding their own business seemed concerned heard them mention “what’s going on people just shooting each other like nothing” when me and son left the store so sad and scary -prayers for his friends and family and for our community

        • WSB August 10, 2018 (8:23 am)

As noted in the story, police believe both the victim and the killer were on the bus, got into some kind of argument, got off the bus at that stop (by U-Haul, westbound Morgan west of 35th), and then the shooting happened.

          • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (8:31 am)

Someone on the bus or the bus driver must have seen the shooter The bus and passengers were all out there with emergency responders hopefully they give a description we don’t need people in our community running around with guns shooting people when disagreements happen

          • sam-c August 10, 2018 (8:48 am)

Hopefully the bus will have a recording of the argument, and have images of the suspect. Don’t the buses have cameras?

          • WSB August 10, 2018 (8:49 am)

Not all, last time I checked. (But it’s been a while since that check, so someone please correct me if that has changed.)

          • selah August 10, 2018 (9:10 am)

most busses now a days have camera

          • CAM August 10, 2018 (9:59 am)

I haven’t ridden a bus in recent history that doesn’t have a camera.

          • Kat August 10, 2018 (10:28 am)

The 128 is the one route that does not consistantly have cameras on it. I am a daily rider on this bus as I work at one of the businesses on 35th and Morgan. 10 out of 14 times of riding that route they do not have cameras. I myself have been mugged on this route and ended up on house rest for a week.

          • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (12:52 pm)

Thank u for this info Kat I ride the 128 often and never noticed the bus didn’t have cameras -this route definitely should being the route it takes -I’m going to call metro as I did before about the bus stop downtown there at 3rd and pike they had made some changes -voices need to speak into these issues we need change I know I need to feel safe – and so does everyone in this community pushes me to speak when stuff like this happenes and it seems like it’s not getting better only worse

      • D August 10, 2018 (4:49 pm)

I’m sorry to hear about the guy passing away. Thanks for all the updates WSB.

    • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (10:39 am)

The employees at Walgreens locked the doors as soon as shots were fired and called in their security he was quick-showed up within 5mins-he told us to stay in the store with doors locked at least u til emergency vehicles arrived-There has got to be cameras-at this intersection/sidewalks-they are everywhere recording for traffic/tickets/safety/etc-i believe the city is responsible for those cameras – they usually are where the street lights are -can’t easily see them

      • WSB August 10, 2018 (11:26 am)

If there are cameras, they are private. The city does not have even a traffic camera at 35th/Morgan (nor at most intersections; you can see on the city map which ones do.)

        • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (12:44 pm)

That’s crazy! That there is no cameras at this intersection-it’s a busy one for sure! For traffic-people-the food bank and Stewart manor -the buses ….I’ve lived on and off in west Seattle most my life this intersection is known for its business -it’s gotten better thro the years but yes it still has its issues-was certain there was cameras

  • quora August 10, 2018 (8:10 am)

So is the fingerprint ID measure that just passed on the ballot going to solve this crime? Any crime? That’s why I voted “no”. So people have been complaining about the hooligans hanging out near this corner for a long time, and now a shooting happens? SHOCKING. Way to go, SPD!

    • WSB August 10, 2018 (8:18 am)

Don’t know if there are any fingerprints to use in this investigation. But certainly there were evidence markers at the scene. By the way, read our update. This did NOT involve “hooligans at the corner” – it involved two people who got off a bus, at the stop on westbound Morgan west of 35th, by U-Haul.

      • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (8:25 am)

Just saw update thank you for being so diligent with keeping community informed -so sad and disturbing

  • H August 10, 2018 (8:21 am)

How awful. This is not the way I’d like to go and wouldn’t wish it upon another person. My condolences to the family who just lost a loved one.

  • Jbo August 10, 2018 (8:58 am)

Known hotspot for crime the police should have better ways to deal wirh these. Does spd still have a gang unit it seems like they never announce any more If they are involved

    • ScubaFrog August 10, 2018 (10:28 am)

Captain Davis says the shootings/stabbings this summer are NOT gang-related.  This may one could be?  And yes, SPD has a Gang Unit.

  • Karen August 10, 2018 (9:05 am)

I’m not seeing an obvious connection between 2 people getting off the bus and the resulting shooting and the folks that hang out on the side of that building. I’m not reading anything that connects the 2 but perhaps I’m missing something.

    • Jort August 10, 2018 (11:10 am)

Thank you, Karen. I am also curious. I’m wondering what these folks think the connection might be… gosh … it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is they might be thinking of. Geez it’s right on the tip of my tongue but I just can’t seem to figure it out…. maybe if I read some more comments about “gangsters” and “loitering” I might be able to understand…. Hmmmmm

  • Ken August 10, 2018 (9:48 am)

People hanging out at the bus stop are waiting for the bus. Some of them are black and hispanic. They live here because of the historic red line and its legacy. Trump really has let you guys out of the closet hasn’t he.

    • CAM August 10, 2018 (10:01 am)

      Thanks, Ken.

  • ~hockeywitch~ August 10, 2018 (9:57 am)

This all happened across the street from me.. I watched a lot from my bedroom window. I’m sad to find that the man lost his life. What happened to the days of a fist fight when you had a beef with someone? You duked it out, made up and got over it. Now every little thing gets resolved in taking another life. It’s sickening.  So sad. Condolences to the victims family and friends.

  • old timer August 10, 2018 (10:15 am)

If they were arguing on the bus prior to the shooting,is there any video of value from the bus these guys got off?

  • ScubaFrog August 10, 2018 (10:26 am)

Very sad.  I used to wash my cars all the time at the car wash right there.  What a sad summer for so many.

  • Jason August 10, 2018 (10:46 am)

There’s really a shocking amount of conclusion-jumping in this thread. Two guys get off a bus in West Seattle and get into a fight, suddenly every “unsavory” character within a block radius is a suspect. The truth is you don’t even know if either of these individuals live anywhere near that corner. It just happened to be the corner at which they get off a bus during a fight.I live in High Point and frequent that Walgreens regularly and have never, for one moment, felt unsafe. People should really check their prejudices before hitting that “Send message” button. This community is better than that.

    • Peeb August 10, 2018 (12:49 pm)

Agree. I live a few blocks from here and have been to Walgreens many, many times, day and night, and have never felt unsafe. Yes, there are sometimes poeple hanging out in the mini-mart parking lot, but that doesn’t mean that they’re looking to cause trouble.

    • WTF August 10, 2018 (12:57 pm)

      New to the area?

    • KM August 10, 2018 (1:22 pm)

I think we need to figure out *why* someone would say they feel unsafe before we jump to any conclusions, here and just in general. It could be due to their sex, gender, race, religion, etc. As Zark pointed out below, women have been singled out in this area–and if women don’t feel safe in that area, it might not be because they are racist or classist or whatever-ist. It’s not that cut and dry.

      • sam-c August 10, 2018 (2:42 pm)

Maybe I’m always the right place , wrong time kinda person.  The sort of activity I’m thinking of near the mini mart includes people yelling at each other and acting like they’re about to fight (more than once), cars flying into the mini-mart parking lot & screeching to a halt, people flying out of the alley behind the mini-mart, oblivious to pedestrians and other cars on Morgan, someone suddenly stepping off the curb and into the street at the bus stop right in front of my car (maybe not all their facilities operating at 100%)….etc.  You’re right, there have been plenty of times that I’ve been to Pizza Hut, rented at the U-Haul, shopped at Walgreens, volunteered at the Food Bank, and saw nothing out of the ordinary.  But the unsafe instances stand out  in your memory more.

    • Mari August 10, 2018 (5:15 pm)

It’s not a matter of race. I was a 14 year old girl and I had to be on edge every time I left my house in High Point. There is a man that often walks around in the area drinking and yelling at himself and everyone that he sets eyes on (he is white). As well as being called out to inappropriately when minding my business from men at the gas station and one (white guy) who was in a car at the stop light said “where do you think you’re going pretty lady” as he was leaning out of his car, when I ran from this man he illegally made a u-turn to follow me so I turned down the nearest street and ducked behind a dumpster. Luckily he didn’t find me but he circled the block twice. I have been in countless situations like this.

Exactly why there should be cameras at this intersection – so not ok….I’m going to the focus group today do u have any other ideas about how to make it safe? Being a young lady in our community what would help? Prayers for supernatural protection over at all times ♥️

        • Mari August 16, 2018 (3:05 pm)

I’ve been following your comments and I think our are on the right track and hope your ideas are supported and we all can make an effort to improve the community. I moved to Edmonds before this happened but I happened to be in the area at the time this happened. Its sad to see this city become so violent! I will always be a seattleite at heart. Thank you for taking a stand and I hope you and your son stay safe!

  • MJ August 10, 2018 (11:46 am)

I hope Seattle is not becoming like Chicago!  This gun violence needs to stop!

    • Lk August 15, 2018 (6:35 pm)

Seattle is no where close to Chicago’s crime level so stop it right there.

  • zark00 August 10, 2018 (12:33 pm)

Go to Walgreens all the time at night – it’s not “scary” unless you’re just straight up racist.  The guys who hang out in the lot are not very nice people, I would describe them as complete and utter jerks actually. They yell lewd stuff at women all the time, which I really think you don’t do unless you’re just not a nice person. But they also just about live in that lot and I highly doubt they’re even armed.  Not too hard to track them down, they are ALWAYS there.  I have had several interactions with them, they are fine, just really not very nice people – which isn’t a crime.   This was an argument on a bus, that escalated to a shooting, and not a single comment about the availability of guns being an issue.  It’s an issue, I don’t care about your inept and incorrect interpretation of the 2nd, it’s a problem, and you gun fetishists are a big part of that problem.  There are A LOT of guns in West Seattle, where were all you “good guys” and your guns?  What happened?  I thought you’re ownership of guns was going to keep us all safe – not so much eh?  Start ranting now – give us all of your gloriously misguided opinions on why this has nothing to do with the cheap and readily available guns in the US – let us all know how this has nothing to do with guns and everything to do with – I don’t know – aliens? people being the wrong color?  whatever wingnut garbage you’re about to spew.

    • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (1:08 pm)

I agree those guys are not a threat-seem to be very much just visible members of our community. In response to the gun issue what about the stabbings then? If it’s a gun issue that doesn’t resolve scenes of violence when it comes to knives….people are really knee jerk reacting with weapons instead of fists-don’t think or care if that’s someone’s brother son daughter father etc. The lack of care of life is a definite issue

    • MrsDumass August 10, 2018 (1:26 pm)

@zark00-If I feel threatened by a group of not nice people, drinking all night in a parking lot and yelling lewd comments at me (your words)- I’m a straight up racist?!  I would find that very scary and threatening, and I would (like many others here) avoid that situation. Very compelling perspective. Your statement is so ridiculous I would suspect you’re trolling- but I don’t think you are.

      • zark00 August 10, 2018 (3:23 pm)

First off I said if you think Walgreens is scary at night, you’re racist – period.  I didn’t say, in any way, that if you are accosted you are racist.  So you just didn’t read I guess, or probably more likely I struck a nerve and you feel very defensive about something you have no reason to be defensive about unless there’s some truth there.  You invented an entire scenario where it would be ok for you to feel ‘scared’ to justify what exactly?  I didn’t say a single word about those guys “drinking all night” – in fact nobody but you said these guys were ‘drinking all night’ – someone said lots of booze bottles, you made it night time, and made these people attacking you.  That’s some serious hoop jumping to justify something you are feeling that I think you know you probably shouldn’t be feeling.

        • Neighbor August 10, 2018 (7:56 pm)

I feel exactly the same way. I go to that Walgreens daily, and, while there are usually people around, I have never felt in any danger. People jump to conclusions based on their racist notions on what these people must be up to.

      • zark00 August 10, 2018 (3:50 pm)

Where did I say they were “drinking all night”?  You misread, or didn’t understand, or both.  Don’t misrepresent what I said to explain yourself.  Not cool.

        • singularname August 10, 2018 (11:06 pm)

“They yell lewd stuff at women all the time, which I really think you don’t do unless you’re just not a nice person” + “you’re racist – period” = You’re a problem, Zark00

        • Sam-c August 11, 2018 (8:17 am)

It says a lot …. If you think people yelling lewd comments isn’t scary.  …wow.when that happens, certainly not scared for my life…. But definitely DON’T feel SAFE. Geez…

        • JanS August 11, 2018 (8:12 pm)

Zark, I would venture to say that you do not know a think about how, when , where women feel unsafe. “Yelling lewd things at women” is not  where I want to frequent. Men don’t have to deal with the lewd catcalling, and many, like you simply think women are making too big a deal out of it. We’re not. All men need to learn to keep their yaps shut and just stop it. No, I would not feel safe.  Yes, I should be able to walk  at that intersection any time, and feel like it’s OK. We don’t live in the land of “should”.Please just speak for yourself. Do not feel like you have the authority to speak for anyone else, male, female, white, green, red, yellow, brown, black, chartreuse, whatever. Don’t ASSume anything about anyone but yourself. Only speak for yourself.

      • Karen August 13, 2018 (8:16 pm)

I’m a solidly middle aged professional white lady who lives about 10 blocks from the mini mart near Walgreens. I personally don’t feel any threat being in that parking lot. Drinkers who drink to the point of being drunk ( if they are indeed drinking) can be loud and obnoxious but probably the least threatening bunch. Cat calling is obnoxious and rude and no woman should have to deal with that shite and whereas cat calling is associated with aggressive behavior I have not in my 14 yrs in the neighbor hood heard of a single instant of aggressive behavior towards business patrons in that parking lot. I relate to what Zark00 said. I don’t feel the need to feel threatened by a group of folks that couldn’t be more different than me. Perhaps they are jerks and not nice people but that doesn’t mean they are threatening.

  • WTF August 10, 2018 (12:55 pm)

Wonder what all these killings/murders have in common?

    • Rider August 10, 2018 (5:32 pm)

      Angry men!

  • Adelita August 10, 2018 (1:28 pm)

You guys also failed to mention the two men that were killed in January at taradise Cafe that also is in West Seattle

    • WSB August 10, 2018 (1:36 pm)

Those murders were in White Center.

  • DK August 10, 2018 (4:49 pm)

Bus 7003 is equipped with cameras inside and out with infrared capabilities. They should help.

  • Dunno August 10, 2018 (6:17 pm)

What does race have to do with someone yelling lewd things at women?   Does it matter?   Read your posts carefully.  There are guys that might be packing guns or maybe not?   I go there at night and have no problem’s with anyone, but you make it sound pretty sketchy.  Who’s spewing garbage?

  • quora August 10, 2018 (7:25 pm)

Something that doesn’t add up. Everyone in the area who were near the shooting said they heard screeching car tires and vehicle(s) speeding away after the man was shot. But the cops said they think the two men were riding the bus together, argued, and the shooting occurred after they exited the bus.1. Did the guy get away on foot or hop in a getaway car? Were the cars speeding away bystanders who saw the shooting, freaked out and floored it?2. If this shooting happened on the bus, there has to be other riders who saw this go down before the shooting happened. If this one doesn’t get solved ASAP then I fear we are all screwed. This should not be happening in our community.

    • Ws prayers August 10, 2018 (7:58 pm)

That’s what im saying ! There were at least a handful of people that were at the bus stop the bus and the bus driver someone saw the shooter -someone saw them srgue for 0 description is just not believable-maybe people are scared to report? All 5 homicides so far this year are unsolved-without any leads/descriptions of the killers is even more frighting these people still out there -and will be until someone says something

    • Quora August 10, 2018 (8:07 pm)

I typed that incorrectly. I realize the shooting didn’t happen on the bus, but after they got off. But the argument happened on the bus. Someone has had to have seen that go down.

      • JanS August 11, 2018 (8:17 pm)

did you ever stop to think that maybe the SPD is not telling you all they know. That’s something that happens often, I bet. It might be  for only a “need to know” basis. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  • Timesareachangin' August 11, 2018 (5:47 am)

Everyone on that bus even the driver saw what started this but did nothing or will not say anything to the police I know for a fact because a few weeks ago 2 friends from work were on a different bus and some guy acting “weird” tried grabbing one of their backpacks the 2 girls were screaming help us while they were fighting this guy off while he was  punching and kicking them, no one not even the driver helped, all the driver did was stop at his next stop and the guy got off yelling the girls had a gun and he was trying to help everyone on the bus.  So what I’m getting at is that people are so scared or just don’t want to get involved and it’s so sad that we as a society are at that point…

    • WSB August 11, 2018 (11:58 am)

I don’t know what led you to suggest that but since you did … no, he’s been in jail since March.

  • Elle Nell August 11, 2018 (12:44 pm)

Reading this just makes it more clear that Seattle is changing in many more ways than I had even thought before.First off, the micro aggressions are atrocious on this thread. Unfortunately, trying to call out bigots on here does not really work. As folks hide behind there screens. Secondly, I have been here my whole life and what we do here is CO-EXSIST. What that means is that, we live with others and allow others to be who they are. We may not like the way they are or agree with how they live BUT we CO-EXSIST. If you do feel unsafe, by all means make a safer move BUT I’m so sick of this idea that ALL neighborhood have to live up to these entitled expectations. Get real. Learn to live together or you never will never know peace…

    • Ws prayers August 11, 2018 (5:24 pm)

It’s the how…how to coexist that is the question-so much division lack of care for life and yes anger-I want my son to be safe and be a safe person it is a constant battle in our society to treat people the way we would want to be treated -messages thro songs the media the internet schools it is a different time -morales values have changed jufgements and resentments as fear is prevalent -how …do we coexist in safety and without anger and fear it’s gotta change top down-people who can speak please speak get involved the more silence -the more we ignore-more we judge gossip rant won’t bring change-be the change

  • Lottie August 12, 2018 (1:46 pm)

Why go to walgreens when I can go to rite aid or bartells and no one is loitering and drinking and screaming in the parking lot. I will avoid that situation and intersection- and I do not believe I am a racist.

  • Cause Haun August 13, 2018 (4:39 pm)

If you’re feeling helpless about preventing gun violence in West Seattle and everywhere, please know that there IS a part you can play in the solution. Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action are working to promote responsible gun storage and common sense gun laws. Everyone is welcome at our next meeting, next Tuesday the 21st, 6-7:30 pm at Admiral UCC.

The church is ADA Accessible, however restrooms are not. Look forward to seeing you there!  RSVP helpful but not required: https://bit.ly/2KjDahP

    • Ws prayers August 15, 2018 (10:37 am)

I really feel a need to be part of a solution but I don’t own any guns so is this just about owning a gun safety? I don’t want anything to do with them-just wondering if it would be relevant to attend thank you

Sorry, comment time is over.
