10:49 PM: Seattle Police and Fire are on the scene of an incident involving a motorcycle rider at 12th SW and SW Thistle in Highland Park [map]. The rider will be taken to the hospital via Seattle Fire medic unit and is reported to have “significant trauma.”

11:34 PM: Just back from the scene. Photo added. The motorcyclist crashed on the north (westbound) side of SW Thistle between 12th SW and 13th SW. SFD medics were still working to stabilize him before leaving for Harborview. We weren’t able to talk with police but have learned more via the scanner – according to medics, the rider is reported to be around 50 years old, and believed to have crashed at high speed and been thrown at least 50 feet.

Unfortunately he was not able to recover from his injuries. His family will be removing him from life support in the morning.

I am so sorry to hear that. I couldn’t get official information about his condition today because I don’t know his name, so we appreciate the update. – TR

WSB- his name is Joel Eggert. He will indeed be removed from life support tomorrow. The Seattle music community is crushed, as he was a huge supporter of local music and a fixture in West Seattle, known as The King of West Seattle to many. We will likely have a memorial soon at one of the local venues.

Slow down! For your own sake or someone else.

Most definitely a mostly very quiet side street that’s not at all close to a high speed. Darn! I walk this area often with my dog almost daily. My thoughts go out to his family. Slow down folks for your own life as well as others.

Don’t make it out like he was speeding at a “high rate “. If he were speeding he likely would have gone much further than 50ft unless he hit something else that stopped him after impact. Maybe he was trying to dodge an animal or lost control on ice – since it was really cold out . I don’t feel like this was operator error . Something must have happened.  Very sad news and such a great man who had many people that loved him. The news always likes to blame the biker before having all the details.

Joel was my best friend of 30 years. I will miss him every day of my life. There are a ton of “shoulda coulda woulda’s” but this isn’t the place to dicuss that. This man was a better man than anybody I’ve ever met. Please support his kids:  https://www.gofundme.com/32q3at4
