UPDATE: Motorcycle rider to hospital after 35th/Juneau collision

image

8:07 AM: Breaking this out from morning traffic watch: A motorcycle-minivan crash on the west side of the 35th/Juneau intersection has sent the rider to the hospital with serious injuries. Juneau is blocked west of 35th. A woman and baby in the minivan were unhurt. A Good Samaritan stayed with the rider until help arrived and, we’re told, became a victim herself when someone ran off with her backpack.

8:46 AM: Just went past the scene again on the way back to HQ from checking out something else. Juneau is no longer closed west of 35th. The minivan had not yet been towed, so that might cause some delays on the southbound side of 35th at some point soon. We will be contacting Harborview this morning to see if we can find out how the rider is doing.

1:39 PM: So far we haven’t been able to get information from Harborview (without the rider’s name), but I SFD spokesperson Capt. Shata Stephenson tells us the rider is “approximately 19 years old) and that her injuries were NOT life-threatening.

Thank you to the Good Samaritan and that really sucks about the backpack!

  • smokeycretin9 October 27, 2016 (8:23 am)

Really West Seattle?  Steal from someone helping another?

  • Michelle October 27, 2016 (8:41 am)

C’mon West Seattle…we’re better than this. Stealing a Good Samaritan’s belongings as she’s assisting another in need?

  • ClayJustSayin October 27, 2016 (9:13 am)

I wish upon the person who took the backpack: no more even breaks for life.  Ever again. You don’t even get to know why.

  • SaraB October 27, 2016 (9:24 am)

So sorry for the good samaritan!  That intersection needs a stop light.

This is the woman that got her backpack stolen. It had my laptop and wallet in it. I’m just worried about he motorcyclist. She was badly injured. I’ll be checking the blog to follow up on her recovery.

ANG – thank you for helping, and bless you for putting your concern for the person hurt ahead of your loss.  I hope the motorcyclist heals quickly, and that the scumbag who stole your backpack gets caught and you get your things back!

As a person that works on 35th I can definitely say that we need speed traps here on this street very badly and have for a long time not seat belt enforcement actual speed traps there used to be ones regularly at Camp long where have they been the last 3 years

As someone who lives a block off 35th, I am saddened by the accident, but not surprised with the way people drive on this road. I was trying to cross yesterday morning to get to my bus-stop, and someone sped by me going 45 (according to the speed reader next to me) in the pouring rain. Nice.

I truly hope the motorcyclist recovers, and the good samaritan for helping and comforting the victim.

I believe the road diet will help keep this road and the people who live in the community safe, even if it takes a few minutes longer to get through.

Any tips on motorcyclist? I know a female rider that takes that route and can’t get a hold of her.

    • WSB October 27, 2016 (11:04 am)

WSG – I don’t have a name or even age. I have an inquiry out to Harborview but don’t know if they’ll be able to get the info for me – if they can, I’ll add it here.

I agree D and EH.  I am surprised more accidents don’t occur at these intersections.  As someone who walks, drives, and drives (and lives) on 35th this makes me angry, tired and then sad, in that order.  Drivers on 35th and drivers turning onto 35th need to be MUCH more cautious.  I have been nearly hit while out jogging three time in intersections between Graham, Raymond, and Juneau all in the past 3 months.  Cars seeking to turn right onto 35th often only look Left to check oncoming traffic but do not even glance right to see if a pedestrian is entering the road at the curb cut.  Slow down folks, and get your head outta your asses, er… celphones, while out driving.

    • Oakley34 October 27, 2016 (10:51 am)

mean to say walks, drives, and *jogs*…oop

  • Wsgal October 27, 2016 (11:04 am)

Ok-even a general description would help.

  • ClayJustSayin October 27, 2016 (11:30 am)

This intersection is fine the way it is.  All people have to do is watch where they are going, and don’t be in a hurry.  That works for every intersection.  Put tax money into driver training instead of adding lights to every single corner.  I hope the rider will be OK!

    • WSB October 27, 2016 (11:36 am)

As pointed out in the boards from last August’s update meeting on 35th SW – see page 7: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/docs/35th_Phase12_Boards%2008-04-2016.pdf – “A new signal or turn restrictions with a new pedestrian crossing are being examined to address a history of serious left turn collisions” at the intersection. A motorcycle/car collision in 2011 at this intersection killed the rider. – TR

saying that this intersection is just fine, and drivers just need to stop speeding, be more cautious, etc., is  a nice saying, but it’s never going to happen. How many people have already bitched  about the road diet on the south end, and are now complaining that they are thinking to do the same for the north end of 35th SW.  It is truly still I-35 when they get past the road diet.  Leaving it up to the drivers to obey the speeding law is simply futile.

  • PG October 27, 2016 (12:05 pm)

If I’m not mistaken, there has also been a serious injury accident recent in the part of 35th with the road diet.  Better signals, better enforcement, better lighting and an education campaign seem like more effective routes than just taking away lanes.

    • WSB October 27, 2016 (12:15 pm)

35th/Juneau is a known trouble spot (and has had an educational campaign, enforcement, etc. over the years we’ve been covering it). But to your other point, our archives show no crashes with SFD Medic unit transport on the south-of-Morgan section of 35th in the past year. (Private ambulance = non-major injury.) If you know of one with Medic unit transport, meaning serious/major injury, please cite the approximate time frame and cross street and I will be happy to look up the SFD/SPD records to see if somehow (unlikely but not impossible) it’s something we missed. Thanks! – TR

I was the witness (had the backpack stolen). The woman was in her 20’s or early 30’s. Petite body frame. Caucasian female. She attends classes or is study for courses at UW. I have her name if you want to contact me.

Ang–thank you for your good work and I hope you get your things back and that your data is safe!

  • WSB October 27, 2016 (1:39 pm)

I am adding this to the story above as well, but – while HMC apparently can’t tell me anything without a name, SFD spokesperson Capt. Shata Stephenson says the rider was “approximately 19 years old) and that her injuries were NOT life-threatening.

  • Deadfrog October 27, 2016 (3:27 pm)

PNW Riders group has a post about her.
