What’s up for your West Seattle Tuesday

(Great Blue Heron, photographed by Mark Wangerin)

The calendar tends to quiet as Labor Day approaches, but we have a few things to highlight:

ONE MONTH TO APPLY! The deadline for artist/craft vendors to apply for the Fauntleroy Fine Art and Gift Show is now exactly one month away, September 30th. Details are in our calendar listing.

TUESDAY TAI CHI: 6 pm at Alki Beach Park – weather permitting – it’s the new Tuesday night edition of free Saturday Tai Chi with Lao-Shi Caylen Storm. (60th/Alki)

NEW ORLEANS ROADHOUSE & HONKY-TONK JAZZ: That’s the description of what Joe Ross and The Bird Watchers will be playing tonight at Parliament Tavern in The Admiral District, 8 pm, no cover. (4210 SW Admiral Way)

BABY KETTEN KARAOKE: 9 pm at The Skylark, it’s karaoke “with flattering sound systems, songs that you actually want to sing but can’t find anywhere, and magical song slips that self destruct if ‘Grease megamix’ is written on them.” (3803 Delridge Way SW)

SEE THE FUTURE … via our full WSB West Seattle Event Calendar (where you’ll also see how to send an event to be listed).

That’s the type of bird that visits our backyard daily and recently has been leaving feathers, hope that’s OK (shedding feathers) but boy when it takes off it looks like a dinosaur bird it’s so big!

Does the heron only use one leg to stand?

SC, I can’t speak specifically about herons or wild birds in general, but with my knowledge from back when I had a parrot, a bird standing on one leg is generally a sign of good health, as it indicates the bird is strong enough to do so.  I don’t recall if/what a specific reason is for a bird to do so, other than to perhaps be relaxing.

Of course, especially with a wild bird, there is always the chance that a bird may have only one leg, due to illness/ injury, or perhaps being born as such.

I remember being down at Seacrest several years ago, standing there looking out over the bay and enjoying the view, and a seagull was standing on the railing on one leg, I didn’t think much of it, until I looked closer and saw that it only had one leg.

I know nothing about birds, but I can google. Apparently standing on one leg reduces heat loss.

IF YOU APPRCIATE AND CARE FOR THE WELFARE OF WATEFOWL LIKE THIS THEN TAKE A MOMENT OR AN HOUR AND RESCUE MICRO LITTER FROM ENTERING ITS FOOD SOURCE, PUGET SOUND. AS SOMEONE WHO IS CONSTANTLY IN AND AROUND THE CURBLINE IN SEATTLE AS  BOTH AS A DELIVERY DRIVER AND ON MY BICYCLE I AM INCREASING APPALED BY THE CONSTANT AMOUNT OF LITTER ON OUR STREETS AND WHEN THE FIRST RAINS HAPPEN OVER AN INCH ALL THAT DEBRIS OR A GOOD PORTION ENDS UP IN PUGET SOUND AND ALONG THE SHORELINE WHERE YOU CAN SEE BLUE HERON LIKE THE ONE ABOVE. IT DESERVES BETTER FROM US!  ON A LOCAL NOTE WITH OUR GROWTH HERE IT WILL ONLY INCREASE UNLESS WE START ORGANIZING LITTER COLLECTION INCTHE SUMMER MONTHS AND BEYOND. TWO TO THREE MONTHS FROM NOW ALOT BECOMES HIDDEN BY FALLING LEAVES. LETS TAKE ACTION WEST SEATTLE!

If your anything like me ,although I do take personal action on it, it is difficult to get the motivation to grab the standup dustpan or trash grabber and go out picking up litter around here you. That’s where you reading this come into play so where do we start? Suggestions?

The irony of losing the plastic shopping bags is that I used to carry them around in my backpack -All the Time.  Going to Alki turned into a trash hunt in which I could collect trash until I filled up bag and then dump it into a sturdy trash can (not the kind that spill over).  Now if I want to help out, I have to carry gross stuff around until I can dump it.  Not as efficient.

Sorry, comment time is over.
