BIZNOTE: Celtic Swell now Alki Beach Pub

IMG_2563
West Seattle once had two Irish pubs; now, it has none. The Celtic Swell on Alki has changed its name to Alki Beach Pub. Its ownership changed sometime back, but the name stayed through St. Patrick’s Day. The old name has been removed on the awning and the new one is on a blackboard by the door (as shown in our photo), noting also that it has a new menu and is “family-friendly until 8 pm, last minors served at 7:15.”

Well, not really noteworthy as it was barely Irish to begin with. Mainly just a ploy to serve over-priced Guinness to the beach bros. What I wouldn’t give for a traditional Irish pub on the peninsula!

It’s all about location, and they have a great one. I especially like the window view in the winter (like any good local, my attendance decreases in the summer…) Yeah, they could learn to serve a better cocktail (they struggled over a simple Old Fashioned not too long ago), but for beer and bar fare it’s hard to beat.

Hopefully they don’t change things too much. It still has that authentic, “not-too-nice” West Seattle charm to it. Seriously! Please don’t screw it up with fancy menus and other “improvements.”

I look forward to your next evolution!

Tried to go to the Celtic Swell after the St Patty’s Day Dash and was disappointed they were closed.  This was our hang out after the run last year.  Sorry to see the name change  Celtic Swell has a stronger Irish influence than the Alki Beach Pub.  Good luck to them-jury is out…

I spent a few long weeks in Ireland last year and based on that experience, I’d say the Celtic Swell was pretty close to what I experienced there pub wise.  Most of the pubs off the beaten path were similar in that they weren’t that nice yet still maintained a cozy, dare I say charming, atmosphere?  I’d also venture my opinion that the food was much better at the Celtic Swell.  My wife and I will miss it, we should have gone more often.

Celtic Swell used to have good food, drinks and service. That went downhill years ago and I stopped going. I wonder if the new place will be any better?

Pouring a few Irish beers and having a few Irish-esque designs painted on the wall does not make a room an Irish pub. This place is nothing more than an overly-expensive beach-side pub.

No loss. Welcome to the new proprietors.
