ELECTION UPDATE: Lisa Herbold still slightly ahead of Shannon Braddock in City Council District 1 race

Almost two weeks after Election Day, the Seattle City Council District 1 (West Seattle/South Park) winner isn’t decided yet. The county doesn’t certify the election for eight more days and just went public with another count. It’s the second consecutive count with a lead for Lisa Herbold:

Lisa Herbold – 12,402 – 49.74%
Shannon Braddock – 12,367 – 49.60%

The 35-vote lead is up from Herbold’s 27-vote lead on Friday. The full-results list shows 27,629 votes have been counted in this race; that’s the total number of “ready to count” ballots listed in the county’s last “ballot returns” list, but 373 ballots fewer than the total number received from District 1. The race remains within recount range.

Friday there were 165 write ins. Today there are 163. Why did write ins go down by 2 ballots? Just curious.

    Friday write-ins were 162; .65%

    A few takeaways:
    1) Neither candidate received even 50% of the vote, which includes fewer than 50% of registered voters in West Seattle. In my opinion that latter percentage says more about the adult (potential voter) population of West Seattle than about the candidates.
    2) The difference between the two candidates today is 0.14%. I wish I could even shave that close.
    3) This election has to be headed for a recount, so no one should celebrate or hang their heads any time soon.
    4) Whoever comes out on top should not take it as a bold mandate to ignore the other side’s priorities or perspectives during their term on the city council.

@onion 2) the difference between the two candidates is 0.14%

However, the campaign expenditure was not the same for this close a result.

Yes, agree the voter turnout dismally appalling!

    RE Onion item 4:
I am unaware of much difference between the two. Seems to be a matter of political backers. I prefer Lisa for her deep knowledge of Seattle politics but strongly support Dow – who endorsed Shannon.

Sorry, comment time is over.
