West Seattle whale watching: Sighting near Fauntleroy ferry dock; northbound at sunset

5:08 PM: Via Orca Network on Twitter and Facebook, “Washington State Ferries reports a large whale, probably a humpback, off the Fauntleroy dock in West Seattle.” Please let us know if you see it (and which way it seems to be heading)!

6:50 PM: Sheri reports, via Twitter, that she just saw it dive off Lincoln Park, and that it’s heading north.

My son and I were fishing at the point by Colman Pool, it cruised by 50′ out from the flagpole as the sun was setting. Spray, back, tail. It was pretty awesome.

I saw a large whale – grey or humpback — of Lowman Beach Park around 7PM.

Saw just the tail this morning at Alki near the picnic shelter between 10:30 and 11:00. It was heading east.

Does anyone know if whales this large typically come this deep into the Sound? I thought they were more ‘open ocean’ whales.

I was on the Fauntleroy ferry on my way to Vashon island, front car in the lane on Saturday, around 5 PM. First, I saw the tail, quickly got out of my car, and saw a full breach. It must have been 50 – 100 feet in front of the boat. Everyone quickly rushed out of their cars to the front of the boat. I JUST missed snapping a pic.

Sorry, comment time is over.
