UPDATE: Two children hospitalized in intensive care after falling from window

(UPDATED FRIDAY AFTERNOON with children’s condition – scroll down)
6:54 PM: Major medical response under way right now at 34th and Morgan – two children are injured and being rushed to Harborview. Scanner traffic indicates a fall from a window.

7 PM: We’ve arrived at the scene. This is actually closer to 34th and Holly and apparently happened in an alley behind a cluster of townhouses on the west side of 34th.

7:04 PM: Via Twitter, SFD confirms a 1-year-old boy and 2 year-old boy fell about 30 feet from a window and are both in serious condition.

7:10 PM: SFD medic units have now rushed both children to Harborview and the remaining SFD units are clearing from the scene.

9:19 PM: We’re not likely to get any further information tonight but will follow up tomorrow.

2:11 PM FRIDAY: We’ve just heard back from Harborview Medical Center, with whom we inquired this morning in hopes of getting an update on the boys. An HMC spokesperson tells WSB they are both in intensive care, both still listed in serious condition.

Omg! We heard all the sirens and were wondering what was going on. Poor kids!! How horrific. As a parent I can’t even imagine. I hope they will be okay!

Hugs and prayers for the children and their family.

I live half a block away, I almost went over over to check. As a father of an 8 month old and 3 year old I cannot even imagine. I’m not religious but I’m praying for those children!

  • Mom2 August 20, 2015 (7:20 pm)

Pray those beautiful children will be ok.

  • Kim August 20, 2015 (7:25 pm)

We also live on the block, that was a huge fire response. We are very sad for our neighbors, I hope the two children will be ok!

  • Rob August 20, 2015 (7:57 pm)

I also live on the block. Two lessons here: Window Safety (a screen will not stop a child from falling) and know First Aid, especially for infants and toddlers.

  • Mb August 20, 2015 (9:01 pm)

I pray those babies are ok!! How scary I can’t imagine. I have a little that age.

  • Tiff August 20, 2015 (9:05 pm)

That’s unimaginable. I’m always so scared of our daughter and the balcony in our townhome. I hope the children fully recover.

I will pray hard for these two. I moved from West Seattle last year. When i did live there my two year old almost fell from our apartment window. The most scariest moment in my life.

Any update on the kids? We’ve been worried about them

    • WSB August 21, 2015 (10:57 am)

I have a query out to Harborview, although whether they’ll be able to tell me anything without names – or even with, given medical privacy laws – I don’t know. But we’ll update if we find out anything further.

as a child safety specialist, this makes me insane; this happens way too often (talk to any doc at Harborview) but rarely gets reported; thanks to wsblog for the coverage; especially in summer months in Seattle, when families open windows for cool air; this happens a LOT; hope to god these babies survive and not injured too severely; hope everyone with young children will be more aware of the danger of windows on upper floors for young children; keep furniture away from windows; use window guards so windows can’t open wide enough for a child to fall/climb out

In this case, with two victims, it was a Multiple Medic Response 14 (referring to the size of the crews SFD must dispatch to handle two potentially gravely injured/ill people, twice the size of a “Med 7”) and impossible to *not* cover … if you’re not listening closely to the scanner, and sometimes even if you are, it’s not always possible to figure out the nature of an incident that might be labeled simply “medic response” or “aid response,” and that would be why stories don’t follow. Anyway, I do need to say that we have no idea of the circumstances and might never know, since this isn’t a criminal investigation and therefore won’t necessarily yield any kind of report. No matter how closely you supervise children, they can get into trouble in the blink of an eye … I know this firsthand from a terrifying incident when my own child was very small. – TR

TR yes it is very hard to keep your eye on your children no matter how good of a parent you are, they are quick and I for one don’t blame these parents and hope and pray these children heal quickly.

Praying that these children and their parents are surrounded by the strength and protection of a thousand angel wings.

Thank you, WSB, for the update. Please keep us posted on the boys’ conditions and please let us know if there’s anything we can do for the family.

I’m a neighbor and friend of the couple whose toddlers fell from the third-story window of their home in West Seattle on Thursday night. They are currently attending to the recovery of their children in the hospital, so they were unable to respond to requests for updates on their status, but they were touched by the outpouring of community concern and asked if I would provide a brief statement on their behalf. After their fall, both boys experienced significant injuries, with the younger of the two initially in more serious condition. However, miraculously, it now appears that their condition has stabilized and that both boys could eventually make a full recovery. For the time being, they are being held in intensive care and remain under close observation as they undergo treatment for their injuries. However, after a terrifying night, their parents are now feeling more optimistic. Those wishing to help the family financially as they manage medical expenses and recover from this traumatic event may do so here:http://dm2.gofund.me/xs2h7tyg

    Sincerely,

    Tim
