West Seattle windstorm update: Power back on to all but a handful as of midafternoon

(SCROLL DOWN FOR NEWEST INFO! And in case you need these, City Light outage hotline 206-684-3000 **** Click for mobile version of SCL outage map)

(Updated City Light map screengrab, as of 2:10 am)
1:40 AM: After midnight, the wind kicked up, as the National Weather Service had warned it was likely to do. There’s word of a tree down at a house in the 1300 block of Alki SW and possibly a slide too. (Added: Photo from Suzanne, showing one of the firefighters who were working on the downed trees in that area:)

And power’s starting to go out around the city – including the first West Seattle power outage report, in the Fauntleroy/Lincoln Park area. We’re watching the map. (added) Just got texts from Arbor Heights and north White Center about power woes there too. Let us know in comments or via text (206-293-6302) what’s up where you are.

1:45 AM: The southwest-end outages are now on the City Light map. We’ll add a screengrab – or, wait, maybe not yet; just got a text from Admiral.

1:56 AM: The Admiral outage is on the map as a small pocket, 9 customers; from Gatewood through Fauntleroy and into Arbor Heights/Arroyos, more than 4,700 customers (homes/businesses) are out.

2:07 AM: Map has now added a pocket of 100+ customers out in The Junction, and the Admiral pocket has grown to about that same number. We’ll change the screengrab. Note we have added the City Light outage hotline AND link to mobile version of the outage map, atop this story.

2:26 AM: The National Weather Service upgraded the alert to a “high wind warning” (see it here) as of about 20 minutes ago, in effect through 8 am. Our area’s holding at about 5,000 customers without power, just under half the SCL total. The “estimated time” for restoration is 8 am but keep in mind, that’s always just a guesstimate, could be earlier or later.

3:17 AM: SCL now blames a tree, somewhere, for the biggest West Seattle outage, the 4,700-customer outage in Morgan/Gatewood/Fauntleroy/Arbor Heights/beyond. The wind’s been much calmer the past hour or so, at least from our listening spot.

3:37 AM: About a quarter of those in the biggest outage zone apparently have their power back – the count has dropped from 4,700 to 3,600. By the way, no reports of any injuries so far into all this.

5:57 AM: Checking on SCL’s progress – the big West Seattle outage (now attributed to equipment failure) has halved again, now fewer than 2,000 (looks like the latest chunk of restored customers happened around 5 am). The Admiral and Junction pockets (~100 each, now blamed on trees) are still out. If you are out and don’t see your area included on the map, be sure to notify SCL at 206-684-3000 to make sure they know.

7:24 AM: Looks like no additional West Seattle restoration in the past hour and a half – still just over 2,000 customers out, and the estimate is now “pending.” Via Twitter, SCL says the main problem with which they’re dealing now, here and elsewhere in the city, is downed lines, including one near 44th/Roxbury.

8:32 AM: In terms of businesses affected, looking at the current outage map, it doesn’t look like many are still out BUT the Endolyne/Fauntleroy mini-business district appears to be in the outage zone. We are off to check and will add whatever we find. Meantime, Ocean View has lost power again, according to a text. And we’re sticking this story to the top of the site, but if you scroll BENEATH it, you’ll see our list of “what’s up today” including game-related changes and places to watch – or, click here.

8:37 AM: In all, 5,000 **more** homes/businesses just lost power, so we have 7,000 total in West Seattle. ***UPDATE*** Within minutes, that area (southeast West Seattle, White Center) got it back, though the SCL map doesn’t reflect yet.

9:17 AM: Now out and about. Went to Fauntleroy/Endolyne first, spotted City Light crews:

Power in that area JUST came back on but Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor) tells us they won’t be ready for customers until about 11. Next door, The Original Bakery is closed because of the outage – they can’t simply reopen now because as the sign says, they lost their early-morning baking time:

9:49 AM: Spotted City Light at the Junction outage scene too, on SW Oregon:

According to commenters, both the Junction and Admiral outage pockets (less than 200 customers each) were caused by trees taking out wires/lines in alleys. (Added below: Photo from Gina, showing the Admiral scene. Thanks also to Sarah for sending one.)

10:42 AM: The entire southwest area is now back on, according to the map, texters, and commenters. Now it’s down to the 300 or so residences in the Junction and Admiral pockets, neither of which appears to be affecting businesses.

12:04 PM: Game time, and the number of West Seattle customers still out after 11+ hours is down to 114, per City Light.

3:36 PM: Just a handful still out, per SCL. The weather is continuing to calm, according to the forecast, but there was a bit of thunder about half an hour ago. (No, it was NOT from the stadium, but might as well have been, given what was happening in the game right about then!)

    Power out in Faintlee Hills…

  • pelicans January 18, 2015 (1:47 am)

Tracy, you just answered my question I posted in the forum section. I saw the glows from the power going out near Fauntleroy. Should’ve checked here first. It was pretty spectacular. West Point weather station recorded a 39mph gust not too long ago…

  • rob January 18, 2015 (1:48 am)

We’re in the dark in arbor heights at 36th and 102nd. Don’t know how far west it goes, but can see lights on the other side of 35th. Power went off and briefly came back. Saw a bright flash during that, so I imagine a tree branch fell on a line nearby.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (1:51 am)

Thanks for the updates. The City Light map has caught up with Fauntleroy/Arbor Heights/etc. but no place north yet, though I have a text from 45th/Walker. Somehow here in Upper Fauntleroy we have been spared so far … but as always we have the backup power and mi-fi standing by just in case … I think I have one more battery to go charge …

  • Ray January 18, 2015 (1:50 am)

Lights flickering since 12:45am. Lots of wind and flying garbage can lids. Delridge/Westwood area.

  • thermo January 18, 2015 (1:56 am)

Out on 45th hemlock way just off of rose and Fauntleroy. Cpap turned off and I couldn’t breathe, lol. I can see lights a couple blocks north from upper bedroom.

  • Kristen January 18, 2015 (1:57 am)

Out at Marine View Drive and 106th. Lights went off right as I was giving my sister a 12th Manicure (Seahawks nails) for tomorrow’s game! :/

  • Westgirl January 18, 2015 (1:58 am)

Just heard a huge pop. Power out near the Junction

  • ACG January 18, 2015 (2:06 am)

Oh no… Out in AH like you have reported. Called it in and the recorded message said anticipated restoration time of power is 8 am. Let’s hope they are right! Need power to watch the game! GO HAWKS!!

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (2:09 am)

ACG – my standard reminder, the estimated time of restoration is always just an estimate. Last few outages, it was much quicker. Of course, those were NOT widespread outages like this. But hold out a good thought. If some outages persist into the morning, we’ll do our best to list where you can go watch the game :) Feedback Lounge (sponsor) and Highland Park Improvement Club come to mind immediately but there are many more … TR

  • Darcy January 18, 2015 (2:06 am)

I’m on 37th & Andover and heard a loud explosion about 10 min ago. It was so close, it sounded like it was in my backyard. Haven’t lost power though..

  • Whoooaaa January 18, 2015 (2:07 am)

Wow, at 1:50am we are awakened by a “POP POP POP BANG!” Through our window we see a bright orange flash and then our power went out. So scary! 41st and Oregon.

  • Jason January 18, 2015 (2:07 am)

There are a couple of branches hanging on the highest wires right here at 45th and Concord. We woke up to a big flash, and then saw another flash a little bit later farther down 45th.

  • Westgirl January 18, 2015 (2:13 am)

I’ve contacted City Light for the block on 40th and Oregon. This is the first time we’ve lost power in the 6 years that we’ve lived in WS!

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (2:14 am)

Really! The pattern tonight, er, this morning, does look a little unusual. I don’t want to jinx it but the fact our little corner of Upper Fauntleroy is still on though many west, north, and south of us are out, is unusual. We lose power at least a couple times a year.

  • ACG January 18, 2015 (2:14 am)

Thanks, TR- you’re the best! :)

  • Westgirl January 18, 2015 (2:18 am)

Our lights always just flash on and off when there’s a storm. Hope it’s restored before the big game. Go Hawks!!

  • ahgirl January 18, 2015 (2:23 am)

no lights looking at vashon. maury and burien. a couple flickers at three tree pt. pretty dark south sound from our view and wind sounds like it is groaning

  • Mana January 18, 2015 (2:44 am)

Interesting! We’re in the City Watch Apartments (Jefferson Square-ish) and our kitchen and living room are out, but our two bedrooms and one bathroom are plugging along just fine. Our internet is down, but my mobile hotspot through Verizon is working. Weird storm.

  • Diane January 18, 2015 (3:31 am)

Power just came back on at Fauntleroy and Othello

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (3:39 am)

Yay! I just noticed on the map that about a quarter of those in the big outage zone seem to be back. Didn’t know if anyone was still awake to notice.

  • Myles January 18, 2015 (3:44 am)

It’s 3:40AM. Wind broke my flag holder off side of house this morning. Seahawk flag is down. Can’t sleep, I will be heading to lowes in few hours to get new bracket. GO HAWKS !!!!!! oh, I still have power in Fairmont Park.

  • Janvp January 18, 2015 (3:46 am)

    Power out in lower Fauntleroy

  • In The Dark January 18, 2015 (3:53 am)

Did SCL give you an estimated time for getting electrical service up and running, Tracy? Still in the dark in Arbor Heights…and of course stocked the fridge yesterday :(

Thanks for being awake and covering the storm!

  • In The Dark January 18, 2015 (3:57 am)

Clicked the map. Service in Arbor Heights should return before 7am.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (4:01 am)

Remember, that’s just an estimate … can be longer … but may well be shorter. The folks who just got theirs back around 3:30 am had been part of the 8 am “guesstimate.”

  • Cewood January 18, 2015 (4:24 am)

out in brace point. Totally missed hearing the high wind alert. Hoping it will Be back on by noon-Go Hawks!

  • Kristi January 18, 2015 (6:56 am)

  • Joe January 18, 2015 (7:01 am)

They told me everyone without service is down till 1030am-11am.

  • Brian M. January 18, 2015 (7:06 am)

Lower Fauntleroy is still out. Wrapped up like a burrito in bed.

  • Cewood January 18, 2015 (7:13 am)

    Still out in brace point

  • Ds January 18, 2015 (7:23 am)

Power still out at 39th and 104th

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (7:32 am)

Thanks – we’re continuing to add periodic updates above; still 2,000 out, of the original 5,000, and it’s been six hours now. No time estimate for restoration.

  • AH January 18, 2015 (7:47 am)

Still out 98th & California. Many thanks to awesome WSB for coverage!

  • jeanette January 18, 2015 (7:57 am)

Here at 9211 35 th ave sw no power still…did they say 11:00 am…my poor fish

  • D-Mom January 18, 2015 (8:01 am)

Power is back in Arbor Heights, but cable is out. I just called Comcast and they’re aware of the outage. I hope they get it working before all the Hawks fans have to scramble to make other plans.

  • Schwaggy January 18, 2015 (8:02 am)

As far as I can tell, no crews have even been in the alley between 40th & 41st off Oregon where a tree fell and took out the pole and lines. We have lines strewn over 3 houses (not live wires). I would estimate the Junction outage will be long as a new pole is going to be required here.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (8:08 am)

Thanks for the location note, Schwaggy – we’re going out to look around in a bit now that the sun’s up. They still have almost 9,000 customers out citywide and if you look at the outage map, dozens of separate outages adding up to that, which means a lot of places to do repairs …

  • CEA January 18, 2015 (8:06 am)

First thing I did upon waking a few minutes ago – checked the WSB! Thanks for watching out for us and sharing reports through the night. One of the best things about living in West Seattle is you guys!

  • Greg January 18, 2015 (8:09 am)

Let’s cut to the important part, who is going to let people come watch the game? The Bridge can’t hold all 2000 customers.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (8:13 am)

I’m working on a list and appreciate recommendations. So far we have The Bridge, The Westy, Feedback Lounge, all 21+, plus Talarico’s and HPIC, all ages.

  • In The Dark January 18, 2015 (8:15 am)

Any updates on businesses opened/closed? Is Westwood Village operating? ETA for cable service?

  • eMac January 18, 2015 (8:17 am)

No power at 37th and 99th. Anyone know the new estimate? I need coffee.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (8:26 am)

eMac – there’s no new estimate, unfortunately. Re: that and whether businesses are closed, that’s why we’re heading out here in a couple minutes. In the Dark – the outage map does NOT show Westwood in the affected area, and in fact, it doesn’t appear many business zones are in the currently affected area *except* (as Carol notes) Endolyne/Fauntleroy’s mini-business area just south/SE of the ferry dock. We’re going to check there first, to see how Joe’s and Original Bakery are doing.

  • Carol kennison January 18, 2015 (8:20 am)

  • Sue January 18, 2015 (9:26 am)

Just woke up to no power for my overhead lights, fridge, and heat. All the outlets are working though. The hallway outside my apartment has full power though. Weird how it’s divided like this. Seems to have been out for a while as the fridge is not cold. I’m near Jefferson Square.

  • miws January 18, 2015 (9:28 am)

I was part of the short-lived “east” outage. First, IIRC. in 25 months here.

    .

Texted WSB, got a game of Spider Solitaire going since no internet, called SCL Hotline and went through all the prompts to report/get info. They said they were aware, and power would be restored at 8:44. My first thought was OMG!! 12 hours!! Came back on at 8:41. So, I speculate, as someone mentioned upthread, maybe a power-down to restore elsewhere, or basically “resetting a breaker”.

    .

Would have made this comment here a few minutes earlier, but had to finish that game of Spider Solitaire! ;-)

    .

    Mike

  • Brrrrr January 18, 2015 (9:30 am)

    Power BACK ON — yes!!!! 106th & 39th

  • MQ January 18, 2015 (9:34 am)

Tree took down power lines in alley between 45th & 46th and between college & walker. Tree us blocking the alley and took down a fence. Called it in – SCL has no estimate on restoration- maybe some time as the tree needs to be cut and lines repaired

  • heather January 18, 2015 (9:35 am)

WSB – fully functional through wind, rain, disaster and zero sleep.

Wow. Talk about being on top of it.

Just got the requested “Update” automated message form SCL.

    .

This was my first time using the hotline, and I gotta give SCL kudos for the system. Like most everyone, presumably, I often find automated phone systems annoying, and/or confusing, and/or intimidating, and often not being able to easily get to the point related to resolving my question/issue.

    .

In calling the Hotline, the step-by-step was intuitive, and logical, plenty of options offered in a way that didn’t seem to take forever to get to the one I needed, and plenty of “to confirm” options for verifying stuff, like with the callback just now; after letting me know of the restoration, they asked me to confirm, rather than just assuming my address had restored power, because it was restored in the general area.

    .

Still out in Arbor Heights 37th & 97th

  • NG January 18, 2015 (9:44 am)

Still no power on east side 46th and Admiral!

  • Ben January 18, 2015 (9:48 am)

Power just came back on here…AH/97th St.

  • Paul January 18, 2015 (9:51 am)

Power is back on in Arbor Heights!

  • Steph January 18, 2015 (9:54 am)

I slept through the whole thing but did hear what sounded like an alarm at 2 am that said “High wind warning!” I am guessing that a weather alert was sent through the cell providers? Anyone else get it?

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (10:19 am)

Steph, we don’t have a weather alert on any devices BUT that is when the “high wind warning” was issued, as noted above. 2:06 am, to be precise!

  • anonyme January 18, 2015 (9:57 am)

Power just came back on at 35th & 100th at 9:45 am. This is getting frustrating. I lived on QA for 20 years and never had a power outage.

  • Sparky January 18, 2015 (10:14 am)

Sue near Jefferson Square: that sounds like either an internal problem, or just one of the three wires that serve your house got disconnected. It’s usually all on or all off. You might want to make sure there’s no wires down or tree limbs in your wires. If so, call SCL.

  • jeanette January 18, 2015 (10:20 am)

Power just went on at 9211 35th ave sw and have cable..thank goodness

  • wlcg06 January 18, 2015 (10:21 am)

If your power is back next step is to check you phone, cable, routers, etc. Might take a little time to reboot and had to give our Comcast system a little extra time to recover. 98th St is back in business — GO HAWKS!

  • NG January 18, 2015 (10:49 am)

Just got ahold of SCL and was told power will not be on until possibly 4pm. Location eastside of 46th and Admiral.

  • Sue January 18, 2015 (10:51 am)

@Sparky, I did call SPU and they said they’re working on it. We’re in an outage area shown on the map too. Large apt bldg, so I guess we lost some power but not all. No elevators either.

  • JCB January 18, 2015 (11:01 am)

Admiral outage now estimated for 3:43pm restore (14 hours), guess we will try to stream the game.

    Go Hawks by Candle Light!

  • V&T January 18, 2015 (11:07 am)

SCL are wounderful people! Power back up in the junction, on 41 north of Alaska!

  • ABC January 18, 2015 (11:27 am)

Does anybody have Comcast cable up and running? We live near the ferry. Really bummed to miss the game.

  • KP January 18, 2015 (11:59 am)

ABC – We live in lower Fauntleroy and our cable is working. Xfinity/Comcast. Came back immediately when the power returned.

  • sam-c January 18, 2015 (12:56 pm)

ABC_ you are not missing anything. this game sucks. It’s better that you not watch. enjoy your free Sunday afternoon
(e.t.a.) right now, I WISH my power would go out…

  • ABC January 18, 2015 (1:11 pm)

Thanks KP! Lucky you. Still out…decided to go to friends house for the game.

  • Mana January 18, 2015 (1:16 pm)

I tried to post in the early hours of morning and my comment was never posted…not sure why?

Anyway, as of 1:15pm, there is still no internet at 41st/Alaska.

    • WSB January 18, 2015 (1:30 pm)

Mana, I found it in the spam filter, so if you go back to 2:44, you’ll see it. Once in a while the spam filter grabs non-spam comments, never can tell why.

  • gina January 18, 2015 (1:24 pm)

Huge tree on power line at 45th 46th and College. City Light crews ready to go in when cleared. Thank goodness for Safeway WiFi! And the game on their tv. And heat!

  • Diane January 18, 2015 (2:23 pm)

Sue near Jefferson Square; did you check your breaker box? agree, when power goes out, it’s usually everything

  • Sue January 18, 2015 (2:58 pm)

Diane, first thing I checked. Definitely outage related, as it came back up with everyone else’s in the area.

  • Mana January 18, 2015 (4:33 pm)

Thanks for pulling it out! I wasn’t sure if I had done something wrong, so I appreciate that.

For what it’s worth, the internet came back very recently (~20min). It’s very spotty, but it’s at least there.

Sorry, comment time is over.
