West Seattle Health Club open, after 12-day ownership-change closure

After a 12-day closure, the fitness-center building at 2629 SW Andover did indeed open this morning as the West Seattle Health Club (thanks to the commenters who provided first word). If you’ve missed our ongoing coverage, this is the building previously long known as Allstar Fitness, then for about a year and a half as the West Seattle (Athletic) Club.

The owner of the latter, Sam Adams, facing an October 24th court-ordered deadline to pay $1.1 million (mostly back rent), closed it as of October 23rd (though signage only mentioned a two-day closure); documents in his personal Chapter 11 bankruptcy case indicate that he technically “rejected” continuing the lease as of October 27th. On Saturday, October 25th, it was announced that property owner John Pietromonaco had taken it over and would reopen it as a new club with a new name. The new club’s operations VP Dan Lehr told WSB last night that there would be a “skeleton class schedule” for starters, that child care would be available, and that the pool will remain closed for repair/renovations “for about two weeks.” For more backstory, our ongoing coverage is archived here, newest to oldest (we have just merged the archives of coverage so it traces all the way back to our first report on the Allstar bankruptcy two years ago).

ADDED 4 PM: The opening exercise schedule. (Please refer to the club’s website for further updates.)

I was there this morning, at 6AM, and it was pretty quiet with users but lots of repair activity going on (painters, electricians, etc) which is what I expected. There’s a lot of work that still needs to be done, but I’m willing to wait. They are not charging people to use the gym at this point, which is good because there’s very little to work with just yet. The women’s area was dark and is being used as a storage area. The bar has been taken out of the yoga studio so barre class will be different. There’s cardio and weights on the third floor and that seemed to be the only functioning part of the gym right now. Although, I did not check out the bikes so spin classes might be able to happen. All the yoga props are still in the closet so that’s a good sign. Overall, I think things are going in the right direction it’s just going to take time. I bet as we get closer to the new year, when gym memberships become priority for those with resolutions, the club will be in tip top condition.

No audio equipment in the studios, but the HVAC seems to be working. The place looks very clean. The employees working were all very nice, positive, and informative. The vibe is different, good.

  • WSJames November 4, 2014 (11:26 am)

Any mention of the “skeleton class schedule” or a new phone number for the club? :)

  • reid November 4, 2014 (12:25 pm)

Is the Emerald City Smoothie in there still up and running?

  • Fluffy November 4, 2014 (1:22 pm)

    I got a smoothie this morning ;)

  • Wes C. Adle November 4, 2014 (1:40 pm)

Emerald City Smoothie was up and running when I was there ~8 am.

  • Carol November 4, 2014 (2:17 pm)

I just went over to loook; as others commented, cardio, some spin bikes, weight machines, and free weights.
Here’s the class schedule for Wed:
    9:30 Yoga Flow with Deborah
    12:15 Power Yoga with Courtney
9:30 Cycle with Risa (go early, not that many bikes)
8: 00 am fit and Fabulous with Christine
11: strength and conditioning with Courtney
    4: survivor with Teri
5:25 pm: Total Body conditioning with Teri
6:30 Kick Mix with Laura S.

also have classes on Thursday and Friday

  • Sillygoose November 4, 2014 (2:20 pm)

YES!! I am excited to start working out here!!

  • mozabo November 4, 2014 (2:22 pm)

I went there this morning around 9:30. It was better than I expected. I was able to do all of my regular strength training. I was happy to see that most of the machines were there. I also did 30 minutes on an “old” spin bike that was working correctly. It was certainly quiet without music. It was nice to see the floors clean. Bathrooms still need more work done as the typical towel machine wasn’t working and the typical toilet was still out of order. One step at a time and I think they took one step forward so far with improvements.

So, is it a new member contract or how is that working? Anyone know?
This morning I called my bank and disputed the $73 I was charged 2 days prior to close..
I’m presuming new owner / new contract

  • LP November 4, 2014 (2:26 pm)

So is the womens gym area up and running? If not when?

  • LPA November 4, 2014 (2:28 pm)

Is the women’s gym open? If not any idea when?

  • jj November 4, 2014 (2:40 pm)

I went in this morning and I noticed several things. First… I didn’t realize how dirty the club WAS until I went in today and saw/smelled how clean it is. You just get used to it and now, things seem cleaner. So major kudos to the new manager for making that happen.
Third floor has maybe half the cardio equipment it normally had but they said the new stuff they bought is on the way. Same with the spin bikes in the spin room. What was left and working is in. The sound system is gone but if a good teacher could make do until it’s in. If you want to life, there is more than enough equipment to get that done.
It doesn’t look like anything is really in the works in the pool yet. There is a lift in there to start replacing lights and painting the ceiling but other than that, it looks exactly like the day the club closed including stuff still lingering in what’s left in the deep end.
When I left, they appeared to be disassembling the front desk. Not sure what that’s about but no big deal… it’s the front desk.
I walked away today thinking that if a club is clean… if everything is working… and if there is a positive vibe.. you are 95% there. If the new guy really puts his shoulder into it, the place could be back to its’ glory days of 10 years ago.

  • Brenda November 4, 2014 (2:58 pm)

Has anyone visited the childcare yet? Is it clean, safe, who is staffing? I am so excited for the gym to reopen!

  • John November 4, 2014 (3:18 pm)

I was there during lunchtime today and was pleasantly surprised. There were lots of people working to get the place up and running. It already smells and looks better than it has in years. The weights and cardio equipment are limited but worked great and they aren’t yet charging people. I am cautiously hopeful that this will once again be a great facility.

  • HB November 4, 2014 (3:54 pm)

So I went in today. I understand why and am happy they reopened early before they were ready, but if your going to open then a few things need to be in a gym (benches, adj. benches, light dumbells, different cable handles, etc). They didn’t have dumbells under 30 lbs. All of those things could have been bought at Sears for crying out loud until they got the new equipment in 2 weeks. They have 1 bench (yes- 1 bench press, 1 adjustable bench to use with dumbbells) and I couldn’t even imagine this place during a busy time of day as there is hardly any plates for 3-4 people in the gym let alone 40. And whoever organized and placed the gym equipment obviously does not work out. Horrible setup! Makes no sense! I had to move a few machines to even be able to use them.

For the person who asked, The childcare looked clean but not much different.

I am disappointed with the condition. Yes it looks clean, smells good, but I could care less about all that. If you are a guy/girl who just likes to use fitness machines and go through circuit then your good as it’s like a oversized curves now. I just want a real gym. A gym that caters to all types whether your a bodybuilder, casual, etc.

Again, I get new equipment is coming, the pool will be fixed in 3 weeks, but I really hope they don’t try and charge anyone or sign anyone up until this all comes in, because this is not a gym I’d pay for as of now. Ive been a member here a couple of different times for 3-4 years each time. And if they don’t reorganize the 3rd floor weights and make it more accessible and more organized I’m moving on to la fitness in burien (opens in December) until west Seattle opens up in March. I’d bet well over half of this gym does the same if these guys don’t act fast.

Fire the guy who reorganized this and came up with this ridiculous setup. I want a weight room not a curves!

  • ChrisBean November 4, 2014 (4:21 pm)

So glad to know they are up and running again. Glad to know that childcare and Emerald City Smoothie are back, too. I’m sure the gym is far from perfect right now what with the old tenants leaving the place in disarray less than two weeks ago. I plan on stopping by tomorrow morning and can’t wait to get back to my exercise routine. Thanks to everyone for all the updates!

  • mozabo November 4, 2014 (5:33 pm)

LP – I’m not sure if there will be a women’s only gym. One of the guys there said something about converting that room into a senior citizens workout area with smaller equipment for seniors to use.

  • SR November 4, 2014 (5:55 pm)

Should have waited to open… Everything is in disarray, I was hoping my first impression of the “new” gym was going to be a great feeling… Instead it was the opposite. I understand the needs of members and the idea of getting open as quick as possible but it looks and feels awful. Don’t believe me? Go and just look at all the faces of members aimlessly wondering around like someone came into their house and stole all the furniture.

  • WS mom November 4, 2014 (6:40 pm)

I’m an 11-year member, and am really looking forward to getting started again! I won’t be joining, though, until the women’s gym opens. PLEASE open it quickly! Any timeline available?

  • kate November 4, 2014 (7:12 pm)

I, too, am a member because of the women’s only workout room. I love it in there! Please don’t change it.

  • rac November 4, 2014 (7:27 pm)

Clearly they are doing the best they can considering the time and equipment they had to work with. I haven’t been in yet but looking forward to getting back to whatever they have to offer for now. Thanks
    to everyone for updates.

  • Fitz November 4, 2014 (7:43 pm)

Do any other clubs have women’s only workout rooms?

  • PG Carr November 4, 2014 (8:41 pm)

It might have been in disarray at 555, but we visited it about an hour later it looks MUCH better. things are clean. In fact i took a lot of pictures that i will post

  • Pg Carr November 4, 2014 (8:46 pm)

Here is an album of the pics i took. Don’t believe the naysayers. Yes there’s a lot of work to be done but i saw many people working out just fine and they were much happier (talked to a few familiar faces)

  • Brian November 4, 2014 (9:07 pm)

The women’s only area seemed very sexist to me. I think that area should become racquet ball / squash courts.

  • Sweetie November 4, 2014 (9:22 pm)

Thank you so much for being open!
I was getting slow and fat lol
2 hours later… Much more centered and happy :)
Best wishes on finishing all the hard work you started :)

  • ChrisBean November 4, 2014 (9:30 pm)

Pg Carr – thank you for the pictures. Glad to see the cardio equipment. I’ll be there tomorrow. I’ve gained a few pounds eating too much chocolate and sitting in front of my computer reading up on all the gym news.

  • Pangea November 4, 2014 (9:31 pm)

The women’s area is a big perk and one of the two reasons (the other being the pool) that I am a member. I strongly encourage the new management to keep this area for women only. It was always well used when I was there and I think you will lose many members if this is changed. Glad to hear the overall good reports so far.

  • Alphonse November 4, 2014 (9:53 pm)

What is the “women’s gym”? There were a lot of women only health clubs when I lived in the South in the 80’s, but I’ve never heard of a gym that allows both genders then separates it into men’s and women’s (other than the dressing rooms). I was thinking about checking this place out after they’re back up and running, but I won’t bother if I’m going to have to work out in the “ladies’ area”.

  • Pangea November 4, 2014 (9:57 pm)

I strongly encourage the new management to keep the women’s area open. It is a big perk for many members and was always well used when I was there. That area and the pool are the two reasons I kept my membership through all the challenges over the past few years. I think if they close the women’s area, they will lose a lot of members. Glad to see the positive comments upon reopening today.

  • WS mom November 4, 2014 (10:23 pm)

@Brian- It may be hard to understand, but many women feel very intimidated and uncomfortable working out with men. Personally, I worked out on the 3rd floor for the first few years of my membership at the club, but after waking up for 6AM workouts to see the Girls Gone Wild video splashed across 3-5 screens on the 3rd floor EVERY SINGLE MORNING, and being made to feel stupid and prudish when I asked for the screens to be changed to something else, I opted for the women’s gym and have been there ever since. Honestly, I just don’t need the humiliation and aggravation. If the new club doesn’t continue the women’s gym, there’s no reason to stay, since that’s the only room I use. The women’s gym is popular, though, and I sincerely hope that the new club will keep it. I really want to support the new entity.

  • DV November 4, 2014 (10:33 pm)

I agree on the women’s only area. Every time I’ve done my workout regimen on the 3rd floor I get comments. It’s an unfortunate reality but a women’s only area is a huge comfort for many of us. I hope it stays.

  • Cb123 November 4, 2014 (10:49 pm)

I think they’ve been clear that work is in progress. I went today and yes there is a lot less equipment but even with that it was better than my recent experiences at the WS YMCA and Anytime Fitness that just don’t have that type of space. If there is not enough for you to join now then don’t – wait and see what happens over next few months. Also to people commenting on how the equipment is organized – I’ve belonged there for about 10 years and those free weights have been moved around 3 or more times…and probably will again.

  • Sue November 4, 2014 (10:50 pm)

Alphonse, I’ve never been to this gym so can’t speak to the womens’s gym here, but I was a member of a few gyms in NYC and NJ that had such a room. It was an optional room where only women could work out, but women were certainly free to use the entire gym. I’m a woman and I never used it in those gyms.

  • °•○●□James□●○•° November 4, 2014 (10:53 pm)

I haven’t checked the place out lately but is the squat rack there + leg press sled? I’m not seeing either from the pics in the previous post.

I would have thought that would’ve been the last things Sam would have ever stolen.

  • cb123 November 5, 2014 (7:45 am)

@James – all of the squat racks are there and I think the leg press but I’m not certain on that.

  • PG Carr November 5, 2014 (8:12 am)

    YOu’;re welcome Chris Bean.

My advice is this: don’t listen to the negative nancies on here. Go in and see it for yourself.

Yes it’s not a fully functioning club yet.

We all get that. And yes we’re all VERY skeptical and jaded.

    Also true.

But they are NOT charging right now. No pressure either for money. They opened this club and are not taking payment at the moment and they didn’t have to do this. The people i spoke to were happy to work out there and there was quite a few people there .

The towel racks were more full than i have ever seen them. It WAS clean and the lockerrooms did not smell like a giant Crotch. No there is no pool yet, but some equipment looked now.

So go and decide for yourself. Stop WHINING about what isn’t there yet, because it is no risk right now. Show support for the club even through your skepticism and it may succeed this time

  • Daldart November 5, 2014 (8:16 am)

Having an area of the club (other than locker rooms) that’s only open to women seems discriminatory. I’m not sure if appeasing someone’s insecurity is sufficient justification for this. Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and there was an area only open to men. Someone would file a federal lawsuit.

I remember when All-Star Fitness had a lot of the cool third-floor gear only available to folks working with trainers, forcing a lot of us to sneak on while the trainers were away.

New Management: Please keep all parts of the gym open to all members. No women’s-only area, no men’s-only area, no working-with-trainers-only area.

  • amy November 5, 2014 (8:24 am)

My comment is directed at Sweetie- making a comment like ‘slow and fat’ deserves an LOL is ignorant and unkind. And thanks for making sure we all know you spent 2hours at the gym. Whew! I was afraid you might get fat because you couldn’t go to the gym for two weeks.

  • PG Carr November 5, 2014 (8:49 am)

    Looked New not “now”

  • AlkiGrl November 5, 2014 (8:59 am)

To all the men who feel discriminated against for the existence of a women’s-only workout area… Welcome to our world 24/7. Unfortunately, your feeling slighted isn’t well substantiated since you have full access to the rest of the gym which has everything that the women’s-only area has. I like that it is available. Some women don’t want to be exposed to potential harassment. And some cultures don’t support mixing of women and men in that type of environment. .. hence the opening of women-only swim times for many local pools.
I don’t use that space, but am glad it exists.

  • ChrisBean November 5, 2014 (9:29 am)

From what I remember, the “women only” area of the gym has been there since the beginning. It doesn’t have a very large footprint in the gym and it is heavily used. Women aren’t obligated to work out there, but it is an option. People who have the opinion that having that area is “discriminatory” or “sexist” are entitled to that opinion but really, people, quit trying to make everything “P.C.”. Are the men missing out on anything by not being able to use the “women only” area? I doubt it as the 3rd floor has 50% or more equipment than the 2nd floor women’s area.

  • eigenwijs November 5, 2014 (9:29 am)

Having a women-only area in the gym is not discriminatory – the rest of the facility is open to all. I joined All Star because there WAS an women-only area. I got tired of being stared at by some of the men in the Westwood 24 Hour Fitness while using the equipment – particularly the ones requiring my legs to open and close. The fine gentlemen here may not do such icky things, but there are plenty of others that do, and having a space where I can focus on my workout and not whether I am giving someone a peep show thrill is something I’ll gladly pay for. There are also some religions that don’t allow women to exercise with men, so having a separate area allows them to be members of the gym and get regular exercise. If a group of men felt their gym time would be improved by having a separate area, I would support that. The goal is to create a comfortable workout space for all – and what works for you doesn’t necessarily work for me.

  • Seymore November 5, 2014 (10:07 am)

The gym has a coed steam room and sauna…but you need your own space to workout? okay

  • jim November 5, 2014 (10:23 am)

Some cultures women are not allowed to workout in the same presence as men. Its not a large space to start with. And its to small to put a court in height wise. It is just life, so get over it.

  • PG Carr November 5, 2014 (10:24 am)

As a man i have no problem with a women’s only workout area. I mean like…who cares? IF they feel better in there thus their workout will be better and they will continue. It is of no bother to me at all. I don’t even need to “understand it”, just respect it.

  • eigenwijs November 5, 2014 (10:25 am)

Or not use the steam room and sauna…

  • Mike November 5, 2014 (10:26 am)

By definition it is sex discrimination.

  • Marty November 5, 2014 (10:29 am)

I want a “men only” section. I am tired of women staring at my butt and making sexist comments! (Joking)

The first time I went to Allstar I ended up in the women’s gym by mistake. My first thought was that there sure are a lot of women here on week day mornings! I worked out for at least a half hour before one of the women told me nicely that I was in the women only section. Embarrassing!

  • Babs November 5, 2014 (10:48 am)

Please bring back the woman’s area! It did not discriminate. It was right beside daycare too.

  • Ronald November 5, 2014 (11:07 am)

I’ve never been comfortable with idea that part of the gym was off limits to me for the sole fact that i have a penis. If we’re are being all charged the same and I’m not welcome in part , then charge more for women . It’s not fair if I can’t use part of the gym. If people are inappropriate, notify staff. Why punish a group collectively? Wouldn’t fly for a second if there was a men’s only section. If you’d rather not be around icky men, join Curves. Just sayin’

  • Runner Girl November 5, 2014 (11:28 am)

I haven’t been there in a couple years. I checked it out yesterday. I really wished they would of waited a few more weeks to open it right. No pool and very limited machines. It looks like it is headed in the right direction. Women only area is a waste. If you only want to work out with women go to CURVES!!! Part of the reason I go to the gym is to get attention from men. I feel and look great before and after my workout.

  • PG CArr November 5, 2014 (11:30 am)

By definition it is also a non issue. it was a small part of the gym, bothered no one and was well used. I usually don’t say “get over it” but really…get over it

I’m going later to workout with my wife this evening and will report on our experience

  • JP November 5, 2014 (12:28 pm)

You people against the Women’s Only workout room are a piece of work!! I have tried to work out on the 3rd floor and have had bad experiences. I’ve been hit on several times, asked out several times, and I do not need men staring at my ass or chest everytime I walk by. The Women’s Only workout room is very very popular because we do not want to be hit on or gawked at when we work out…. If you are offended that the gym offers it, go join a different gym!

  • RT November 5, 2014 (1:26 pm)

Let’s start with being grateful that something is rising out of the ashes of our former gym. Give new management a chance to complete the basics. As a woman I understand why some feel intimidated by working out with “the guys” , and it was and may again, be nice to have the option of a separate section. I rarely used it myself, as I preferred the full range of free weights available on the third floor and the mixed company of serious weight trainers who encouraged me to pump a litter harder and do my best. Never felt harassed, and appreciated the wide open spaces of the third floor. Light and bright, even on these dark days. I encourage those women who have hesitated in the past to try the third floor. It is better than giving up your workouts!

  • Carol November 5, 2014 (2:47 pm)

    Re Women’s area,
And let’s remember that women’s bodies are different (often smaller) and many of the machines are designed for men. I don’t use the women’s area but if I did, I would really love it to have some equipment designed for people (aka women) with smaller wingspans, etc.

  • GB November 5, 2014 (4:54 pm)

Went to the gym tonight and the studios are still perfect for dancing! They are not charging and are just having members sign their names at the front desk. Hope to see everyone at Zumba at 5:25 on Thursday for some Latin-inspired cardio fitness!

  • kate November 5, 2014 (5:09 pm)

Seems like we’re hearing a lot of “thumbs up” for the women only area and not ONE “thumbs up” for seniors area. Correct me if I’m wrong, but new management would be wise to continue the women only area.

  • run_dmc November 5, 2014 (5:23 pm)

Looking forward to going back to the gym and am happy to be patient about giving them the time it takes to rebuild. I think the new owners are striking the right balance on opening while staging in the remodel to give people who don’t have other options/want to find a whole new place some place to work out. So kudos! As for the women’s only room. Honestly, too many people get twisted about things that don’t affect them at all. The women’s area took up barely any room and I can’t imagine it ever negatively impacted a single person who couldn’t or wouldn’t use it. I’d love to have the sauna and steam rooms be single-sex only too, since I regularly face men starting up unwanted conversations when I enter the sauna. But, I suck that up because in the long run it’s not that big a deal since I don’t have to face it for the majority of time I’m there – when I work out. So, I’ll make a deal: I won’t complain about having a co-ed sauna and then all you “shouldn’t be a women’s only workout room” people don’t complain about that.

  • Amy Thomson November 5, 2014 (6:01 pm)

I used the women’s only section of the gym, partly because it was quieter, and the equipment was better suited to women’s smaller frames. I would suggest one or two fewer cardio machines, and a little more stretch space. I would also suggest that they install blinds in the windows between the women’s only gym and the studio. Some of the women who use the gym are Muslim and would probably appreciate option to have some extra privacy.

  • Cami November 5, 2014 (6:56 pm)

I got a really good vibe when I went in today. I love this gym through all the up’s and down’s and I’m hoping for the best!

  • Pg Carr November 5, 2014 (7:59 pm)

Worked out tonight with wife. great workout. No stink. I took pictures i will post tomorrow. signed back up before workout. no dues charged till the 20th. great rate for re-enrolling.

Don’t believe the negative nonsense and the whining on here. Come in for yourself and see.

The showers are also in nice condition. Plenty towels. Missing some lighter dumbbells but can work around that. There appeared to be some new green machines.

  • PG Carr November 5, 2014 (8:01 pm)

“Honestly, too many people get twisted about things that don’t affect them at all. The women’s area took up barely any room and I can’t imagine it ever negatively impacted a single person who couldn’t or wouldn’t use it.”

I could not agree more. the woman’s workout area covers only maybe 1/4 of the 2nd floor at most. It bothers no one at all. Well except maybe for people who need a LIFE!

  • ChrisBean November 5, 2014 (10:12 pm)

I went to the gym this morning and was so happy to get back to my “routine”. They had a sign-in sheet at the temporary check-in desk and also had forms if you wanted to sign back up. They were reconfiguring the check-in desk and workers were measuring and installing new counter tops. The Kids Club looked the same, but I didn’t inspect it – just dropped my kid off. They had the same caregivers there as before. I did walk around the 3rd floor and thought it was funny that the old “All Star Fitness” logo was still on the floor in the weight room after all these years. I guess I never noticed it before probably because they placed machines on top of it. Everyone I encountered seemed up beat – from employees to members and even the construction workers. I thanked the people who worked at the check-in desk, Kids Club and Emerald City Smoothie for being there. Had a great run on the treadmill and left with my kid and smoothies. Glad they are back!

  • mozabo November 5, 2014 (11:38 pm)

What was the rate for re-enrolling?

  • Kathy November 6, 2014 (6:07 am)

I had my dues automatically charged to my visa each month. Should I stop that? I left a contact message on the club’s new web site on Tuesday but received no response. What are other people who had automatic deductins doing? Thanks.

  • Seymore November 6, 2014 (7:11 am)

I’ve been a member for awhile but I’m not re-enrolling just yet. When are they requiring that you sign up? I’m getting very near the end of my rope for this property. I went in yesterday and it definately is not currently a place i would join. There are only enough free weights for less than 5 people working out. Im seriously considering just joining LA fitness early and driving to Burien and then transition to West Seattle when it opens. Its complete crap that West Seattle has so few options for gyms that this place is still going. West Seattle: No good gyms or restaurants.

  • FJ November 6, 2014 (7:23 am)

Kathy – you will want to stop the auto deduct from the other club. It’s a different entity. I canceled my card and disputed the last charge.

  • PG Carr November 6, 2014 (7:49 am)

mozabo, i’d rather not disclose the exact amount or the discount for privacy sake, but it was acceptable and so i advise anyone thinking of rejoining, ENROLL NOW. they are not charging till the 20th, so you have a grace period, then the rates will go up plus a $75 enroll fee

  • PG Carr November 6, 2014 (7:52 am)

Seymore: they are not “Requiring” anything at this point, but to sign in right now. After the 20th the rates go up.

There was still plenty of weights we found to work out and got a good workout in last night. I took pictures of it all last night and will post in a day or 2. It seems that you already have your mind made up so good luck with LA Fitness

  • PG Carr November 6, 2014 (8:10 am)

I guess that I am now thoroughly sick of the whining and complaining about this club (as are others last night at the club I talked to).

Last night when we re-enrolled, we saw the previous contracts being examined and honored. They are trying their best to sort this mess. Yes the previous owner trashed the place. Yes the situation sucks.

But one person told me last night that this has been seriously “blown up” as he put it. He said after all it was just a gym – and he’s right.

If money has been lost I am sorry to hear of it, but i’ve lost money before on gyms (Pure Fitness, one of the worst). Right now there is NO risk to coming in and trying it out.

Classes are even running and still we are not being charged yet, so this is coming out of the owner’s pocket.

  • RG November 6, 2014 (9:15 am)

Does anyone know of the Sauna and/or Steam Room are up and running despite the pool being out??

  • PG Carr November 6, 2014 (9:21 am)

RG they are not yet up as far as i know. Only the showers

  • AT November 6, 2014 (10:21 am)

Let’s talk about classes! I had the most wonderful workout last night in Laura’s kick class. So glad the classes are coming back online.
I was told at the membership desk everyone is free until the 20th, then you have to start paying. If you bring your bank statement or an old contract, they will honor what you were paying with no enrollment fee and no first/last.
They don’t yet have our old membership info yet, but if they can get it, they’d like to start the automated withdrawals back up on or around the 20th.
DEAR GYM OWNERS: please establish an opt-in system for past members. We’ve been jerked around and overcharged way too often, and you should not assume people automatically want to have their dues withdrawn.
DEAR MEMBERS: blocking the last owner from any withdrawals does not protect you from automatic withdrawals by the new owner. They’re operating under a new name, so your bank will not know to block it.
Finally… Women-only area is important — please keep it.

  • piper November 6, 2014 (1:13 pm)

regarding the previous comment that the new owners will re-start automatic withdrawals on the 20th. is that for real? they are a completely new business, how can they legally do that? I cancelled the credit card that the former club had on file. is this some new nightmare I have to now worry about–the new club trying to charge and then sending me to collections when they can’t because the card is closed? I do not have an agreement with these new people. how can they do that? is there a phone number for them? I can’t find one online.

  • cb123 November 6, 2014 (1:40 pm)

@Piper – No, they just mean that on or about the 20th they will be able to start setting people up and billing people. You’d have to set up a new membership with them for them to draft your account.

  • Louise November 6, 2014 (3:30 pm)

To continue the thread, I attended Karen’s 6am class this morning. Fabulous as always, and great to see many familiar faces. Painters were busy painting in the yoga and spin cycle rooms when I was there. Weights and such are a little sparse up on the 3rd floor, and women’s gym still needs to be organized. FREE to all until Nov 20. All they asked was for my name and telephone number today. Apparently, prices are going up in the New Year (appropriately) but they plan to honor all old prices.
I wonder if Marcus is back? I wonder if Austin is back? I hope so on both counts…

  • Cupajoe November 6, 2014 (3:51 pm)

Current members, why not start stating some current prices being paid. I quit the gym in April of last year once Sam bought the club. I had been a member for ten years. I want to rejoin immediately. What are the going rates, please?

  • Anthony November 6, 2014 (5:49 pm)

Ii wanted to thank westseattle health club for opening I do have comment about men’in women treat us all fare thank you

  • RCS November 7, 2014 (2:32 pm)

HB I completely disagree with just about every point of complaining you posted.

Yes, they could have gone down the street to “Sears” and purchased dumbbells. Same could be said about going down the street to Home Depot to fix everything else that’s broken in the gym. That’s not a practical approach when there is a huge laundry list of items to address.

As for the free-weight layout – you’re WAY wrong. The previous layout was horrible. Machines on top of each other or pressed against the mirrors. There was no walking space throughout the gym. Glad they went back to their original layout. It’s clean, organized, and spacious.

I have the perfect solution for someone that complains as much as you – don’t go there. There’s a Curves for women down the street. Enjoy.

Kudos to the new manager and team for whipping this place into shape. You guys rock!

  • cupajoe November 7, 2014 (3:16 pm)

    RCS,

    That was fantastic!!!

I believe this will be a new Club everybody will be thankful for in West Seattle, for the next 20 years. Whatever happens week after week, is a small part of the big plan. If you truly know how to work out and use a gym, be thankful that this former great club will again be able to provide you the opportunity like before, to get in shape, and change your life.

    It’s up to you.

Nothing more needs to be said.

  • PG Carr November 7, 2014 (4:16 pm)

RCS I agreed on every post. I loved working out there wednesday night with all the new room. I’m not worried aout a few missing weights and don’t need them to run to “Sears” or other such. I saw nothing to whine about. It’s a work in progress.

  • Jj November 7, 2014 (6:10 pm)

Pg… What privacy concerns do you have with sharing your rate?

Day 14 after the gym closes, I return. An effort rivaling the power of Barium Nitrate propels me from the couch. My arm flaps wave and the bowl of kettle corn and my displaced cat both stare at me dejectedly. I blow the dust off my gym shorts and squeeeeeeeze into moisture wicking Tee. 8 tenths of a mile. Too far. I’ll drive. The building stands. It smirks like a old lover. I remember you, she says. You get gassy if you eat Alfredo. I know. I know. Everyone around me knows. I sally forth. Everything seems the same. Yes, the same. A little cleaner, and except for the people in Swim Outlet grab bag Speedos (Paisley fuchsia is Definitely Not Appropriate for late life lothario swimming!) sitting around like they’re impatiently waiting for a delayed flight, all is well.

  • gymlayout November 8, 2014 (8:08 am)

I’m not sure if the 3rd floor’s layout will be permant or not, but can someone let the owner know to go back to the original layout. I dont think the dumbbells should be in the bench presses and squats area. It’ll be over crowded in that area and harder to work out with the people that are doing chest/legs day. Go back to the original layout where the dumbbells had their own area please.

  • SGG November 8, 2014 (8:17 am)

    What are the rates?

  • Mel November 8, 2014 (5:06 pm)

So that’s 12 votes for women’s gym, 4 votes for feeling annoyed that there’s a women’s gym, 1 vote for current free-weight layout, 1 vote for the previous free-weight layout, 3 votes for just continuing memberships, 2 votes for ripping the old memberships up and starting again, one vote for using the equipment from the sporting goods department at Sears, 4 votes for pizza, 3 votes for Jimmy John’s subs…
    .
But seriously, the place looked pretty clean, although some of the stuff I need but Adams took isn’t replaced yet (kettlebells, adjustable benches). The black mold has been removed from the men’s showers (it returns quickly, so be vigilant!). I would still hesitate to walk in bare feet on the changing room carpet, but replacement is to come, I’m sure.
    .
And I’m amazed how people can make up reasons in their own minds why a women’s area Just Shouldn’t Exist (approximate number of guys I’ve seen staring at/trying to talk to women who are working out – in the thousands. Approximate number of women who I’ve seen staring at/trying to talk to men who are working out – nil).

  • Cupajoe November 9, 2014 (7:56 am)

What are the rates going to be? I know it is free to workout until the 20th but is there an advantage to sign up before then to not have to pay a sign up fee? Will there be free months if you pay for a year in advance?

I am just hoping this is not a used car/new car sales situation. How much are people paying currently? Why is it such a big secret?

  • Poolgirl November 9, 2014 (12:29 pm)

Does anyone know when the pool will open? We haven’t had a pool update in a while.

  • carol November 9, 2014 (12:52 pm)

Re rates: I think we are hesitant to share rates because that’s between us and the contracting party. And it’s best to get any new rate information from the gym itself. Stop in, the front desk staff are super accomodating about addressing various questions.
Re rate I paid for Allstar, etc. was less than most other gym rates around, if that gives you a ballpark.
Was at gym this morning and heard lots of cheers from the folks participating in one of the restarted classes.

  • BB November 9, 2014 (2:47 pm)

Well the BF and I stopped by this afternoon because we’re really wanting to go to a closer gym. The guy at the front was completely worthless. We asked about details of the classes and he handed us the schedule. We said no, what are the descriptions of the classes as in what do you do during them? He said I don’t know, look at the website. I
Was like um, have you looked at the new website? There is nothing on there except yep we’re open. He was like oh, go upstairs and ask one of the instructors, she’s up there teaching a class now. Yea, not going to interrupt a class, thanks dude. So I asked about prices, he said he didn’t know except it was free until the 20th.
Again I asked if there was someone I could talk to so I could obtain more details about membership, personal trainers, etc. he pointed to some other guy down the hall. We asked tho guy about rates and he pulled put a torn folded paper from his pockets and told me it was $44.99 a month plus a $50 initiation fee. I asked about classes he said he doesn’t know details and knew nothing about trainer prices.

    Sigh
I really want this gym to work because it’s so close, but come on, get a better trained staff and have more details. I know you just reopened but that whole experience was terrible and it would make most people not join.
I’m going to wait it out a few weeks and see if they work out their kimks. God I hope they do.

  • Kc November 9, 2014 (9:28 pm)

BB, thanks for sharing the info. The managements are to blame regarding the class schedule. Front desk staffs have no knowledge about the rate or class descriptions.

  • fluffy November 10, 2014 (5:22 am)

its monday at 520 am & no one is here to open. wtf?!? Really ticked off that I can’t get in. There had better be one bad ass excuse to pull this stunt yet again

  • Kathleen Kemp November 10, 2014 (8:15 am)

Despite the rollercoaster of comments regarding the club, I have to give out HUGE kudos to the instructors who continue to offer quality classes even after a month or more WITHOUT pay. This weekend I took spin classes with Courtney and Kermit and both of them supplied their OWN audio equipment to bring music to the studio. I am sure that both of them are hoarse this morning having no use of microphones to teach. The gym does look a lot sparklier…. I am cautiously optimistic!!

  • BB November 10, 2014 (8:52 am)

Fluffy, did you ever get in? Kathleen, I totally applaud the instructors and really I swear my comment isn’t aimed toward them. I just wanted people to know the club still has some issues to work out. Like I mentioned I really want this gym to work and I planned on trying one of the classes on Tuesday to see if I like it. KC-yea I think the management needs to do some more work to help the poor staff out. From what I’ve heard the instructors are trying their best to deal with the situation.

    • WSB November 10, 2014 (8:59 am)

In case Fluffy doesn’t come back soon to reply: I suspect we might have gotten at least a text or e-mail or tweet or FB message or two if the gym HADN’T opened by now … but that comment is the only mention.

  • honkingpipes November 10, 2014 (9:21 am)

They are forging ahead on repairing and upgrading. The pool should be ready in a couple weeks, BUT it won’t be accessible until the HVAC is repaired. There is a new Group X class Monday and Wednesday 8-9 for those needing low impact workout, until the pool is open.

  • SkepticalProspect November 10, 2014 (11:35 am)

I’m not sure the new management is still looking at these comments but, as someone who is still undecided about rejoining, I’ll say I would be far more enticed to sign up now if they offered a low introductory rate on memberships (e.g., $20/month for 60 days) while they work on getting the gym back in full working order. Asking members to pay what they were paying before ($44/month was the same rate that Adams was charging for month to month memberships a year ago) seems a bit steep right now for a club with a closed pool and a weight room at ~40% capacity (if you include the women’s only room). Asking for patience (which I’m more than willing to give) should also be balanced by giving value for money.

  • Fluffy November 10, 2014 (12:29 pm)

I never did get in ;( Decided to go to work stupid early instead. I have emailed Dan & hit the contact tab on the website & haven’t heard anything back yet. Any ideas if they will be open at 5am tomorrow?? Any ideas if they will have a set of people who will open in the mornings? Or a call forwarding system so if this does happen, we can get a hold of somebody? Anybody?

  • PJ November 10, 2014 (1:32 pm)

I have been to the gym twice since the reopen. While it does smell a little more fresh, much work still needs to be done. I was told yesterday that the women’s only workout room will reopen in 2 weeks. The instructors for classes need to bring their own stereo equipment (what if they didn’t own a portable stereo?). Also and unfortunately for them, they do not have microphones so they’re having to yell during the whole class. The instructors have not been told when they will get new stereos or microphones. I did have an issue with trying to resign up yesterday and was told I couldn’t because he (the front desk guy) did not have access to a photocopier and I should try again tomorrow when the sales team is in….very weird.
Work is being done to improve the place aesthetically, but communication all around is still bad.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and am hoping for the best.

  • Lpangela November 10, 2014 (5:00 pm)

Thanks PJ for the update on ladies gym! I was trying to get a hold of the gym to make decisions on gym membership and will stay with them if they continue with a women’s gym.

  • kate November 10, 2014 (8:40 pm)

I was at the gym this morning and the head maintenance guy, who was at the front desk, told me that they will turn the women’s only area into a co-ed senior area; no more women’s only area. Agreed, communication is not up to speed just yet.

  • BB November 11, 2014 (8:11 am)

I went again last night to get the full tour of the gym. The guy told us that the Women’s only section would open again but not until they got the rest of the new equipment and tossed the old stuff being stored in there. He mentioned the pool would be at least a few weeks out until it’s ready to go. I asked why they weren’t open yesterday morning since Fluffy mentioned it and he was dumbstruck and had no answer. He said he honestly didn’t know there was an issue with opening.
I asked about personal training as well, and pricing if you buy it when you buy your membership is $35 for half hour and $65 for an hour. I guess if you want to buy it’s $65 for half hour and $80 for an hour, yikes.
He did say they were working on hiring more people so the class schedule should expand. I hope so because I would like some better options either before work or after.
In any case, I’m going tonight since it’s free until the 20th and just going to use the machines. The machines they have left look fine and the weight area looks good as well.

  • supernova72 November 11, 2014 (2:51 pm)

Finally took the plunge and made my 1st visit since the shut down. Full disclosure—had been a member for 5 yrs and been hitting various gyms for 30 yrs so little things sort of jump out at me that might not be as important to others.

This gym is operating at half capacity right now IMHO. Like others have said ONE weight bench. Looks like half the weights are gone (plates).

Yes it’s cleaner but man it feels like a morgue in there (no music, TV’s etc). Almost feels like I snuck into a bldg I should not be in.

    Machines are super squeaky clean–realy.

OK, but hey it’s OPEN. rates are 49.95 month to month starting Nov 20th. Not sure when the first bill hits. Or you can pay $45 a month “annual”.

Keeping the faith that the on ordered equipment is in route!

  • Poolgirl November 11, 2014 (4:57 pm)

I am wondering why we haven’t had a formal update from Dan Lehr. It seems like he should be providing updates for us regarding machines, when the pool will be up, when they will have a phone number, etc. It would be nice to hear from the Club on these issues.

    • WSB November 11, 2014 (5:16 pm)

@Poolgirl – Just a note, now that the club is open, until there is some actual “news” from our standpoint (say, the pool reopening), we’re not seeking nor planning to publish routine updates here on WSB (that might not be what you were suggesting, but I wanted to make it clear). The closure and transition were news (as the prior year-plus of turmoil has been), the reopening and when it would happen were news, but now WSHC is up and running, and the club as a commercial business is perfectly capable of updating its own website, maybe even setting up a FB page, to get that kind of information out to everyone, and to answer questions, and I certainly hope they are planning to – it does not appear the “placeholder website” has been updating since it was originally launched. I would urge members/prospective members to talk to the club staff about that, if you haven’t already. Absent something in one of the now-tangential court/bankruptcy cases, or something else unexpected that someone flags us to, our next story on this will probably be an update when and if we hear the pool is reopening – TR

  • poolpalws November 11, 2014 (11:50 pm)

so Dan, when is the pool reopening? I have been going to the YMCA everyday for 3+ wks, you said it should be open in 4 wks when I joined the Y, what gives? updates please, I only come for pool and sauna, since Allstar opened in 2000, info, please! thanks.

  • Jerzy Gaciarz November 12, 2014 (6:48 am)

    Dan:

    1. I was told two weeks ago the pool will be open in two weeks. Is it open now?
    2. What is the phone number to West Seattle Health Club
    3. What is the website to West Seattle Health Club

    Jurek, member since 2000.

  • max November 12, 2014 (8:34 am)

Hey Kathleen, kudos doesn’t pay the class instructors bills. Why don’t you find a way to pay them. It’s pretty sad that a community supports a club that doesn’t pay their staff and on top of it demand that the club charge a cheap rate when it does get open. 50$ a month is not enough to support a club that size and pay their staff a liveable wage. Wake up people

  • PG Carr November 12, 2014 (9:12 am)

    Jurek:

    1. The pool is not yet open
    2. Not sure what the phone number is yet
    3. The website is

  • cb123 November 12, 2014 (2:04 pm)

The 10/25 WSB blog article says ‘the pool could take up to 4 weeks, since he (Dan Lehr) says they will take the opportunity for some HVAC improvements, repainting, etc., in that part of the club’. That was just over 2 weeks ago……

  • Mary November 12, 2014 (7:18 pm)

Was at the club yesterday and was told the pool would reopen 5-6 wks. Working on the HAVAC system in the pool area before the pool can reopen.

  • Skye November 12, 2014 (10:23 pm)

Max, you know nothing about operating a fitness club. Nor do you understand overhead versus profit. That club before Sam had a profit, after expenses of $80,000 per month. Allstar over leveraged himself making bad decisions and opened or tried to open other clubs in the wrong place at the wrong time. His Seattle club was a cash cow. This location pays industrial rental rates and SAC pays premium retail space rent for a top metro location, same with WAC and BAC. Also, there is no comparison to what they offer in executive benefits to members. Obviously, you have not checked out an Executive LA fitness. Do your research, so you can speak with experience. West Seattle Health Club can easily again, profit from its members at $50.00 per person.

  • Skye November 12, 2014 (10:30 pm)

Barre Class with Cascee is now happening on Wednesday nite at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at same time as before. No bars yet, but she makes it work and gives her always great work out. Lucky you’s and me, we have our class back…an awesome week for West Seattle Health Club. Also, those of you that have contacts, get a copy to them. They are honoring contracts that are already in place = no new sign up fees.

  • Skye November 12, 2014 (10:32 pm)

Laura is also teaching kick boxing on Wedneday nite = it goes to show you that patients pays off and the class is rocking. Does anyone know if Kim is teaching spin on Monday?

  • PG Carr November 13, 2014 (7:03 am)

Well said Skye and thanks for responding to what was just another Whine post. Also what he may be forgetting was they will be selling personal training packages and that always supplements the income. Fitness 19 of which we also belong to charges only $12 a month but they do personal training.

  • PG Carr November 13, 2014 (7:05 am)

206-556-3280 is the number for the club and it indeed works!!

  • PG Carr November 13, 2014 (7:47 am)

Zumba will also be tomorrow at 5:25,so stop by and work off some of that club closure weight!!

  • Schmitz Park Dad November 13, 2014 (9:20 am)

Be very careful to review your credit card statements associated with the prior owner. When I signed up, they made me pay two months in advance. They then billed me each subsequent month, meaning each charge to credit card was for the period two months in advance.

These scumbags charged my credit card on 10/22, which I believe is actually the date they closed the doors. Very sleazy. I had to put in a dispute for TWO full months of charges for periods when the club is not owned and operated by the prior owner.

  • SM November 13, 2014 (10:50 am)

I’ve be a member for about 7 years, when it was still Allstar Fitness.

I went early yesterday to talk to someone about the membership prior to Laura’s 6:30pm KickMix class (the fabulous Nikki was the sub) but Laura had already told us last week that she would not be there. GREAT class!!

Anyway, I walked in there expecting to be given the run around or some kind of an excuse that someone could not help me at that time, etc. But I walked in there with my WSAC Contract in hand. Ray was the only one at the front desk. He was helping another lady with her membership, directing people as they came in to sign the clip board, answer questions about classes, is the pool open, etc etc. Over the next 12 minutes he helped myself along with two others (all at different stages as they came in the door) with our memberships. He honored all terms of my previous contract, noted I had already paid first and last month so I was not charged for that. My previous contract had the annual fee that charges each Feb. So, he did not charge me that and I will still pay that each Feb. It was a painless process and he is kind of funny too. It think his favorite saying is “What’s up?”

I also asked him before signing, “So, the women’s workout room is that really going to reopen or will it be a senior workout room?” he said, “Yes, it will be the Women’s room”

I received a carbon copy of the new contract and when the new membership cards arrive they will send me an email with instructions of where to get it. Until then, sign name on the “Members” clipboard at the front desk.

I’m very optimistic and looking forward to seeing the improvements that are coming. I’m glad I did it. I’ve missed the instructors and my gym peeps!!

  • SM November 13, 2014 (11:53 am)

    PG carr,

I saw your post from this morning
“Zumba will also be tomorrow at 5:25,so stop by and work off some of that club closure weight!!
Comment by PG Carr — 7:47 am November 13, 2014”

That did not match the Nov 8th schedule that I have so I called to confirm! Thank you for providing the number above by the way. :)

    Confirmed current Zumba classes:

    TUESDAY 12:15pm and 7:35pm
    THURSDAY 5:25pm
    FRIDAY 4:15pm

  • PG Carr November 13, 2014 (2:52 pm)

My pleasure SM. Glad to help out. I will be there tonight at 5:25. i missed Zumba badl.

SM our experience was the same when we signed up last week with Ray. He honored our bank statement and no price increases. Very smooth process and nothing to complain about. We had a great workout last wednesday and last night too. Yes there are a few things missing but one can work around that. Men’s showers are being cleaned right now but the Family swim showers are operational. We find it a pleasure to work out there again

Does anyone know when the spin classes will start up again? See all you Bar Bootcamp loyals tommorrow, November 15th at 11:00 a.m. for breaking our muscles in again with Kacee. I am greatful that the building owner is taking the reins to get this club back to its glory. He can now get paid by the clubs profits and have control over keeping his building asset in goid repair and maintence & to retain its value.
I hope he is smart and keeps it, has shareholders, a board and if he could even go Co-op, with members vested = count me in. REI and PCC do it, why not a health club that is a community hub that we all love and support? My parents were shareholders of a private tennis & swim club when I was a kid. It works and the community members that vested are still loyal and committed to its success. The original shareholders take their kids to adults, making the club apart of their lifestyle, then the kids also carry on the legacy. What do you all think?

I tried to sign up today to transfer my membership from former company. I was told I need to pay an annual fee. I’ve been going to that club since 2007 and never paid an annual fee. The membership guy said that couldn’t be possible, but I think I know what I’ve paid and not paid. I have my billing statements back for a year and there is no annual fee charged, as I knew there wouldn’t be. So, if they are going to honor former memberships, seems I shouldn’t have to pay an annual fee. Has anyone else had this issue and/or not paid annual fees with their past memberships?

As former WSAC member that paid his membership in full a year at a time I was particularly irritated when the club closed 3 months after my annual renewal. I went into the club today to see what they were offering for people like me. I was directed to a nice guy back at the sales desks who reviewed my credit card statement showing the WSAC annual membership payment. He then told me they will honor that annual membership (plus add a month) for no additional money from me. This is far more generous than I expected and the new owner deserves a lot of credit for doing “the right thing” at great cost to his bottom line. I hope more former WSAC members give the new club a chance.
