Update: Fire callout on Beach Drive = ‘small kitchen fire’

2:53 AM: A big callout for a potential house fire in the 4800 block of Beach Drive. First crew on scene sees “light smoke.” More to come.

2:56 AM: Most of the units are being canceled – this turned out to be, according to communications between fire crews and dispatch, “small kitchen fire, (extinguished) by occupant.”

perhaps its due to increased coverage, but there seems to be an inordinate number of “food on stove” fires in west seattle.

Just a case of increased coverage. In years past we generally wouldn’t mention them. However, it has been made abundantly clear to us that a full residential/building fire response draws enough attention that people wonder what happened, so there’s no point in turning up our nose and saying “feh, not worth mentioning,” when we have the information anyway and unlimited space in which to publish it …

I appreciate the reporting! Was woken up by all the sirens and love knowing that I can glance at the WSBlog and find out what’s going on!

My kids and I were awakened by the loud and bright full lights and sirens call out of this, as we live the next block over. Thanks to the WSB we knew that even at 3am we could check the blog in real time and understand what was going on. Quite the relief to know the details, it was only a small kitchen fire. After seeing a ladder truck, engine truck, medic 1, police unit and even a battalion (whatever the fire dept SUV is) we were glad to have this reported on out of concern for our neighbors, and general curiosity.

Thanks, just glad to be of service. And if you ever DON’T see something about a big callout within 10 minutes or so, please text or call 206-293-6302 … once in a very rare while we might not have somebody at the keyboard and the alert means everything. I used to have a triple failsafe tying the city 911 log to an RSS-related alert that would go off within 15 minutes of certain types of calls, but something in the city system went wrong a few months ago and now it’s about 13 hours off … TR
