West Seattle traffic-alert update: Fauntleroy/Oregon light fixed

10:50 AM: Heard this on the scanner and just checked it out. The signals at Fauntleroy/Oregon are out – a truck is believed to have taken out part of the equipment. People are zipping through the light rather than treating it as an all-ways stop as they should be. No sign of a repair crew yet.

11:37 AM: Just added two photos, including the pole that was knocked down on the north side of Fauntleroy. If you’re in the area, please let us know (206-293-6302 text/voice or editor@westseattleblog.com) if you see a repair crew; we’ll otherwise be checking back in an hour or so.

3 PM UPDATE: We went by within the past hour; the light’s back on and other repairs were being completed:

Just came through, turning west onto Oregon. I would definitely avoid using Oregon to get onto Fauntleroy where the traffic is indeed zipping through.

that’s a pretty major exit from the junction to go to the bridge. Hope they get on it soon. Wow.

It is very common for people to treat malfunctioning traffic signals as if they don’t even exist. I’m not sure if it’s a problem specific to this area or if it’s just because most people are terrible drivers in general. My money is on the latter.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been waiting to turn left on to Faunt from Ore and my light turns green and an eastbound driver blows through their red. Been asking SPD to enforce it for years. It’s sad that one can basically do whatever they want because the chances cops will see you is slim to none and I think people realize this and that is why they drive and park like they do.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been waiting to drive through the Faunt and Ore light and the Faunt light turns green and a driver turning from Ore towards the bridge is still going through the intersection, obviously having run a red light. It’s sad that one can basically do whatever they want because the chances cops will see you are slim to none and I think people realize this and that is why they drive and park like they do. :-)

Not today, but I’ve noticed the light at 35th and Alaska flashing more than a few times in the last month.

Yeah Chef, it goes bith ways. But when the bridge is backed up, I find it’s the Fauntleroy drivers that continue into the intersection blocking it so that when OR has the green they cannot move from the stop line. My main point here is that enforcement is needed but SPD has bigger fish to fry or tend to favor Admiral Way and the bridge/bus lane.

I wish they’d change the Oregon to Fauntleroy light back to the old timing. The six second green light just isn’t cutting it, especially when you account for local drivers taking 2 full seconds to recognize that the light has turned green.

    Another great comment cjboffoli.

ChefJoe is incorrect about cars still going through the intersection “obviously having run a red light”.
Cars that enter the intersection before the light turns red are not in violation. They are allowed to proceed.
It is a violation to enter the intersection after the light turns red (running a red light) as well as obstructing the intersection.

Fauntleroy to Oregon vs. Oregon to Fauntleroy. Can this country become more polarized?

Sorry, comment time is over.
