West Seattle road work: More repairs for Spokane Street Viaduct

Announced late today by SDOT, more repair work is ahead for the surface of the Spokane Street Viaduct. Next Thursday (September 25th), the inside (left) eastbound lane will be closed 10 am-2 pm to fix “spalls” between the Highway 99 overpass and the 4th Avenue exit.

The repairs won’t stop until the job is completely redone correctly. Worst road job I have ever seen. Sure would like to know why SDOT is doing all the patching and rework on a newly rebuilt roadway that was bragged about being done on time and in budget and wasn’t there a bonus for getting it done on time. Who’s paying for the constant rework ? and is original contractor still doing/ getting jobs from our city ? would like to see who is involved with this one.

The problems are more than skin deep. Prior to the recent large-scale widening and subsequent rework, they had scraped off the surface, leaving sections of the underlying reinforcing steel rebar exposed to the elements for years, rusting and corroding. The rebar is the major component that provides structural integrity to the concrete. As long as that internal rebar is compromised (it won’t get better by itself), the roadway will continue to experience problems. What were they thinking?

Sorry, comment time is over.
