West Seattle Weather Watch: Tuesday thunderstorms

(Photo added: M/V Kaleetan off Alki with storm advancing from the north, around 10:15 am)
10:59 AM: Lightning, thunder, downpour, then hail – all in the past 15 minutes or so! How is it where you are?

11:19 AM UPDATE: We stand corrected – technically not hail. Some kind of ice pellet, sleet, frozen rain, etc. See/hear for yourself in our Instagram clip from inside the car. (If you can’t see it above, go here.) The National Weather Service’s “short-term forecast” alert said this would last until about 11:15 am, and since the rain has eased up a lot, they seem to be right!

1:25 PM UPDATE: And the wild weather is back – after a sunbreak, the rain resumed, then a few minutes ago, thunder and now it looks like that icy rain/sleet/etc. again …

Just had a power surge in North Admiral.

Power up and down in High Point & Arbor Heights. Had a wave of hail at High Point!

Thanks for the power mention. We have been out since before this began – saw it moving in from north of Alki but didn’t think it would arrive so fast.

Highland Park/S. Delridge, it just rolled in!

    .

Putting off my walk to Lee’s Produce until it clears, and even though it made me a bit cranky, I’m glad it didn’t wait a few more minutes, or I would be out in the middle of it now!

    .

Had one significant light flicker about 3-4 minutes ago, or so!

All of the above! I just love this weather – one of the reasons October is my favorite month. Another lightning came in just now as I was typing. Whee!

There was a HUGE boom over here by The Kenney about 5 minutes ago and a flash of light. It didn’t sound like thunder, although I’ve never seen a bolt that close. Sounded like an explosion? Could it have been a transformer?

  • Rob October 8, 2013 (11:14 am)

We heard that too! Just south of morgan junction, huge loud bang like a transformer or lightening strike.

  • Dexter October 8, 2013 (11:15 am)

Watch out for all the water on the road – esp heading onto Admiral Way exit off high-rise bridge west bound exit!

  • Beth October 8, 2013 (11:17 am)

Power surges in south park too

  • Amy B October 8, 2013 (11:18 am)

Came through the SW Austin and 16th ave area a few minutes ago like gangbusters: huge downpour, some lightning and thunder. Did get a bit of a power flicker too.

  • The Original MB October 8, 2013 (11:19 am)

Lots of rain & hail passing through on Delridge at the West Seattle Bridge. And we also had a quick power surge as well. Talk about a fast change in the weather!

  • Cait October 8, 2013 (11:20 am)

Evidently it was lightning over here. A few people here saw it in action – hit the middle of Fauntleroy! Careful out there, folks!

  • Gatewood mom October 8, 2013 (11:21 am)

I saw that lightning strike near the Kenney (slightly northwest of it) and heard the damn near simultaneous boom of thunder.

Killed my monitors and docking station at work. Thankfully a restart got it back and it didn’t fry my laptop. You’d think employers would spend a few bucks on surge protecting power strips.

Our Comcast power and internet are both out in Westwood. Anyone else having issues?

  • miws October 8, 2013 (11:40 am)

desertdweller, I’m in Highland Park/S. Delridge, and my Comcast Internet and TV are just fine.

    It’s baaaaaaack!

    .

Was just stirring some veggies I’m sauteeing, and saw the flash through the window, out of the corner of my eye, then heard the boomer.

    .

Wasn’t sure until the boomer, whether it was a flash of lightning, or the lights flickering…

    .

Glad I got that trip to Lee’s in, when I did, and didn’t get too wet!

Yeah, I didn’t think I’d have to update this story – after we even got to the point of a sunbreak – then BOOM.

At approx 11:00 am on 10/8/2013, A 130 foot tree in my front yard at the corner of 46th and Myrtle was struck by a lightning bolt. Loudest sound ever 30 feet away inmy home. Tree has a75 foot line down the side with bark removed. Not sure of damage at the top.

That must have been the resounding crash we heard maybe a mile away. Photo? If not, is it visible from the street? We’d come take a photo but of course would not trespass onto your property if it’s not in public view … That would be just north of The Kenney, wouldn’t it? – TR
