West Seattle business: Anytime Fitness moving to ex-Blockbuster

Finally an answer to a question we’re asked relatively frequently – what’s going into the former Blockbuster space in Admiral? You’ll recall it closed a year and a half ago, and then the parking lot became a pay lot three months later, suggesting a new tenant/owner wasn’t expected any time soon. But finally, someone IS getting ready to move in: Anytime Fitness is relocating from Charlestown Center.

We got the tip from WSB’er JayDee, and the move was confirmed today by Jacob Saldana, who bought Anytime Fitness along with his brothers in December of last year. He tells WSB they are starting demolition at the new location this week. “The space will be about double our current size and will give us about 6,500 square feet.” He says they’ve been working on expanding the club since they bought it: “It has always been our intention to provide a more functional, community gym that would fulfill all of the needs of our members and in order to do so we felt that we had to find a new location. We can’t wait for the opportunity to bring some of our programs that we have created at our Capitol Hill location to West Seattle. The new space will have enough room to accommodate showers, group exercise, and a more open free weight area. However, the gym will still be a manageable size that will allow us to provide excellent customer service and build relationships with our members rather than leaving them feeling as if they’re just another number.” They’re hoping to move into the new location (2222 California) by the end of the year

How about some free wi-fi? That’d be a great addition.

  • Admiral73 August 20, 2013 (4:35 pm)

That’s great news! Admiral needs a gym, not just the crossfit thing. Please add some boxing equipment!

it’s interesting to read this news here rather than see it at the gym of which I am a member. I have honestly not seen a lot of difference since the new owners took over although it might be cleaner. I’m not complaining because anytime fits my needs but I do find it interesting that if they’d like to develop a more personal connection they might try communicating with those of us who frequent the gym everyday!

As a member, I feel that this is wonderful news! I am hoping that the cardio machine area and weight machine area are also expanded, as these are the areas of the gym that I use. I am wondering if these changes will impact the membership fee?

Live right next door….so glad this lot isn’t going to become a mega-housing complex like every other available lot in West Seattle!

  • smokeycretin9 August 20, 2013 (6:39 pm)

    1. Do they serve merlot?
    2. Do they pay a living wage?
    3. Do they allow armed workouts?
    4. Are they sustainable?
    5. welcome to the hood.

I was hoping Blockbuster would become an auto parts store, but this is good too. I may join while waiting for LA Fitness to be built.

  • mrJT August 20, 2013 (7:55 pm)

I was sooooo hoping that Trader Joe’s would go in there.

  • JaWohl August 20, 2013 (7:55 pm)

I’m hoping they offer a senior rate for members 60+…I’d switch from my current club downtown when I retire.

  • JimClark August 20, 2013 (8:36 pm)

Anyone tell me what a membership costs?

  • :) August 20, 2013 (9:12 pm)

BUMMER….Sorry guys! West Seattle got enough fitness.
I was hoping for a Red Robin or a Ihop or a mid century consignment store or a fantastic day care.
    Again bummed :(

Hello all, this is Daniel Saldana, co-owner of the Anytime Fitness in West Seattle and Capitol Hill. My brothers and I are extremely excited for the opportunity of growing our club and adding to the already amazing community of West Seattle! We just signed the lease less than a month ago and we have been thinking of the best way to announce it to our members in the club. We have Life Fitness working on putting a 2-D poster together of what the new layout will look like with the new equipment and unique features we will have to offer. We hope to have this posted in our current location fairly soon for members to see what their new gym will look like. We do offer free wifi in our current location and we will have it in the new location. The wifi is anytime fitness and we have the password written on our chalk wall. If you can’t find it pop by the office and we will let you know. As far as how the membership due’s will be effected, anyone who has a current membership will be “grandfathered” in at that rate as we move to the new location. We look forward to the challenge of piecing this club together from the ground up and can’t wait to show off the final product!

  • bsmomma August 20, 2013 (9:37 pm)

I AM SO EXCITED about this!!! Not having classes was the 1 reason for not joining!! And now the bonus of having it literally at the end of my alley?! Sweet! :)

  • Sonoma August 20, 2013 (10:01 pm)

Love your post, smokeycretin9! Also, is it gluten-free?

  • Guy August 20, 2013 (10:10 pm)

  • ttt August 20, 2013 (10:44 pm)

Can we still use your parking lot?

  • dsa August 21, 2013 (12:15 am)

Don’t know where my comment went. It was good. I think this is great news.

  • Neighbor August 21, 2013 (2:15 am)

Hope they will provide ample parking for their customers…

  • LisaB August 21, 2013 (3:20 am)

  • Jamjets August 21, 2013 (7:10 am)

I’ve been a member for a year…. Only complaint I’ve ever had was lack of showers, so this is great news!

  • a August 21, 2013 (7:54 am)

having grown up with the brothers I can tell you they were all raised here in west seattle. Unlike 24 hour fitness or the other workout chains, this will be a locally owned and operated business which is great on so many levels. So glad this land wasn’t given to a developer and that a local family is given the chance to succeed there. Good luck Saldana bros!!!

  • ca August 21, 2013 (8:15 am)

what are current costs? i called no answer…email didnt work :( and please add boxing classes if you add classes at all :) congrats and yay to not another pizza place or huge apt complex.

  • karen in seattle August 21, 2013 (9:04 am)

I hope the few parking spaces for West Seattle Fabrics will still be there.

  • grr August 21, 2013 (9:39 am)

will there be vegetarian options? Will it be child friendly? Will there be a nail salon and framing shop inside?

    :)

  • Rabbit August 21, 2013 (9:57 am)

I think it’s super exciting for the neighborhood! and those who want other businesses in a location..I suggest doing a business plan, going to the bank, getting a huge loan you’ll be paying off for years, getting tons of insurance and paying thousands in business taxes, signing a lease you’ll be paying even if the business fails and opening said business. HUGE HUGE HUGE commitment. I’m grateful to those who invest in our neighborhood.

  • Krystal August 21, 2013 (12:09 pm)

Is Diamond going to continue managing the parking lot? I’m very excited to have a vacancy filled in N. Admiral, this neighborhood is rad and full of life.

  • Shane August 21, 2013 (1:02 pm)

This is great – The owners of this Anytime Fitness grew up in West Seattle. Their roots are in the town, and it’s great to see them bringing a healthy business to the neighborhood.

    Congrats, Guys!!

  • Ray West August 21, 2013 (7:15 pm)

Very disappointed. We need another gym like we need another nail salon or a Mexican restaurant or a bar . . . or a boxy condo. And just wait, we have another gym coming. Jeez. Why is there just more and more of the same old thing being added here. There is a serious lack of interesting retails shops in West Seattle, and I would have liked to have seen a variety of stores go in here

  • namo August 21, 2013 (8:20 pm)

sweat to your hearts content because one day it will become another condo/apt complex!!!!!

  • Last53BusRider August 21, 2013 (8:59 pm)

I don’t understand the gym thing. I have never belonged to a gym in my life. I never rented many videos either

  • Jim August 21, 2013 (10:02 pm)

@Ray West: “another gym”??? How do you figure?

  • Soccer Mom August 22, 2013 (10:14 am)

This is fantastic news! Congratulations Andrew, Daniel and Jacob!

  • Ray West August 25, 2013 (8:49 am)

Jim, my understanding is that LA Fitness is going into the “The Hole” at the former Schuck’s/Hancock Fabrics location.

Sorry, comment time is over.
