West Seattle schools: K-5 STEM mascot, colors, hoped-for name

West Seattle’s newest public school has chosen its mascot, colors, and hoped-for name. The K-5 STEM PTA shares the news that principal Dr. Shannon McKinney made the announcement this morning: Their mascot is the owl; their colors, blue and green; and they will ask the district to approve the name West Seattle STEM Elementary. In the photo from the PTA website report, that’s Dr. McKinney at right with Heidi Baughman, the parent who designed the new logo she and the principal are holding.

That logo is so great – cute, but not cutesy, smart looking and love the numbers and symbols and gears.

I love it I already want a t-shirt with that on it and I don’t even have kids at that school. Great job.

This is fantastic! Great job – talent meets mission. We can’t wait for the T-shirts and sweatshirts to become available.

Let’s get the merchandise out in time for Christmas! I would like a coffee mug, car sticker, sweatshirt, and Christmas tree ornament :)

What a neat logo! I wonder if the district will approve the name though since there is already a west seattle elementary (kind of confusing, isn’t it?)

Love the logo! And, it’s a smart tactic to include the words “West Seattle” in the name of the school, because it helps to commit the program to remaining in West Seattle. Since it’s currently a program in a temporary location that the district could decide to move anywhere in the city, adding WS to the name helps to anchor it. I agree with WS parent, though, that it’s likely that the district won’t want two such similar-sounding names. Plus, the district might not want to make the commitment to keeping it in West Seattle by adding the location to the name. I hope it will stay, but I don’t trust the district.
