Update: Police investigate shooting at South Delridge bus stop

FIRST REPORT, 8:24 PM: Police are investigating a shooting in the 9200 block of Delridge Way. Per the scanner, a man around 30 years old was shot in both legs. They’re looking for at least three people reported to have fled the scene.

8:55 PM UPDATE: Just back from the scene, which cleared fairly quickly once the medic unit left to take the victim to Harborview Medical Center. We talked with James from Greenlight across Delridge, who told us he heard what sounded like six gunshots and went outside and saw the victim in the small triangle mini-park across the street by the bus stop. We also talked to a sergeant who remained at the scene while other officers fanned out – no word of any arrest so far, but police are searching.

9:17 PM UPDATE: SPD Blotter says the victim is 17 years old and was shot after two “unknown male suspects” approached him at the bus stop. (No mention of a female who was reported in initial scanner traffic to have fled the scene.) Here’s their update, which also describes the victim’s wounds as non-life-threatening.

There were 6 shots in rapid succession. Hopefully the victim is okay (other than being shot 3x)

Eek. Isn’t the femur in the legs?

    • WSB November 30, 2012 (9:00 pm)

No arrest reported so far. We’re just back from the scene. Some conflicting information on the wounds but that was the initial discussion between medic unit and trauma doctor at the hospital – the person we talked to who called it in said the man was alert and talking. Re: going outside – hard to say, the possible suspects were reported to have split off in multiple directions – but the rain is pounding right now and that alone is a good reason to stay inside if you can. – TR

I didn’t even hear the shots. Just the sirens. I could see the emergency vehicles.

Have they caught anyone or should I be worried about going outside?

I’m guessing they did not flee my direction because my dogs are silent.

    Scary

  • Melissa November 30, 2012 (9:03 pm)

    Was this drug related?
So far, the dispensaries in White Center don’t have such a great track record.

    • WSB November 30, 2012 (9:43 pm)

Melissa, this wasn’t a patient, according to Greenlight. Don’t know yet if drug-related – certainly that kind of activity has been reported in the bus stop/triangle area across the street. This isn’t White Center, though, it’s several blocks north of Roxbury. We haven’t heard of much trouble with the WC marijuana businesses – they’re not popular with everyone, but aside from the raid at the short-lived and long-gone GAME lounge in the 98th/16th building, I don’t recall any major incidents …

I wouldn’t be worried about going outside at all. Keep in mind, it is not in a criminal’s best interest to seek out people they don’t know when they are on the run, and most shootings the victim knows the suspect. No need to let fear keep you inside if anyone needs/wants to go out–there isn’t any logic behind it.

is the shooting connected to the arrest on the 9400 block of 16th Avenue Southwest? there was it about 6 cop cars an officers with weapons drawn. sorry for the poor writing it is speech to text

    • WSB November 30, 2012 (9:39 pm)

John – might be. I caught a fragment of scanner traffic about a stopped car but missed the location, am planning to check back with police.

@bridge – actually, in anatomical terms, the “leg” refers to the lower portion of the extremity while the upper portion is technically the “thigh.” Just like for chicken or, perhaps more relevant to the season, turkey.

I must have been there right after it happened. Saw blue lights on an emergency SUV and no siren. It zipped down 18th to behind the bus stop and shone its lights on a man in light colored clothing hunched over on the sidewalk. It was remarkably quiet. I went another block up Barton and got out to feed feral cats. Kind of creepy now!

    “Unknown?” Unlikely.

  • F16CrewChief November 30, 2012 (10:08 pm)

This is the same triangle where that young youth was shot several years ago correct? I believe there is a memorial there for that shooting? I remember there was a report back in the late ’90s about how much drug related activity was happening there around the triangle. Anyways, crazy stuff!

Just this morning, I hurriedly called the city’s graffitti hotline (684-7587) to report a new gigantic gang tag on a nearby building (not the dispensary) when I drove by. I knew it was bad news when I saw that particular tag. Maybe not related, but I bet it is. 17 years old is the right age.

    Terrible tragedy.

I like the photos. “It was a dark and rainy night . . . ”

What is that gravestone looking object on the right in the first picture?

    Violence sucks!

  • F16CrewChief November 30, 2012 (10:54 pm)

    Shed22,

That is a memorial for a youth shot and killed there back in the ’90s.

Good eye! I missed that before my earlier post.

  • westseattledood November 30, 2012 (11:30 pm)

    Shed22-

The stone is a memorial honoring Veterans. It was placed by a community group from North Highline way back when but the name of the group escapes me at the moment. I apologize to them for that. A couple of years ago, a flagpole on the Del Triangle parklet in front of Mac’s Pub became the new Veteran’s memorial with a proper US flag flying day and night. But that stone marker by the shooting is probably forgotten by all – except maybe bus riders.

    Westseattledood,

I stand corrected. Thank you…honestly! I always just assumed that tombstone was a memorial for a murder victim from years ago. I’ve never actually walked by there, I’m always driving by it though.

Seriously, thank you for that info.

  • w.s. maverick December 1, 2012 (7:41 am)

hope they catch them. in the meantime I think I will buy a new gun

  • Nick December 1, 2012 (12:36 pm)

yea blame the dispensaries in white center. they are not causing gun violence that’s a fact. gang banger scum bags are which have always been the problem.

  • westseattledood December 1, 2012 (2:28 pm)

Quite an imagination you have then, I suppose, F16. But this is a place and a neighborhood better served, imho, by fact rather than fear-based assumptions.

  • G December 1, 2012 (3:30 pm)

    Glad I’m in LA.

  • LadyBusiness December 1, 2012 (7:13 pm)

I’m very concerned about this. And by “concerned” I mean “quietly freaking out.”

  • Robert December 3, 2012 (8:59 am)

ANY WHERE YOU PUT A DOPE HOUSE YOU WILL DRAW THE RATS AND SCUMBAGS TO THE SURFACE. THEY WILL GET WHAT THEY WANT WITHOUT THOUGHT TO WHO THEY HURT. THE COURT SYSTEM WILL SLAP THEIR HANDS SEVERLY AND TURN THEM LOOSE. MONEY IN THE BANK FOR SCUMBAG LAWYERS.

  • Lea December 3, 2012 (4:19 pm)

The victim is probably being “less than cooperative” about providing a description because he’s scared. I know I would be if I were shot…this is a block from my house. :/ Weird though, I didn’t hear a thing.

Sorry, comment time is over.
