West Seattle Weather Watch: Yes, that’s thunder

Last night’s version of the National Weather Service forecast did NOT include thunderstorms for today – but the 8:15 am update today added a “chance” for this afternoon. Seems to be a bit early, as thunder’s been quite audible for the past 15-plus minutes, and we hear it’s raining on the Eastside. None so far in West Seattle – but let us know what you’re seeing/hearing, because you know what they say about “microclimates”!

Got some good rumbles near Morgan Junction. Love the occasional thunderstorm. Reminds me of growing up in the South; we used to refer to it as “devil beatin’ his wife”. LOL.

Well, from lower Gatewood, it sounds like they’re having artillery practice up in Genesee Hills. ~z

I love you guys — any random question I have, I go to the Blog and there’s an answer. :) I’ve been hearing thunder from the Admiral neighborhood for at least 20 minutes and was wondering what the heck was going on… thought it was a truck at first (I often mistake the garbage trucks for thunder). Thanks for the info!

Here on Alki point, the thunder is audible and rumbling. Seems to be rolling in from downtown. There’s blue sky peeking through to the south of us, over Blake and Vashon, though.

Raining really hard on the eastside. Also lots lots of lightning and thunder. I saw one strike of lightning and then less than a second heard the thunder, in Factoria. maybe the power will go out at work so I can go home early :)

It looks like there is a huge band of thunder showers stretching from Issaquah all the way out to Port Townsend. Nice and peaceful here, didn’t even know that it was happening.

  • stb July 13, 2012 (10:27 am)

It’s raining down here in south Lake Union but I see sun off to the west.

  • Trileigh July 13, 2012 (10:34 am)

Both a sunbreak and background thunder here by our PRESERVED Lincoln Park! (Or is that God applauding our success in saving those wonderful animals and woods?)

  • Kelly July 13, 2012 (10:35 am)

Westwood has been rumbling for a while, but no drops. A friend who stopped by said she drove over in the pouring rain. The sky out my window is that special Seattle “blindingly bright gray” which looks like sun might happen at any moment.

We’re in a basement and can hear the very loud rumbles!!

  • DHL July 13, 2012 (10:52 am)

Thunder? Really? Loud, long bursts for over an hour in Highland Park – thought the Blue Angels were making and early appearance.

  • Brian M. July 13, 2012 (10:53 am)

Rumbling and a few raindrops in North Admiral.

Lots of thunder here at the Alaska/California Junction, no rain yet (fingers crossed)!! I do see a tiny bit of blue sky just above us I surely hope it clears up soon so I can get to the street fair!

  • Patrick July 13, 2012 (10:58 am)

Well mother nature decided to come in a little early, as it stands now we have a small squall line moving into the area as I type this and will move through the area in about the next 10 15 mins putting out mostly cloud to cloud lightning, a lot of thunder as most of you are aware and some brief heavy rainfall. BUT this is just the beginning as I posted on Facebook yesterday. I will come back a bit later with an update after I have had MY coffee and a chance to look at the newest models specifically the immediate Seattle area.

  • blessedmama July 13, 2012 (11:25 am)

well, it’s getting brighter outside! The clouds seem to be breaking up and sun is starting to poke through!

  • Mr. Bird July 13, 2012 (11:35 am)

New cell with lots of CG’s moving into the SW portion of W. Seattle, Please stay indoors for the next 15-30 mins folks, this will continue for most of IF NOT the rest of the day and night with storms becoming possibly severe this afternoon.

We had a quick down pour. Just had a loud thunder clap. It is very muggy. What a summer we are having.

  • Noelle July 13, 2012 (12:20 pm)

That was one heck of a Thunder Storm! Very East Coast style!!!

  • Liz July 13, 2012 (12:35 pm)

Do you think I can go and mow my lawn right now? The sun’s peeking out a bit….

  • Patrick July 13, 2012 (12:41 pm)

@ Liz, YES, no storms firing up as of right now BUT keep your eye to the sky, with the shear and instability above us that can change VERY QUICKLY!!!

  • Amy July 13, 2012 (12:44 pm)

I’m from Illinois, so I love me some thunder. (I love that it doesn’t come with tornados out here!) Too bad I can’t enjoy it today because someone’s left their dog outside (seemingly) all day and it starts yipping incessantly at every rumble. Had to get out the earplugs.

  • Patrick July 13, 2012 (12:49 pm)

@ Amy and anyone else curious, I took a look at the wind shear model and this afternoon looks to be the most dynamic with some storms rapidly exploding ( non meteorological term ) and the strongest vertical shear occurring around that time could and I EMPHASIZE COULD produce some weak to moderate rotation ( and that means possible funnel clouds or even a very short lived tornado ) Not entirely out of the realm of possibility but the chance is there.

  • Liz July 13, 2012 (1:18 pm)

Thanks, Patrick! I will be diligent.

  • steve July 13, 2012 (4:56 pm)

Did i just hear more thunder?

  • Susan July 13, 2012 (7:22 pm)

Me too — it’s sunny as anything but I swear I’m hearing it again! Weird weather.

    • WSB July 13, 2012 (7:29 pm)

Clouds are moving in. I’m checking the forecast shortly – there was talk it wasn’t all done yet. But it’s been a great day at the festival … couple more hours of music so I hope the weather holds for everyone coming out for that! – TR

  • Patrick July 13, 2012 (9:44 pm)

It appears that our time here in the central sound may be short lived as the newest models suggest the greatest threat for T-storms being around midnight through the early morning hours as that is when the greatest CAPE values will be in play and the strongest storms of the day are likely to fire up.

    I will update as needed.

Sorry, comment time is over.
