West Seattle weekend scene: Girl Scout Cookies’ arrival

Today was the day for the annual one-morning ritual at the Alaska Marine Lines loading dock on West Marginal Way SW – minivans and SUVs lining up along the bays where only semi-trucks usually roam. The cargo – this year’s West Seattle quota of Girl Scout Cookies:

That’s Sarah, one of the Scouts who pitched in to get the boxes of cookies to the troop leaders/parents whose pickups were paced across the span of a few morning hours. Some boxes are destined for fulfillment of preorders; others will be stacked at tables outside (mostly) grocery stores when open public sales start next Friday (March 2nd). To find out which troops are selling cookies where, and when, you an use the online Cookie Locator.

Something I have never thought about before, just where are these cookies coming from that they come in via Alaska Marine Lines?

They come from “Little Brownie Bakers” or “ABC Bakers” depending on where you are. Seattle’s come from Little Brownie Bakers.

I believe, but may be corrected, Alaska Marine Lines was donating space for us to unload the huge pallets (twice the height of the one in the picture) and reorganize to distribute the thousands of cases. And we did it all in one morning. Not a single pallet of cookies was left.

Scoutmom, I didn’t get a chance to answer this comment earlier but that’s my understanding as well. This is the third year we have covered the delivery (we actually didn’t get a heads-up this time but I was browsing our archives and realized, hey, it’s the Saturday before cookie sales start, let’s go see if they’re doing the pickup operation, and thanks to area cookie manager Cheryl Brown for letting us take photos even though we showed up out of the blue). Good luck to you all – TR

Oh, the good memories! I was one of three who were in charge of this operation for the WS troops for several years and it was so much fun! Will be looking for cookies!

Thanks TR and Patrick for tracking us down after I dropped the ball and forgot to give you the heads up!
    .
This year our delivery also included the cookies for White Center so thanks to all the West Seattle and White Center Girls Scouts, brothers and sisters, moms and dads and Leaders that helped sort and distribute 3,435 cases (41,220 boxes) of cookies in 3 hrs on Saturday morning!
    .
And thanks to Brett and Alaska Marine Lines who let us use their warehouse for the 7th year!

Thanks, West Seattle Blog, Cheryl, and all the Girl Scouts, parents and volunteers who helped sort out the cookies! And thanks to Alaska Marine for donating the space and forklifts for the HUGE delivery. My troop of teens is based out of White Center, and we appreciate teaming up with the other West Seattle Girl Scouts! Happy Cookie Season!
