High-school basketball: Crosstown matchup, WSHS vs. Sealth boys

Tonight (Wednesday), the girls-varsity basketball teams from West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International HS face off for the final time this season. That’s what their male counterparts did Tuesday night, in a game won by the visiting Seahawks at WSHS, 63-48. The summary, ahead:

From WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand at WSHS:

While Sealth had some trouble getting out of the blocks, they managed two big runs that led to the victory. At the very start of the game, Sealth found themselves down, but a 13-point first-quarter run from senior Pepe Hernandez put the Seahawks ahead, which is where they stayed for the rest of the night. West Seattle came within four points of the lead by the half, but Sealth opened up the second half with a big run that created a 10-point gap for most of the third and part of the fourth quarter, and West Seattle could not close it.

Hernandez finished the night with 21 points; he was followed by Bronte Corbray with 14. West Seattle’s top scorers were junior Diandre Jackson with 25 points, followed by Troy Lingle with 15.

Friday night, Sealth closes out the regular season at Bainbridge, while West Seattle stays home for its Senior Night, hosting Eastside Catholic.

So, now you have to Headline the Boy’s team to hope people read about Girl’s sporting events?!

    Pretty sad, but not surprising

Huh? Much of the time both teams play the same night. This time, they’re not, so the lead line is – if that’s what you’re referring to – “the girls play tonight; last night, the boys …” It’s a look-ahead lead. Sometimes there’s no opportunity for that, but it’s how we started this story. Sorry if it comes across confusing or clunky. Tonight we’ll be covering the girls’ game, and the lead depends on when we publish the story. – TR
