Fauntleroy ferry dock without tollbooths? Potential proposal

Before our next weather-related roundup, we’re going to squeeze in a few non-weather stories. This one is from our friends across Puget Sound at The Kitsap Sun: They are reporting on a study presented earlier this week in Olympia, suggesting dramatic changes to the Washington State Ferries fare system. One of those suggestions would remove tollbooths from the Fauntleroy dock, and instead implement the “Good To Go” electronic pass system that the state is using for the Tacoma Narrows and Highway 520 bridges. Read The Sun’s story here.

OMG, having grown up on an island we have been saying this for over 30 years. It’s the union folks….they won’t let it happen.

Man, whoever the point man for the Good to Go vendors are, they sure have somebody’s ear… and purse strings.

Having been a ticket seller for WSF in the past, I can assure you the tariff is very complex and could easily be simplified. The structure has been morphed for every special interest group who politically sought for advantages from priority load to discounts. Just read the tariff and if you are just a Mr. Joe using the system you will be disturbed by the political influence. This is not a management issue, it is a micro managing issue from the political arena. Now a suggestion to let passengers ride free and subsidize the loss through increased car fares on other routes? Just another lame idea by the people who supported building a special ferry for a specific route that only recoups 20% of its operating costs and has virtually no commute base.

It is another push to get more people to get the good to go pass. This is all part of a larger sceem by the state and cities to start tolling more then main HWYs. Soon it will be all major roads like roxbury or california. You know what I mean. This is no lie.

Sorry, comment time is over.
