Update: New information on 35th/Henderson incident

5:11 PM: Police and medic response affecting traffic near SW Library, More shortly.

5:24 PM UPDATE: Police say this started as a fight between two people. One for some reason started jumping on nearby car roofs. That brought the police. Neither combatant, we are told, needed to be taken to the hospital. Street’s back open.

11:38 PM UPDATE: Commenters suggested circumstances different than what we initially heard from police on the scene. We followed up tonight with Southwest Precinct Lt. Alan Williams, who just shared information from the official report: “At about (4:45 pm), officers responded to a call to 911 reporting a very bloody male acting wildly and jumping on top of cars near 35/Henderson. Officers were able to take the individual, an adult male, into custody. He was treated by Seattle Fire at the scene, then transported to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation. In addition to the damage the suspect caused to the cars, he also apparently damaged the inside of a nearby apartment. The suspect was not a resident of the apartment, but is known to at least one of the apartment residents – who were not at home at the time. There is no indication at this time that the suspect sustained his injuries as the result of being assaulted.”

Does this have something to do with the chopper looping around High Point?

Not sure what this was, but it’s all clear now.

    Anyone taken to jail?

My friend lives here. Saw the guy lying on ground as I was arriving for visit. Walls were covered in bloody handprints. Other tenants didn’t seem too bothered, said this was abnormal for building. Creeped me out.

I just hope they change the rugs and do thorough cleaning. The building needs it anyway. Yuck.

Still seems like part of story is missing. Curious to find out.

    Stay Classy West Seattle. lol

The reports are all erroneous. There should be some fact checking before these stories are posted. I was there and called 911 after a young man came out of our building bloodied and raving. He did not respond sanely and I called 911. The only fact that was true is that he did jump on cars. He was terribly hurt and bloody and seemed to be very unaware of his surroundings and yet scared and upset. He was subdued by police and the SFD crew took him to the hospital. No other person was involved. There was a large crowd of unhelpful people staring and taking pictures and I assume one of them was the source of all the incorrect information. We need to take care of each other, not just gawk at an unfortunate event like it is a side show.

It isn’t true that nobody was taken to the hospital. I was standing right there as the medics were working on the guy and saw them take him away in an ambulance. There was blood all over the pavement and on some parked cars. It was terribly creepy.

We quote what police tell us at the scene, and it is clearly attributed, “police say.” Generally we wouldn’t even go to a medic-response call, but multiple people sent us notes saying lots of police were there, and half of 35th was blocked off; we were way on the other side of West Seattle, but dropped what we were doing and headed over to try to find out what was going on. One person in e-mail said it was a crash; that obviously turned out not to be the case, and we never reported that claim. As for “nobody was going to the hospital,” again, that is what we were told, and that is why it is attributed. Sometimes, yes, more information is available later, and when it is, we update. – TR

As I drove by someone was being loaded into an ambulance. Not sure if they were going to the hospital, but that was my assumption.

Thank you WSB for trying to get info and reporting. Later this evening my friend who lives there asked his manager in building if there were any updates on what happened. The man made it sound like police weren’t giving too much information.

Wish we could find out more- kind of scary even if only one person was involved. There was a lot of blood.

If I don’t get a reply tonight, I will be checking with the police media-response unit in the morning, and I will add whatever they can tell me to this story. They do have to be cautious in the early going while they are still sorting things out … for example, if someone goes to the hospital, an officer will often follow, if that person is a victim or witness with potentially key information, but it’s NOT like in TV shows (“24” comes to mind), where the investigator is leaning over the poor patient who’s being intubated and operated on and so forth and demanding answers to questions … Sometimes when details are few, at least initial reports can provide some reassurance more about what DIDN’T happen (nobody was shot/stabbed, nobody died, etc.) than what did. Thanks for your patience – TR

Thanks, WSB. And Lacimom, as for unhelpful people standing around gawking (I was one of them), when something like this happens within sight of your home, you tend to want to know what’s going on. If we all ran away and locked ourselves in our houses, we’d be criticized for not caring, and I assure you, we do care. There were people there who had legitimate information to share with police.

Is there any more information available about this incident?
