From the WSB Pets page: Dog hit by car, taken to vet

First we heard from Tim, who saw a black Lab get hit by a car on 35th Friday evening, and wanted to make sure that was mentioned on the WSB Pets page in case someone was looking for the dog. We added a mention to the page, but now that we’ve heard from Jon, who took the dog to a clinic, seems like front-page news:

Know someone missing a black Lab?

I was coming home from work (Friday) on 35 ave in West Seattle & just a few blocks south of the Chevron close to Austin st. i saw some people helping a dog that was bleeding from the mouth and she was apparently hit by a car!

So i turned around and went to offer any help i could. it turned out that I was the only person with a car so i offered to take the dog to an emergency facility.

I ended up taking the dog (Angus) is what i named her, I thought she was a he [?] ! Anyway, i took the nice Labrador to the VCA Animal Hospital in Burien [15707 1st Avenue S.] around 7 PM on Friday the 13th of May 2011.

The Dog (Angus) had a purple collar with little metal dog prints around the buckle, and was just a complete sweetheart! If anybody may know who this dog is, please help her find her way back to her owners.

I signed the dog over to King County’s care, and if they were able to save her, and the owners don’t come forward, she then would go up for adoption through the King County Animal Shelter. If you know this dog, please help her find her proper owners! I’m sure they are missing her as much as she wants to be home and misses her owners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also want to be contacted once she finds her family so i may have closure as well! Please contact me at 206 280 0202

Thanks For Reading This & check your local neighbors who may be missing their labrador!

Jon Prince

ADDED SATURDAY 2:20 PM: Lots of new information from commenters – including the dog’s owner.

I just passed this on to the Westcrest dog-park Yahoo Group.

Poor dog. Hope everything turns out ok. Thank you so much for taking this sweet looking dog to the emergency vet- what a hero.
It makes me sick that whoever hit the dog didn’t stop.

  • Tim May 14, 2011 (6:13 am)

I was one of the people on the street caring for the dog. We called the vet, she had a chip in her and they were able to contact the owner. We heard heard that the dog was in stable condition about 10PM last night and that they had “a lot of work to do.” One morale to this story is to make sure your dog has a tag. . . we would have been able to the owner directly. I can’t believe the person(s) who hit her didn’t stop . . . it was very traumatic.

  • wseattle May 14, 2011 (6:33 am)

Thanks to everyone who helped this dog! The helpful caring people that live in West Seattle never cease to amaze me. I am sure the dog’s owner(s) are very appreciative of your help!

  • jim May 14, 2011 (6:54 am)

This is sad news. Shame on the driver who left the animal to suffer. And also the owner who’s neglect put the animal in harms way. Thankfully there are good people who intervened and saved this animal.

  • Mary T May 14, 2011 (7:24 am)

Jim, dogs do escape. Let’s not pile on the owner. Our next-door neighbor’s dog got out because a delivery person didn’t close the gate to their yard completely. So, it happens. Thanks everyone who helped this sweet girl!

  • b-squared May 14, 2011 (7:41 am)

THANKS to all who helped care for this dog – you people rock! you are heroes in my book:)

  • Rick Moerloos May 14, 2011 (8:28 am)

I witnessed the collision and was the first to go after the dog who tried to bolt down the sidewalk. My instinct, of course, was to call 911 to get help, but they were discompassionate and unwilling to help because no humans were involved. I am grateful Jon was willing to take her to the emergency vet. This morning, I sent a message to the Washington State E911 Program Administrator to urge them to update their services to assist with these types of emergencies. I encourage every pet owner to contact them and voice your opinion. http://goo.gl/oJjYq

So nice to see people taking care of the animals of West Seattle. Shame on whoever hit her and didn’t stop….karma.

  • Westie May 14, 2011 (9:13 am)

Glad to hear the doggie is ok. It’s sad that we live with people that don’t even care enough to stop. I took a pet first aid class to deal with situations just like this and more. It was cheap and educational.

Dogs DO get out, but we can still help an animal in need no matter how they ended up there.
    Thank you Jon!

  • sassy May 14, 2011 (9:14 am)

Thank you Jon for taking the time to care for an animal in need. You really are a Prince!

  • NotMe May 14, 2011 (10:01 am)

This story just made my day. I hope Jon lives a long, happy life. He’s a good man.

  • Nulu May 14, 2011 (10:05 am)

The people who stop, show compassion and assist are what makes West Seattle (new & old) the place it is.
    Thanks!

I read Rick Moerloos’ account and as an eye-witness to the collision, I am hoping he can respond to a question of whether he has an opinion on the driver/car’s awareness of the collision?

I also read Tim’s post and he did not seem to be saying that he witnessed the “person’s” intentionally leaving the scene?

With a high frequency of posts condemning the
driver for driving off, I wonder if any one can ascertain this apparent assumption?

Regardless of their responses, a sincere thanks to both Tim and Rick

  • blackwatch May 14, 2011 (10:37 am)

    Jon,

Well done, caring for a hurt animal was a very decent, kind act. Good for you.

  • Rick Moerloos May 14, 2011 (10:38 am)

As a follow up, I contacted Animal Control. They informed me that 911 Services should instruct you to call them. However, I waited on hold for over 20 minutes before I spoke to someone there, and their hours are from 9:10AM to 6:45PM. During off hours, 911 dispatch should send an officer to assist and take the injured animal to a vet. Clearly, this isn’t being communicated. As for the hit-and-run driver, there are no specific laws that address this situation. Given a vehicle tag, Animal Control can track down the driver and pursue the offender legally using laws that do address animal cruelty.

  • doglover May 14, 2011 (11:08 am)

This is my friends daughter’s dog, who got out because a visitor left the door open. The vet refused to care for the dog, unless they got more monies… The owners have the dog bandaged up and just hoping the best for her. Thanks everyone for caring. If anyone knows a vet that will work on a payment plan please post.

  • Chuck and Sally\'s Van Man May 14, 2011 (11:25 am)

Hurrah to all who helped this sweet old girl. I’m so glad the owners and pup have been reconnected. Labs are tough animals; my money is on a strong recovery. Fingers crossed!

And to the thoughtless person who hit and ran–go choke yourself.

  • crystal May 14, 2011 (11:45 am)

@ doglover ~ to my knowledge there are not vets that offer payment plans and yes, vet care, in particular emergency vet care, can get very expensive. Most vets though do take Care Credit which is a medically exclusive credit card. You can suggest applying for that, it can be done pretty easily online. Also, VCA 5 corners in Burien is a wonderful vet clinic, I know from experience that they have a caring and well qualified staff. That said though, they are an emergency clinic and there are other clinics around that may have cheaper prices. If money is an issue, the owner should call around for estimates before ruling the possibility of further care out completely.
I hope everything goes well, the dog and family are in my thoughts.

Jon ~ you are amazing :)

  • cathyw May 14, 2011 (12:03 pm)

South Seattle Veterinary Hospital in White Center is wonderful in these kinds of situations – phone 206.242.8338. They are open 24hrs/day, 7 days a week and available for drop in emergencies. Reasonable rates too….. :)

  • JenF May 14, 2011 (12:08 pm)

What if each of the caring people who read this and commented made a small donation to ensure that this dog got proper care? Doglover, perhaps WSB would be a good place for your friend’s daughter to post which vet clinic people could make a donation, if the dog is in need of further care.

  • Kelsey May 14, 2011 (1:08 pm)

I believe south Seattle vet may do payment plans and are very reasonably priced. It is not the prettiest vet hospital, but seem to do good work.

  • Rick Moerloos May 14, 2011 (1:42 pm)

@Nulu: The dog unfortunately darted out into the traffic. There is nothing the driver could have done to avoid collision, but they should have stopped to help.

@DogLover: If you can contact the owners and find out which vet they will go to and post that information here I’m sure, as JenF says, many people will contribute. I know I would. No doubt West Seattle Blog would help promote the donation drive.

  • Jay May 14, 2011 (2:19 pm)

Thanks to everyone who helped out my baby girl. I was told by a neighbor that she was taken to VCA 5 corners; I went out there last night & had to take her home because I failed the credit check. But I took her home & wrapped the lacerations on her leg, and have been giving her the pain meds that she got from VCA. She is going to a different clinic today to be looked at more thoroughly.

Thank you again to everyone that helped her out last night.

  • Bonnie Dial May 14, 2011 (2:20 pm)

My daughter got Asia from Craigslist on Mothers Day. She was up for adoption as her home burned down. She snuck out of the door and went under the fence which we apparently need to board up everwhere as she is a escape artist. The people at VCA gave her pain medicine shot. We didn’t have the money to pay for her care at VCA so today we are taking her down to Union Gospel Mission, hopefully they can help her. I am so happy and feel so blessed that so many people have offered their help to us. It was so fortunate when we were looking for her that people saw what happened to her and I was able to find her by calling the emergency vet. I am very grateful to Jon and his kind heart.

  • CMeagh May 14, 2011 (2:30 pm)

I am not sure if this is the same black lab that I found wondering around Fauntleroy a few months ago. I kept the dog overnight because the Humane Society was closed and West Seattle VCA were unable to get owner info from the chip (chipped thru Humane Society).
When I brought the dog to the shelter the next day the person working there knew the dog and had explained that this was the 3rd time the dog had been brought in because the dog got out.
I hope it is not the same dog. Either way, I hope the dog recovers and the owners learn a lesson.

  • Jackie May 14, 2011 (2:41 pm)

VCA is a huge rip-off! Especially for emergency care!

Go to South Seattle Veterinary Hospital
    11033 1st Ave S
    206-242-8338

They are by far the most reasonable vet we have ever taken our pets too. Our whole family takes their pets there. They will work with you also.

    Best of luck!

  • Daniel May 14, 2011 (2:52 pm)

Thank you to Jon, Tim & Rick for being there for Asia. And yes, Karma will get the driver that hit her and didn’t stop to render assistance.

  • lenguamor May 14, 2011 (3:13 pm)

“VCA 5 corners in Burien is a wonderful vet clinic, I know from experience that they have a caring and well qualified staff.”
    .
I can attest to this. My friend and I rescued a sick old kitty who was hit a glancing blow by a car and took it there; unfortunately, the little guy was too far gone to save. but the Vet there (Paul, I think) was so kind and caring, we knew we had left him in good hands for his final hour. And he didn’t charge us at all—not a penny.

  • lenguamor May 14, 2011 (3:22 pm)

“What if each of the caring people who read this and commented made a small donation to ensure that this dog got proper care?”
    .
    Great idea!

  • WSLifer May 14, 2011 (5:21 pm)

So glad that my outlook on humanity was restored today after reading ALL of these posts. Some posts set me back a bit; you know who you are! But, all in all, I’m coming around to believing there are caring loving people who actually ACT and do the right thing. Thank you so much! The “others”, remember, accidents happen. That’s part of life. But, the rest of us will try hard to understand. Because to criticize and be keyboard quarterbacks must be so much easier for you than to actually do something.

  • SUZI May 14, 2011 (6:00 pm)

YOUR KIND HEART IS AMAZING GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING HER IN THE KIND WAY THAT YOU DID

  • Bonnie May 15, 2011 (11:49 am)

Asia was seen by the UGM clinic by volenteer vets. She has a dislocated hip.

  • Bonnie Dial May 15, 2011 (7:25 pm)

We need to take Asia to a vet this upcomming week and get her taken care of. At UGM, they do not have an x-ray machine or the facilities. My daughter is only 18 and we will check out the South Seattle Vet, it sounds like that is a good starting point as far as payment plans go.

  • Doug May 15, 2011 (11:19 pm)

I was another witness to the accident on Friday evening and, since this incident has stirred so much interest, would like to add a few things.

First, people are saying that Jon is a hero and I sure agree. What you might not know is just how easily Jon could have driven by and not gotten involved. 35th SW is a very busy road and he could have just averted his gaze. Instead, he stopped and definitely saved Asia’s life. Someone mentioned that there was blood. There was a LOT of blood coming out of Asia’s mouth. It was very gory. Jon was willing to pick up a completely unknown, VERY bloody and very heavy dog and make room in his car, which was full of stuff for the big West Seattle sales on Saturday. What a guy!

@Nulu: the driver definitely knew he/she had hit a dog. It made a terrible, LOUD bang and Asia cried horribly on impact. So loud that four of us were still shaken up two hours later. The driver is just the lowest form of human possible.

Thanks to Rick and Tim and Jon who knew about VCA. Without their help and their cellphones, no one would have known where to get help, since 911 was no help at all (@Rick). One thing I learned is that I never want to stand there in a situation like that again not knowing where to take an injured animal. I’m compiling a list of emergency vets throughout Seattle and plan on leaving a copy in my car. There are about a dozen, and most are 24-hour. If anyone is interested perhaps I could post the entire list if Tracy could help me figure out how!

    • WSB May 15, 2011 (11:29 pm)

Doug – Probably the best thing would be if you sent me the list; I could make a page for it and link that page from the top of the Pets page. If you are looking for some collaboration or confirmation that you’ve found them all, you might post a draft in the WSB Forums https://westseattleblog.com/forum and ask folks if they know of any other – there are some animal advocates who are avid Forum participants and might know some inside-y stuff – TR

  • Tim May 16, 2011 (6:45 am)

That is an awesome idea to put that information here as a link at the top of the pet page. It would be another valuable service for you to provide. . . and it would be the first place people can turn since 911 is not helpful in these situations. Brilliant idea – thank you, Doug and WSB!

  • Lulu May 16, 2011 (8:14 am)

Has anyone organized a way to donate? I’d love to help out this dog!

  • Doug May 16, 2011 (8:40 am)

    Lulu: me too!

  • Jay May 17, 2011 (1:03 pm)

@ lulu & Doug: no, a way to donate has not been organized, but I would be very very grateful if you guys did. I’m kind of in a tough spot at the moment cause I’ve barely gotten any hours at work, and thus very little money. Asia is doing a lot better, but I definitely want to get her hip popped back into place for her. She’s such a sweetie & definitely deserves it.

  • Bonnie Dial May 18, 2011 (6:21 pm)

We can contact South Seattle Vet Clinic and find out if they are open to taking donations for Asia. We are a struggeling family and we very much would appreciate any help that people would have to offer. From what the vet at Union Gospel Mission says, the total cost would be approximately $600. She will need x-rays and quite possibly a surgery to get her hip re-aligned.

    • WSB May 18, 2011 (6:38 pm)

Will someone please let me know? I am writing a followup tomorrow including the information that Doug has gathered about emergency pet-care resources, and would love to have an update on Asia, but I haven’t e-mailed any of the commenters yet and have to run off to a story right now – TR

  • Concerned May 19, 2011 (7:40 am)

I would say find a vet to deal with this and let people know they can make contributions directly there for this dog’s care. I am concerned this is taking so long. . .it is almost a week and she was seriously injured.

  • Lulu May 20, 2011 (2:01 pm)

Please let us know. I really do want to help Asia!

  • furryfaces May 20, 2011 (4:05 pm)

South Seattle Vet will take donations over the phone once Jay sets up an account for Asia. You may want to take her in for a healthy pet exam…which is free if she is a new client. By doing so, she will be setup in their system and they will have her health records/history. Be sure to take everything in with you. Their phone number is 242-8338. Ask for Lisa, the Office Manager and Head Vet Tech.

Furry Faces Foundation assists animals, whose humans are financially restricted, with unexpected Vet Bills, healthy pet food and spay/neuter expenses. The Doney Clinic, who utilizes the Union Gospel Mission, does the same with basic health care like vaccines, toetail trims, etc. (we love them!) Furry Faces would like to start Asia’s donation fund with the following sponsorship challenge to all animal lovers: For every person that donates $20.00, we will match it, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $200.00.

Let’s help Asia and her humans! Thanks for being such a caring community!

  • moji May 21, 2011 (9:56 am)

good on ya’ Doug, Jon, and WSB! I’d love to help Asia, please keep us informed.

  • Bonnie Dial May 26, 2011 (10:43 pm)

I almost gave up hope until I read this tonight :) My daugher, who is the owner called several vets last weekend and didn’t get anywhere. Sounds like I need to get a hold of Lisa at South Seattle Vet. Thank you guys! I need to figure out how to ask the WS Blog for some help. Who do I write to?

Sorry, comment time is over.
