Followup: More explanation of Sunday’s Alki road closures

If you’re still confused about this Sunday’s plan for Alki-area road closures in connection with the West Seattle 5K (online registration till 6 tonight!) and Seattle Summer Streets – a shorter all-day distance than previous years, as we first reported on Monday – SDOT has sent out a letter to residents that has been shared with WSB by the Alki Community Council (which discusses the event again during its monthly meeting tonight). Read on for the excerpt detailing the closure zone (also, added at 2:53 pm, Metro’s alert for the 56 reroute):

From 9 to 11 AM:
Alki Avenue SW will be fully closed from 63rd Avenue SW to the Don Armeni Boat Launch Ramp for the 5K run/walk. All parking will be restricted from 63rd to 56th and along the waterside from 56th to the boat ramp.

For safety purposes the street must be closed entirely to motor traffic for approximately two hours during the West Seattle 5K Run/Walk portion (as has happened in past years). The city requires this for other runs and bicycle rides throughout the Seattle as well. Door hangers were delivered two weeks prior to the event to help residents plan around the closures.

From 9 AM to 5 PM:
Alki Avenue SW will be fully closed from 63rd Avenue SW to 56th Avenue SW for the 5K run/walk and then the Summer Streets Party. Parking will be restricted on both sides of the street during this time.

Please note – There will be no eastbound travel lane open during the 5K or Summer Streets. Access exceptions will be made for emergency vehicles and people with disabilities.

This means after 11 AM local access to condos will be allowed along Alki Ave SW from 56th Avenue SW east. As in the past, SPD will detour those who do not live in the vicinity from Alki on to California Ave SW until 5 PM (we do not detour general traffic onto residential streets). Those who need to access their condos by car, will be allowed by police to drive to their condos from the Harbor Ave / California detour.

We are encouraging the use of transit. To minimize impacts to transit, the Water Taxi Shuttle And Metro bus route 56 will detour at 63rd and Alki during the event. In order to help get attendees down to the area, the first FREE Water Taxi Shuttle Route 775 will leave Seacrest Dock at 8:00 am. Shuttle’s will run every 20 minutes until 5:00 pm, depending on traffic and weather conditions. SDOT will also have additional bike racks for participants to use on Sunday.

If you want to see the letter in its entirety – here it is (PDF). ADDED 2:53 PM: Here’s the Metro advisory we just received about the 56 reroute on Sunday:

Event Reroute – Route 56

On Sunday, May 22, from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Route 56 will be rerouted off of SW Admiral Way, 63rd Av SW, 61st Av SW and Alki Av SW, due to the West Seattle 5 K Run.

During this event, Route 56 heading towards downtown Seattle will travel instead via SW Admiral Way, serving all posted stops along the reroute.

Heading towards Alki, Route 56 will travel instead via 63 Av SW, Beach Dr SW, SW Spokane St, 63 Av SW, SW Admiral Way, to the temporary terminal on SW Admiral Way & 61 Av SW, serving all posted stops along the reroute.

our limited tax dollars at work….
when the city is too poor to fix the roads and put in sidewalks on streets that still need them, why do they still spend money on this ? …
    :(

Sorry, comment time is over.
