High-school basketball: Chief Sealth loses by one point

(The team taking the floor at the start of tonight’s game)
A boys-basketball state-tournament heartbreaker just ended at the Tacoma Dome Bellevue 49, Chief Sealth International High School 48. We tweeted live from Tacoma (see the tweets here); more details here on WSB, and video, when our crew’s back at HQ. (Sealth plays a consolation game, vs. winner of tonight’s Glacier Peak-North Central game, tomorrow at 2 pm.)

ADDED 11:20 PM: Details and video from our Tacoma Dome coverage, after the jump:

From WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand, who covered the game in Tacoma:

The Chief Sealth Seahawks played their fair share of close games over the past few weeks, so it may not have been surprising when their drive to the state championship pulled up short with a 49-48 loss to the Bellevue Wolverines. Sealth dominated the first and third quarters, while Bellevue outscored them in the second and fourth quarters. Most of the fourth quarter saw the teams trading a one-point lead, and it all came down to Sealth having the ball with 1.6 seconds left.

Guard Charlie Smith was key in Sealth’s third quarter run and finished the night with 14 points. Keon Lewis also had 14 points int he game. Center Abdi Mohamed sat out most of the second half as he picked up his fourth foul of the game only 90 second after the second half started.

After the game coach Colin Slingsby said he knew that Bellevue would be more prepared to play his team after they met in the King Holiday Hoopfest at UW in January and that this would be a tough game. In retrospect, he added that this year’s seniors are “a hard bunch to say goodbye to” and he knew that no matter how this weekend ended, he was not looking forward to having to do just that. The team moves on to the consolation bracket with a game against North Central, 2 pm tomorrow at the Tacoma Dome. (Here’s where the full bracket for the Tacoma games stands tonight).
