Birth of a P-Patch: Last chance to have a say on 34th/Barton design

(WSB photo from February 13th)
Tomorrow (Tuesday) night is the second and final community meeting for the design of the new 34th/Barton P-Patch – the public meeting after that will unveil the design that results – so the volunteers who are working on the project are hoping to see you tomorrow night, regardless of whether you were at meeting #1 (which drew a sizable turnout, as we reported two weeks ago). 6:30 pm tomorrow, Southwest Community Center.

I’ll be there. I’m concerned that there won’t be enough off street limousine parking included in the design.

A friend of mine on the Barton P-patch design committee says there’s been a bit of ruckus over whether (and how) to save that birch tree in the back of this photo. She feels that birch tree’s roots will impinge upon the space available for garden plots and so it doesn’t make sense to keep it.
    .
Other people want to keep the tree, perhaps because it has happy memories for them, or perhaps simply because they can’t stand the idea of cutting down any large tree.
    .
My friend on the design committee is suggesting that the builder take out the tree (it’s a non-native species anyway, she claims) and plant another tree in its place, a tree with a tamer root structure.

The tree issue was covered in our story about the first design meeting – see the link in this item.

There is another design meeting scheduled before any decisions is made.
    .
THIS meeting is to focus options down to a few, considering we had
8 from the last meeting and 16 from the Landscape Architecht firm.
    .
This meeting it to narrow those “24” down to 2-4 options,
as well as to consider cost estimates of those options.
    .
You all have a chance to invest your dinner time helping
direct a change that is occurring in your neighborhood.
    .
Your input is worthy, and welcome.
    .
Please take the time to educate yourself and attend…
be a part of the process.

The good thing about open-to-the-public meetings is that you get the maximum amount of public participation. They’re more democratic.
    .
The bad thing about them is that individual attendees can exert an influence on the process out of proportion to their real interest or involvement.
    .
That’s just a general observation about project planning meetings, not specifically directed at this one.

I so hope they keep and honor the tree. I really hope I can make this meeting as I couldn’t go to the last one. For those of us that live on this block, that tree is wonderful. Our 5 year old little girl has grown up with “Mr. Tree” and she was crushed when she realized he might not stay. She had to give him extra hugs and have a talk with him. :-( I honestly can’t imagine having it gone. I think it would just add to the garden and could be it’s crowning glory! I nice spot to sit under and take it in.

Oh, and I hope that maybe this will limit the limos that WON’T go away now. I guess all the tickets and impairment to views while driving doesn’t matter to the owner.

A pea patch is a great idea for this lot! The tree has always been nice to look at but as was said it is old and isn’t a native of Washington … A less invasive tree would be great! Provide shade for overheated gardeners to cool off under!!
