West Seattle Target remodeling, will include full grocery store

Westwood Village will soon have two grocery stores. Target confirms to WSB that they are converting the Westwood store to include a full grocery operation. Regional manager Randy Kraum says construction is scheduled to start in early March and continue for about three months, but the store will NOT close at any point during the work – starting in April, he says, you’ll “see some changes on the sales floor (that) might be a little disruptive,” but the store will stay open. The store has added more food items in recent years, but this will be a full grocery store, including meat and produce.

Why do this when there’s already a supermarket (QFC) steps away in Westwood Village? Kraum says the company is making the conversion with most of its stores – after converting more than 300 last year, they’re converting 400 more nationwide this year, and another 400 or so next year. Since this is being done within the store’s existing footprint – nothing to be added on – we asked if some current merchandise would be discontinued; answer – the men’s-clothing offerings will shrink a bit. The project staging is planned for the back of the store, so the front parking area used by most customers won’t be affected. If it all remains on schedule, a “grand reopening” celebration is planned June 5th. According to notations on the project’s city webpage, this is a $1 million remodel.

    desperation

  • moxilot January 10, 2011 (12:59 pm)

great… EXACTLY what we need. QFC, Safeway, and now groceries at Target. :( Especially since it’s at the expense of textiles, something that actually needs a greater selection.

If it was placed somewhere else, another grocery store wouldn’t be bad. North Delridge, folks. North Delridge.

  • clark5080 January 10, 2011 (1:02 pm)

my guess is that they will close up the isles a lot to get the groceries in

  • Buannan January 10, 2011 (1:05 pm)

They are already sold out of everything the day it goes on sale. Now they add groceries? There won’t be room for any real stock on anything. It’s no wonder I haven’t been to Target in over a year. What a waste.

  • eigenwijs January 10, 2011 (1:05 pm)

This is awesome! I already buy a lot of my groceries at Target because their prices on cereal, soup and dairy products are so much cheaper than Safeway, QFC, et al.

  • RP January 10, 2011 (1:11 pm)

…they’ll be shrinking an already shriveled men’s section. Just great! (Yes, that’s sarcasm.) The men’s clothing section is already pathetic; just get rid of it all together. I’ll take my business elsewhere.

  • SJ2 January 10, 2011 (1:16 pm)

Oh darn… we were hoping they were going out of business and would be putting in a store that doesn’t discriminate.

  • Diane January 10, 2011 (1:18 pm)

sure hope they pay their employees better; barely above min wage to start, no matter experience; pathetic

  • Ex Library patron January 10, 2011 (1:18 pm)

Great – more demand on already tight parking.

Can they open a back door entrance to utilize that side’s parking that often sits empty?

  • cjboffoli January 10, 2011 (1:19 pm)

Uh-oh. I think I feel another flash mob protest coming on…
    .
“…Target ain’t people so how can it be…..they think that they can sell us our sa-la-mi…”

  • critic January 10, 2011 (1:23 pm)

Wow, these complaints are ridiculous…QFC & Safeway in that area are terrible – I for one welcome our Target grocery overlords.

  • KBear January 10, 2011 (1:44 pm)

Why put another grocery store where it’s not needed? Because they’re converting 400 stores this year! Oh yeah, that explains it!

  • bs January 10, 2011 (1:47 pm)

And you think they would do it if they didn’t make money from it? Not a chance!

  • SuitsAreNotBoring January 10, 2011 (2:14 pm)

Bummer – we don’t need another grocery store in Westwood Village. I will probably shop there less, as I don’t want to deal with the grocery shoppers when I am just there for other things. My boyfriend actually does by some of his casual and work clothes – too bad.

  • Skeeter January 10, 2011 (2:28 pm)

Why all the haters? Target is a great store. It is clean, has plenty of parking, good prices, a generous return policy. I’ve always found the employees to be friendly and responsive. Obviously the store decided their customers would be better served by offering groceries.

I don’t understand the complaining here. Is someone forcing you to buy groceries at Target?

  • Sue January 10, 2011 (2:30 pm)

I don’t agree that it’s a good idea, but I’m sure they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t think they could make $ off it. I just hope that the reduction of the mens dept. doesn’t mean doing away with the big & tall dept. (it’s one of the more affordable places to buy larger sizes for men). And my other concern is that while I’m there buying a handful of household items that I will now be online behind everyone with full baskets as they do their week’s grocery shopping.

  • KBear January 10, 2011 (2:35 pm)

“QFC & Safeway in that area are terrible”
    .
Yeah, that rings about as true as the people who say West Seattle is “ghetto”. The only terrible grocery store we have in West Seattle is Whole Foods.
    .
    “Why all the haters?”
    .
Because it seems like grocery store developers have redlined certain areas of West Seattle, yet they keep putting new stores right next to existing ones.

  • Ex Library patron January 10, 2011 (2:44 pm)

    Skeeter

Have you tried parking anything larger than a mini in that parking lot? I have been trapped out of my car before having to wait for someone else to return and move theirs because of how small they made the spaces on the last line painting project.

Now if you take half the cars from the QFC patrons and jam them over to the Target side – exactly where are they all going to park? It’s not like the amount of cars won’t increase. I doubt the management would pursue this project if it did’t attract more customers.

As much as I love the store for the current inventory I’m not coming as often if I can’t get a parking spot. When I shop whether at Target or a local grocery I don’t buy just one bag worth so bus/walk is not an option.

    Parking must be considered.

  • Skeeter January 10, 2011 (2:56 pm)

KBear – I don’t know what “redlined” means.

Ex Library patron – By all means – if you don’t find parking convenient and there is another place that better meets your needs, go for it. Personally, I always enter from the back (Trenton) and park in the lot between Target and the post office. There are loads of open spaces. It is a bit of a walk to Target from there but doesn’t bother me at all.

  • furor scribendi January 10, 2011 (3:15 pm)

Westwood stores gets a lot of Vashon/Southworth traffic – higher volume than locals can generate and thus more shopping opportunities for the local neighborhood. Better to have a busy mall than the wasteland it was in the ’80’s. On the other hand, if I were QFC I’d be checking my lease for a non-compete clause… and wondering if mall management could allow this to happen at all.

  • Margaret January 10, 2011 (3:26 pm)

what is it with people in the USA? We want things, goods, food, cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. All these cheap prices have a real cost, it drives down wages

  • coffee January 10, 2011 (3:28 pm)

Maybe along with the remodel they can find some money to get rid of the fricking blaring walkie talkies and get some headsets so that we shoppers do not have to hear where every fricking employee is at.

  • Alki Resident January 10, 2011 (3:41 pm)

Ex library-I have a full size chevy tahoe and can get into any spot by Target, always have.Im sure having groceries in this store will just save time for us to not have to run another errand somewhere else. Its there if you need it,its not something you’ll have to do.I personally shop at Winco, their prices are amazing and its the same name brands as other stores, only you are responsible for bagging your own food.Big deal it save us a ton of money.I highly doubt having Target put in grocery isles is going to send the QFC customers flocking to Target jamming up the lot with cars.I grew up with target in Minneapolis where it originated. There was a bakery in there and you could step up to the window and watch them decorate cakes.Ive always loved that store and the employees are always nearby to answer a question and very friendly.

  • KBear January 10, 2011 (3:58 pm)

‘I don’t know what “redlined” means.’
Gosh, Skeeter, there must be SOMEPLACE you could find that information. I wonder where…

  • toddinwestwood January 10, 2011 (4:08 pm)

Bring it on. I can save time and money.

  • Dolemite January 10, 2011 (4:57 pm)

The parking stalls used to be smaller, but ever since they widened them I haven’t had a problem.
Hopefully Target’s reasonable prices will force QFC to lower their exorbitant ones.

This area has improved so much recently. The library was updated and expanded a few years back, new 7-11 nearby, Locol opening for business, and now Target expanding their food offerings. I love West Seattle!

  • Skeeter January 10, 2011 (5:07 pm)

KBear, you’re not making sense. I asked why people are hating that Target is selling groceries. You say people are mad because of redlining. But Target moved in many, many years ago. How is Target redlining by simply altering what types of products they sell in an existing location?

  • coffee January 10, 2011 (5:29 pm)

    Alkiresident,
You must be referring to St Louis Park or Bloomington MN Targets! I am from there too. Target used to have a full service florist in their stores too. I just wish that they had a pharmacy in Westwood Target.

  • Carter January 10, 2011 (5:54 pm)

I haven’t stepped foot in Target since it came out their out-of-state-ownership started supporting vehemently bigoted politicians last June in the name of “good business”. Shop away folks as they support whittling away at your rights . . .

  • Julia January 10, 2011 (5:55 pm)

coffee – I completely agree with you about those radios! They’re so loud and distracting that I generally run through the store and get out as fast as I can. I don’t see why they can’t wear headsets – it would sure improve the shopping experience at Target.

  • Cecelia January 10, 2011 (6:03 pm)

I find it hard to believe that only the men’s selection will shrink. It’s practically only underwear and socks now anyway, so what is going to go the underwear or the socks :)

In general I don’t mind Target with groceries although I don’t buy groceries there but the fact that they aren’t adding more square footage there doesn’t really thrill me. I think there will be more product reduction than they are letting on but there isn’t much to be doen other than wait and see.

  • My two cents ... January 10, 2011 (6:17 pm)

Regarding the comments on the parking space sizes; blame the developer and owner of the shopping center, not the individual businesses that lease the various storefronts.

    • WSB January 10, 2011 (6:25 pm)

My 2 – Interesting datapoint. Target owns its site – it is not officially part of WV.

  • brittany January 10, 2011 (6:19 pm)

target has a non-compete clause that mean we can’t get a decent restaurant in there, and yet they will happily compete with qfc? what target has in spades is lawyers, apparently.
    .
also- AMEN to a grocery in north delridge. PLEASE.

  • Keith January 10, 2011 (6:40 pm)

I stopped shopping at Target for the same reasons Carter mentions above. But when I did used to go there, I never *once* made it through that store without encountering at least one child having a complete meltdown. Maybe it was the walkie-talkies. I don’t miss the drama.

  • md January 10, 2011 (6:54 pm)

I don’t go to Target for groceries and won’t be now either. I don’t think the food they have has much nutritional value even if it is cheap. Although I am not at all surprised they are grasping for ways to make money. The writing has been on the wall for 2 years in my view – the inventory there has really been slow to change out and the quality and ‘style’ has gone downhill considerably. I guess its a sign of the times but I am disappointed to hear this news. I think it takes Target down yet another notch (to Walmart status) to me.

  • Steve January 10, 2011 (7:12 pm)

I just wish Ernst was still there.

  • curious January 10, 2011 (8:27 pm)

    when is Wal-Mart coming? :-)

  • No thanks January 10, 2011 (8:38 pm)

I learned my lesson on big box groceries when I was in a hurry and decided to combine errands at a Fred Meyer in one of Our Better Neighborhoods. So in addition to potting soil and sweatsocks, I bought a pork roast and some potatoes. Both were packaged in white plastic.

When i got home, i found that the pork roast was an odd color, and stunk like it was spoiled. The potatoes were shriveled and had all sorts of “eyes” on them. I’d have done better at the Safeway on Othello and MLK.

To their credit, they took them back and refunded my money. But it was telling that they acted like it was no big deal.

  • Alki Resident January 10, 2011 (9:10 pm)

@Coffee-it was Bloomington in the 70’s:)

  • dubbydoo January 10, 2011 (11:08 pm)

Jeez, who really cares… if you don’t like Target, shop elsewhere. This is not new for Targets…lots of Targets put grocery stores in a while back, so this is just trickle down finally reaching Seattle’s little ‘ol WV. I hope they move into the part of Target that sells those hot dogs. Also, they could dispose of their books, as B&N is next door. As for the headsets, it is funny to hear the employees talking on those things as if we can’t hear them… a bit weird, but BFD once again. I usually can’t find what I need at either QFC or Safeway and the Met market has the same products as those stores half the time but twice the price. I grow my own food and goats and eat soy. I think you should too.

  • Ex-Westwood Resident January 11, 2011 (7:12 am)

The food has no nutritional value? For Christ sake it’s the SAME brands you buy at any other grocery store!!! The ONLY item/s that are exclusively Target is the “Market Place” branded items.
The parking spaces WERE small, but last year they increased to the max legal size and now fit any sized car.
So the “owners” contributed to politicians that have a different view than you and your going to boycott them. Good for you! I hope that you check EVERY store you shop at and see just who they contributed to and hold them to the same standard you place on Target. You just might be surprised at just who they contribute to!!!
The grocery prices at Target are sometimes lower than either QFC or Safeway, esp. when they have the cereal at 2 for $5. Name brands like Post and Kellogg, not the off brand stuff.
The reason most of the floor people don’t wear headsets is that they get in the way when you are not only helping guests, but stocking shelves, getting items down from high shelves. Do a little experiment. Put your iPod on with the headphones and work for 5-8 hours restocking shelves, moving stuff from one place to another while trying to LISTEN to someone that is asking you questions about something. Having worked there and used the radios with and without the headsets I found it more irritating to work with them on.
But all that is moot. The simple reply to ALL the complainers here is IF YOU DON’T LIKE TARGET (OR ANY OTHER STORE/BUSINESS – DON’T SHOP THERE!!! It will just leave more parking spaces for those of us that do!!!
Oh, one more thing. If you live a certain life style that is YOUR choice – DON’T force it on me or expect me to agree or support or join you in it. That is MY choice and beside I HATE goat milk, cheese…etc!!!

  • moxilot January 11, 2011 (7:37 am)

Hey EX-Westwood Resident…. Thanks for moving.

  • dubbydoo January 11, 2011 (8:49 am)

You should eat goat cheese even if you hate it — it makes you rich and good looking.

  • Ex-Westwood Resident January 11, 2011 (8:53 am)

LOL dubby…I just might have to force some down then ;-).

moxi…Thanks for being tolerant of others views. One of the reason I’m glad I’m out of the city limits. Not that KC is much better!

  • Alki Girl January 11, 2011 (10:00 am)

Any improvements are only going to make our wonderful WS town that much better. I don’t believe it’s a bad thing to improve Target – those grocery stores are so busy this will help spread out some of the shopping madness. It’s great to be able to get everything I need in WS and not have to head downtown or Burien. And who gives a rats azz about radios!? Ha.

  • flowerpetal January 11, 2011 (12:03 pm)

I still have not shopped at Target since their conservative political views and funding of candidates was brought to light last year. I was in walking distance of that store and liked the prices; but I am not willing to sell my soul to the devil.

  • dubbydoo January 11, 2011 (1:25 pm)

Target, in my multiple cat owning, goat cheese eating, humble opinion, regardless of “their” political views, is no more a “devil” than a deviled egg. There are plenty of people working at Target from diverse ethnic, racial, sexual orientation populations – probably average percentages compared to the normal population. Last I heard, there was no draft requiring anyone to work or shop at Target. Those employees work there on their own free will and I doubt they feel they are selling their soul to the devil — although they may be selling out to mediocrity just being in retail regardless of the vendor. Now I am sure I have slandered lots of retail people, which isn’t fair, since I am also an avid consumer — unfortunately. I sell my soul to the want of “things” I don’t necessarily need. Why I feel compelled to respond to this chain of blah blah blah, I don’t know… actually, I am avoiding more pressing “to do” list items, and it is more appealing right this moment, to ramble about an unimportant topic than go do the dishes.

  • ruggetyann January 12, 2011 (12:30 pm)

I don’t know anything about Target’s political views but I shop there a lot. Looking forward to the addition of more groceries.

  • BMC January 12, 2011 (4:12 pm)

Wow, yeah why all the negativity? Target is a great store for the area. No need to travel to Southcenter or Burien. QFC is overpriced. I doubt I will buy food there but it should be good for those that are interested.

  • Mr KatzMan January 12, 2011 (6:28 pm)

Target is a good store with good products at affordable prices. Have some of you people listened to yourselves? Get a life for the devils sake! Shop On West Seattle!

  • Sandra January 12, 2011 (9:37 pm)

One of my neighbors used to work at this Target and was paid a pittance for aweful work shifts.

I agree with Diane, above: “sure hope they pay their employees better; barely above min wage to start, no matter experience; pathetic.”

It’s basically just another Walmart-type corporation putting more groceries in an area that has plenty of grocery stores. North Delridge needs grocery stores, but redlining has been an ongoing problem there.

If you haven’t seen it, I recomend the film called “Walmart: The High Cost of Low Prices.” Now I try to shop only at local businesses that treat their workers well and pay their workers well. Target is NOT on my list of preferred businesses.

Sorry, comment time is over.
