Vashon Island fire: Smoke plume visible from West Seattle

(Photo added 4:53 pm, taken from Upper Fauntleroy)
It’s not West Seattle, but many people can see it from here, so it’s news here too — we have received calls/notes about a big plume of smoke visible from Vashon Island, if you have a view in that direction.

4:49 PM UPDATE: It’s a fire, according to scanner traffic. One source on Twitter says it’s a three-story house. And crews are still actively fighting it. We don’t have location info so far, aside from one crew telling another “come down as if you were going to the Cove Motel.”

5:08 PM UPDATE: KING 5 has posted this video from viewer Brady Miller (note that it is preceded by a short commercial – placed by their site, not ours):

5:23 PM UPDATE: The scanner mentions “Paige Lane” as the command. That’s on the northwest side of Vashon (here’s a map). We’ll add any additional information we find later; moving back on to more WS news now.

Not sure it was worth having to watch a 15 second Outback commercial (for which the WSB realizes no revenue) to see 16 seconds of shaky, distant video. I suppose it helps KING5 defray the cost of the bandwidth. But I really wish they’d reconsider ads on such short clips.

Actually the first time I have ever seen a spot on this kind of video. But P noticed it after I added it so I added a disclaimer. On the other hand, they don’t get a pageview for letting us (and whomever else) embed the clip, so I don’t consider it a bad deal. – TR

This is (was) a very nice waterfront house on Paige Lane SW on the west side of Vashon. I used to live next door, so my former neighbor informed me. Apparently the house is a total loss, but no one was at home.

Thanks, Meghan. Sorry for the homeowners/residents, but glad nobody was hurt. Our friends at KING tell us they’re getting more video in so I’d imagine they’ll have more info later too.

The woman that lives next door said that she got all of the pets out of the burning home (which is a total loss) and all of her pets and family out of her home, which the firefighters are trying to save now.

I think the commercial is suggesting the homeowners should have gone to Outback rather than grilling at home.

Seriously, I hope no one is hurt.

My parents live directly above the hill from this house–so close that sparks were coming up. Indeed no one was home, and neighbors rescued their dogs. We’ll be thinking of this family this week.

The story from the Vashon Beachcomber.

Thanks, I was disappointed not to see a story when I checked that site yesterday, would have much rather linked to the locals than the regionals.

Sorry, comment time is over.
