Midday notes: Comcast outage; windy forecast; school donations

Three quick notes:

COMCAST OUTAGE IN WEST SEATTLE: Via Twitter, the cable company confirms an outage here – affecting 2,500 homes and businesses, though we don’t have an exact area yet (aside from one affected customer’s e-mail mentioning they’re at 36th/Juneau). Comcast says crews are working on it, and the cause might have been a “fiber cut.” (10:58 am note – They’re now “splicing cable” but no estimated time for restoring service. … 1:58 pm update: Service is coming back, as both Comcast and a commenter indicate. Comcast says the cause “appears to be a bullet hole through a fiber line.”)

WINDY FORECAST: No special alert yet but the National Weather Service is expecting a windy day around here tomorrow, with gusts possibly as high as 45 miles per hour.

HIGHLAND PARK ELEMENTARY DONATIONS SOUGHT: We already have the school’s holiday bazaar this Saturday on the Holidays page, but a new event’s been added to it, and your donations are needed. From the school:

Highland Park Elementary 4th and 5th graders need your help! On January 19th they leave for Camp Seymour for three days and two nights. In order to keep costs affordable for the 125 students they are holding a ‘Rummage Sale’ in conjunction with the Highland Park PTA Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 4, from 10 to 3pm. For this sale to be successful they need donations of gently used household items such as dishes, pots and pans, knick knacks. tools, books, small furniture, toys, etc. You can also make a monetary donation to help defray the costs for some of our students who would not otherwise be able to attend. The cost per student is $60. If you are able to help in either way please contact Ryan Schaedig at 206 252-8240 or rwschaedig@seattleschools.org.

My internet is out at home and we live right by Camp Long on 35th. However, the internet is working at C&P Coffee.

  • Agen Schmitz November 29, 2010 (11:05 am)

we’re affected by the Comcast outage down here in Delridge. thanks for the update.

  • David Brown November 29, 2010 (11:15 am)

My home at 37th and Webster still has comcast internet, so it’s not WS-wide.

  • Nathan November 29, 2010 (11:39 am)

I’m next to Luna Park and mine is down as well.

  • Diane November 29, 2010 (11:47 am)

My cable was out this morning as well. I live on Pidgeon Point.

  • Delridge Denizen November 29, 2010 (12:38 pm)

If it was a fiber cut, someone must have been digging in the middle of the night. Lost all Kabletown services about 12 hours ago.

  • homedk November 29, 2010 (12:40 pm)

Ours is down too (36th & Dawson). Was relieved to see on WSB that it’s a broader problem with Comcast & that they’re working on it…because when we phoned Comcast this morning, there was no indication of a problem on their end.

  • sarahscoot November 29, 2010 (12:53 pm)

Don’t worry, Delridge Denizen – I’m sure Jack Donaghy is taking this very seriously. He even put the microwave engineers on the case.

  • WSB November 29, 2010 (12:55 pm)

SSc, if that comment means you have line-of-sight on the crews, we’d love to know where that is, photo op and all … TR

  • Coach November 29, 2010 (1:04 pm)

Still out at 34th, south of camp long.

  • Ryan November 29, 2010 (1:07 pm)

I live in delridge and my Internet and cable on my tv went down after my in home security alarm went off this morning.

  • DavidG November 29, 2010 (1:08 pm)

Findlay & Fauntleroy still without…I’m home sick too. Good think I can tether with my phone and find out what is going on.

  • sarahscoot November 29, 2010 (1:10 pm)

    Hi WSB,

Sorry, was making a “30 Rock” joke in response to Delridge Denizen’s comment.
On “30 Rock,” Kabletown is a thinly-veiled reference to Comcast. Jack Donaghy is Alec Baldwin’s character; Donaghy is “Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming.”
It all pokes fun at GE/NBC’s vertical integration.

    • WSB November 29, 2010 (1:16 pm)

Oops. Sorry, since “24” got canceled, I’m now down to zero entertainment programs regularly watched. I should’ve googled the name.
      .
Well, in the meantime, if anyone DOES happen to see a crew … we did some driving around but from e-mails and tweets, the outage zone seems quite sprawling considering it’s “only” 2,500 or so …

  • coffee November 29, 2010 (1:28 pm)

out over by the skylark too.

  • LZ November 29, 2010 (1:32 pm)

Still without net access and I live just down the street from the All-Star Fitness Center near the corner of Andover & Delridge. Sending this from the High Point Library on 35th.

  • Avalon resident November 29, 2010 (1:54 pm)

  • pigeonmom November 29, 2010 (2:52 pm)

“i missed you so much my beloved internet. i can’t believe someone shot you! — Ha ha! Love that!

  • k2 November 29, 2010 (2:57 pm)

wow, someone shooting up the fiber optics…
another reason guns should be thrown away, huh.

  • george November 29, 2010 (3:11 pm)

There was a Comcast truck working on overhead cable on 35th at Snoqualmie-ish, ajacent to the the WS Stadium around 1:30pm.
I have to thank Comcast now, I used to think their product was very expensive. In fact, today, they saved me hundreds of dollars. Since I couldn’t shop on Cyber Monday. grrrrrrr.
Our phone, cable and HSI were all out. Now rethinking cable phone, since a blackout wipes out all three. Yes, we use a cell phone for backup, and we are close to eliminating the land line. But whats granny gonna use when she’s sitting the kids? :)

  • chas redmond November 29, 2010 (3:12 pm)

To paraphrase Yosemite Sam – Darned pesky internet, what’s it doing in the ground anyway? Now where’s my wabbit?

  • chas redmond November 29, 2010 (3:14 pm)

btw – Comcast appears to be okay in the Gatewood area – though last night about 1 am I had to reset both the cable modem and the wifi router – something was amiss – maybe the fiber was having a bad-hair(thin) moment.

  • Bob Loblaw November 29, 2010 (3:17 pm)

dear sweet baby jesus, the internet is back! thank you, Kabletown for working so hard to restore it. (pretty weird about the bullet hole, though)

  • Sandy November 29, 2010 (3:19 pm)

Comcast service just came on @ 3:15 on Puget Ridge

  • Bob Loblaw November 29, 2010 (3:19 pm)

@George: Don’t be afraid to cut the land line. we did it months ago and have not looked back once. best part was recently when i realized we went the entire campaign season without a robocall!

    • WSB November 29, 2010 (3:22 pm)

Although beware if you shift a land-line number. We shifted our circa 1991 land-line # to mobile a few years back and still get robo-calls …

  • Delridge Denizen November 29, 2010 (3:56 pm)

Bullets… I guess that’s one explanation for a middle-of-the-night fiber cut. Maybe this is how the Grinch operates in the digital shopping age. It’s a lot easier on Max, I’ll give him that.

  • george November 29, 2010 (4:11 pm)

Oh we have definitely given thought to cutting the land line. But its hard with small children, granny and a teenage sitter (who doesn’t have a cell phone) to rest at ease that if 911 is necessary, how will it be handled. Safe than sorry, and all in good time. Maybe when the cell tower/sattelite creatures also solves dead spots -SMH-

  • T November 29, 2010 (7:05 pm)

If you call Comcast, they will credit you for one day on your bill. It doesn’t sound like much, but I think they should automatically credit you when it’s out of service for so long- so we called.

  • redblack November 29, 2010 (7:52 pm)

i hate comcast, but i didn’t shoot your cables.
    .
    and i have an alibi.
    .
but if i cut anything, it’ll be comcast.
    .
    cheers!

  • Pha-la-la December 1, 2010 (10:43 pm)

Give Comcast the boot. Read. But if you must have your TV: Seattle Public Library has DVD’s of everything to rent or watch your shows on HULU. Comcast is sooooo over.
(BTW: When you call to disconnect, they’ll often offer you several months of FREE service.)

Sorry, comment time is over.
