Crime Watch: Not West Seattle cases, but 2 reasons to take a look

These aren’t West Seattle cases – but there are calls to be on the lookout region-wide, so we’re sharing them here, one with a photo, one with a sketch. First is the recent attack on a jogger in Seward Park, with new information about the attacker, and second is a just-announced case of alleged “cyberstalking” that may have victims all over Western Washington (if not beyond) – read on:

In the Monday night Seward Park attack – detailed here on SPD Blotter – we heard from a West Seattle resident who says the victim is her aunt, and she is hoping the sketch will be distributed widely so the attacker can be found and arrested. Here’s the sketch provided by police:

From a followup on SPD Blotter, SPD also mentions a car that may be associated with the attacker:

Additionally, the suspect is believed to have a visible injury in the form of a fresh human bite mark on one of his arms.

Detectives believe that the suspect may be associated with with a newer model Volkswagen Jetta, shiny blue in color.

Anyone with information regarding this individual or vehicle is asked to call the Seattle Police Sexual Assault Unit at (206) 684-5575. If this person is seen in public, please call 911. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Meantime, King County Sheriff’s Office is looking for more possible victims of this man:

Here’s their news release:

A prolific stalker has been charged with Cyberstalking with Sexual Motivation by the King County Prosecutor’s Office. He is in custody and additional charges in are expected.

But detectives and prosecutors believe there may be other victims—perhaps many— in several other counties. They want these folks to come forward.

In King County, the investigation of William Pritchard, age 23, led to a recommendation to the Prosecutor’s Office of 269 counts of Cyberstalking, Communicating with a Minor for Immoral Purposes, Harassment, and Extortion.

Detectives believe Pritchard cultivated a relationship with a 17 year-old girl on MySpace. Pritchard eventually began demanding nude photos of the girl via e-mail, and made explicit threats to the girl and her family if the photos were not sent.

As part of this harassment the girl received approximately 30 nude photos of Pritchard, along with sexually explicit comments.

Pritchard was able to get the girl’s home town and cell phone number from her MySpace page and left threatening messages on her voice mail and when she answered the phone. These threats went on for several months until the Sheriff’s Office became involved.

Pritchard said he would get his friends to kill her and her family; that he would kill
her and carve his name into her chest; and that if she called the police he would kill her.

The calls totaled 269 from the period of late December in 2009 until the middle of March, 2010.

The suspect has already been charged with Harassment in Pierce County, and that trial is pending.

Pritchard has 2008 felony convictions for Cyberstalking. He also has arrest warrants outstanding for Cyberstalking and Harassment from Seattle and Pierce County, respectively.

➢ Based on a review of cell phone records received pursuant to a search warrant in the case, detectives believe there may other victims living in Pierce, Thurston, Snohomish, and King counties.

If anyone has been getting harassing or obscene phone calls from William Pritchard, they are asked to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at (206) 296-3311 (24 hours) or their local police department.

I’m glad this cyberstalker has been found out. Now…some common sense for young (and old) females out there in cyberland. Don’t put your phone # or address on MySpace, on Facebook, or any other social network on the interwebs. It just enables the crazies of the world out there. Set some privacy settings , and leave them! If you think that it’s a good way to meet people by just giving it out, pay attention to things like this!!!! Just be smart about it!!!

JanS – it’s a lot more effort tyo be vigilant than that – teens have to be sure that none of their friends post identifying information either – it can all be figured out by anyone with half a brain. Commonly a nefarious character would have to read a few posts and add up the pieces – things like school, soccer team, etc could all be part of a puzzle that would tell the stalker where and when to go. Kids have to watch their own posts, as well as all the posts their friends make about them. Tough job. Parents should help by checking frequently.

Though the victim in the Seward Park attack isn’t a West Seattle resident, she has very deep roots here. As a life long friend of the family, I’d just like to say how happy we all are that she is ok and how proud I am personally of the amazing fight she put up for her life. She deserves nothing but love and high fives. In this terrible situation, she did everything right. Please, please, please…if you know anything about the attacker in this case, do what you can to help get him off the streets before he does this again with a potentially worse outcome.
